Moving on from skinny jeans...for the non skinny.

Looking for recommendations for jeans in the newer shapes after skinnies.

I'm 5ft6, size 16, apple shape/top heavy. What I liked about skinny jeans was that my legs and bum are some of my slimmer bits, so anything too wide legged will make me look bigger?

Why do you need to move on?
I'm sticking with skinnies as thats what suits me

AriettyHomily · 13/11/2022 21:17

Stick with skinnies if they work for you! I'm on straight legs now, they look better on me.

Suboptimalsitch · 13/11/2022 21:19

I love fatface jeans. I’ve got these and a slight flare one they do. Really flattering, keep their shape and last for ages.

If you like how you look in skinnies, stick with them (I'm doing just that)

Quick google shows that fashion commentators have been proclaiming the demise of the skinny since at least 2014, but they have become a classic style and still look right (the popularity of leggings and running-tights type leisure wear means the demand for the sort of tops that go with them will remain high - lots of people want to step away from fickle fashion, and are sticking with their preferred style)

They're also easily the best shape if you have fab boots

If you really want a change, try straight legs or tapered/peg sort of shapes.

Beware of draughty ankles at this time of year though

Beanbagtrap · 13/11/2022 21:55

I don't understand how people walk around with their ankles out. I'm no Victorian but breezy ankles just looks all wrong and a bit like youve borrowed your child brothers clothes for the day/are auditioning for stomp. I'd stick with skinnies.

primeoflife · 13/11/2022 22:00

I thought I would have to be prised out if my skinnies but I'm starting to hate how I look in them. No idea what I should be wearing now, need to try a few different pairs on I think

Toomuchstufftodo · 14/11/2022 07:03

Go for straight leg, they are still slim on the leg. I'm pear shaped and find them much more flattering than skinny.

TheOGCCL · 14/11/2022 08:08

I’m top heavy with very slim legs and arse. Whilst skinnies do suit that bit of me, and are so practical, I do think I look a bit out of proportion and it emphasises my bust. You don’t have to go really wide (as I think that can make your legs look shorter), but maybe just try something slightly looser, slim or straight or tapered. M&S jeans get a good write up on here.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/11/2022 08:30

Agree with sticking with skinnies if that's what you like and suits you.

Most of the new jeans shapes are very unflattering if you're not slim, especially with the other current fashion horror, the crop top.

Plus I don't know what footwear works with them in winter. The cropped ankle is great in summer with sandals, but not in winter, and skinnies and calf boots just works so well.

Caramac555 · 14/11/2022 19:51

Thank you for all the replies. I might go and have a look at m and s and fatface.

Perhaps if we all stand together in unison in our skinnies they will always be current, although I'm getting a bit bored too.

I think I've been wearing the same style jeans for over a decade, bit concerned I'll turn into one of those women still wearing the same makeup and hairdo when I'm seventy, because it was what worked when I was thirty. Don't want to seem stick in a rut.

Boot it’s used to balance out my thighs when I was a size 12/14 student as long as they were slim around the lower thingy and knee. They were incredibly flattering actually. Wide legs not so much.

MetellaInHortoEst · 14/11/2022 19:55

Bootcuts I mean.

Beefcurtains79 · 15/11/2022 06:57

Skinnies are hideous, they make me shudder. Mumsnet insists they are still the height of fashion but it’s just jarring when I see them now.
I’d go for a nice straight leg, I don’t understand why people say you can’t wear boots or trainers with them? You just wear them exactly like you would with skinnies.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 15/11/2022 08:08

Well no. My winter knee boots fit neatly over my skinny jeans. My straight legs don’t tuck into my boots unless I’m going for the “wading out to pull my rowing boat inshore” look, and the jeans are too narrow below the knee/upper calf to fit comfortably over the boots (plus the legs of my boots are fab, and it’s not the same when all you can see is the plain foot part).

Withnoshoes · 15/11/2022 08:13

I’m pear shaped with calves so skinnies looked crap on me. I’ve stuck to straight leg for years. I’ve got some flared too but rarely wear them as I feel like I’m trying to be 20 again😂

AppleCrumbleRumble · 15/11/2022 08:52

I actually think skinny legs and hips proportionally to the rest of the body benefit from wide jeans because they balance the body. Yes, they hide your slimmer legs but it makes your body shape more balanced as an apple to wear wide legs. Skinny highlights slimmer legs and wider stomach/waist area.

MrsVeryTired · 15/11/2022 10:58

@BenCoopersSupportWren I love your description Grin
I sometimes wear my "girlfriend" jeans to walk the dog as I cant be bothered changing and that is exactly what they look like tucked into my country boots

MrsVeryTired · 15/11/2022 11:00

And to answer OP I wear slim jeans mostly, slim legs also best feature, and they go into my boots perfectly if wearing boots and not wanting to look like a workman/farmer/fisherman Grin

trainer yes.

Boots no, as you would need to wrap fabric round your calf to get it inside and that usually leads to weird bagging round the knees.

Skinnes aren't 'hideous. btw. Just not part of your personal preferred style

Phrenologistsfinger · 15/11/2022 11:56

I have found Everlane jeans work quite well in my hourglass size 16-18 shape with a mum jean effect but still flattering.

Fingerlimes · 15/11/2022 13:10

loving wide legs now! Well balanced silhouette. Straight legs.. have loads they’re ok. Skinnies just for gardening and wellies.

Waterfalls39 · 15/11/2022 13:20

I'm going to the grave in skinny jeans. No other shape suits me at all, and I've got an expensive pair of leather knee length boots I live in during winter so they're the only ones that fit into them!

I do wear lots of tunic type tops though.

QueueEtwo · 15/11/2022 13:22

I think the issue is, as an apple that skinny jeans look best with a longer top.

Some of the other styles really look better with a shorter top which if you have a tummy can be really unflattering!

That's the issue I have anyway! I bought a pair of boyfriend jeans & really liked them but never wore then because I was really conscious of my tummy/ crutch area!

Workawayxx · 15/11/2022 14:01

I have a pair of fat face sway slim leg jeans and find them really flattering. very fitted around the waist/hips but a little bit more modern than skinnies (I also still wear skinnies!).

@Beefcurtains79 can you show me some pictures of how you wear with boots? I just can't make it work
