White tie dress code

Ok. Next year I am on a cruise and apparently they do this 'white tie' thingy. I know they won't strong arm me off the ship if I don't wear white, but... not a colour that suits me really. Suit more ivory.

It will be in May. I may (huh!) lose some weight by then. I cannot wear halter necks or minis because of spare rolls and swollen knees.

Most dresses that are white are aimed at Brides/Maids etc. I doubt I will slim enough to be able to wear a knitted dress either.

At the moment I am 5ft 4 ins and a size 20, just really asking for ideas so I can look nearer the time.

I cannot wear viscose.

I guess I could wear a top and trousers or top and skirt.

White tie means evening tailcoat and white tie (wing collar) for gentlemen

And floor length full-on ballgown (any colour) for ladies

If the gentleman does not have white tie/tails, then a dinner jacket ('black tie') will suffice.

But I do think you need a full length dress. What colours/styles do you like?

How about a white or ivory tuxedo style evening suit?

TokyoSushi · 19/11/2022 19:55

You don't need go wear white, but traditionally it should be full length.

Yes white tie just refers to the level of formality, and mostly affects the mens dress code. For women it just means a formal, floor length dress of any colour.

DramaAlpaca · 19/11/2022 20:06

You can wear any colour you like!

White tie really means full on evening glam, so go full length if you can, the dressier the better.

KirstenBlest · 19/11/2022 20:10

Another one saying it's a dress code, which for women means full length dress.

Mouthfulofquiz · 19/11/2022 20:11

White tie for women is floor length, not white.

KirstenBlest · 20/11/2022 07:24

or not necessarily white.

Deathraystare · 20/11/2022 07:25

Thanks all. I really cannot see me in white Anyway, dirt is attracted to me!.

Just thought for once I would look all dressed up! I have some long dresses but will see nearer the time if I have lost any weight before buying more.

White tie means very formal, a step beyond black tie, not that you need to wear a white dress. Any full length gown will fit the bill.

I'm quite intrigued by a cruise where they do White Tie! That seems incredibly formal to me - I know my DH hasn't got tails!

P & O do a formal Black Tie night and refer to it as their 'Black & White night'. Is that what you mean OP?
