Engagement ring or eternity ring?! Help me decide!

My beautiful vintage engagement ring (belonged to my grandma) has broken for the second time this year, not as badly as the first time but I’ve come to the conclusion that although I will have it repaired, I need to stop wearing it other than special occasions.

When we got engaged I always had this ring in the back of my mind as the one I wanted and when we went ring shopping nothing else quite measured up. Lovely DH promised that if I needed a replacement in the future he would buy it for me and true to his word we are going ring shopping tomorrow, but I just don’t know what I want. Engagement ring is emerald and diamond but I always liked the idea of a sapphire ring. My biggest worry is that we’ll buy it and every time I look at it I’ll think that it’s just not quite as nice as the original. So I started looking at eternity rings instead, but I don’t know whether they would look odd with my wedding ring and no engagement ring? Wedding ring is yellow gold and slightly shaped to fit engagement ring. Any thoughts/ideas welcome!

Have you got photos as it might make it easier to comment

You could wear your wedding ring on its own on your left hand and the new one on the right?

I have an eternity ring for my engagement ring. I wanted something a bit different. It’s like this but smaller. I did have to find the right height wedding ring to sit nicely against it.

I agree a photo would help
would you consider an independent jeweller to melt down your existing ring to incorporate with the new?

My engagement ring is an eternity ring, I don't notice not having a traditional engagement ring and the two rings sit well together.

I have a wedding ring and an eternity ring. There was no engagement we just decided to get married iykwim. I don't think they look odd, they fit very nicely together.

Sleepyteach · 11/11/2022 22:06

@AhmenGwendolyn noooooo! Nothing is being melted! 😂 I did consider having a copy made but I think to be as delicate as the original would lead to the same problems I’m having now. Will discuss with one of the jewellers I’m going to tomorrow.
@BobStrangeNameforaGirl I didn’t mean that wedding rings and eternity rings together looked odd generally but that my wedding ring might because it’s shaped to fit my engagement ring.

I think you might need a new wedding ring, unless you can buy a ring which is the same shape as the original.
Id be inclined to get a copy made of the original, maybe out of a stronger material like platinum or palladium instead of gold, or even just a slightly thicker band. I know it won't be the same but you live the look, so worth seriously considering. You could have the stones reset into the new ring so that it would still be your original ring as much as possible.
Failing that, go for something completely different so you don't compare. A blingy eternity ring, worn alone, could be both engagement and wedding ring?

We had a trip to the jewellery quarter today and after a lot of wandering and trying on I’ve found a ring! It’s got to be made so I don’t have it yet, but it is perfect. Completely different to my engagement ring but fits perfectly with my wedding ring and I can wear with my engagement ring too if I want to now and again. This is the closest I could find a pic of online, but mine will alternate sapphires and diamonds and it’s yellow gold. Cannot recommend Drip Gold in the jewellery quarter enough, we were about to give up and go home and the lovely lady in there suggested this style to me!
