I know I'm not as much of a regular as I used to be (and would like to be if life didn't get in the way!) but thought I'd start the new thread as I know @EllaPaella often ends up needing to do it so thought she might want a break, and I had a spare 5 mins and would hate to lose you all!

Will tag everyone I can remember below, apologies if I miss anyone!

It’s rainy and chilly over here today. I’m wearing my Joules raincoat over Uniqlo’s cashmere scarf and some of the warmest jumpers I own, to take DD to a doctor.
DD has been sick for 3 weeks now, catching a new virus each week in her nursery. We’ve been taking her to a paediatrician all this time, she’s been drinking her medicine, and DH and I each took some hours off work last week to take her to a otolaryngologist every single day (according to whom, DD’s been getting better and better each day). Still, she suddenly had a fever on Saturday night, we took her to a paediatrician on Sunday morning and it turns out she had developed otitis. The doctor had a go at me, saying he’s shocked I didn’t take last week off to look after DD, no work can be busy enough and he’d feel so bad for poor DD when she would get hospitalized as she’s obviously been and will still be neglected. 🙄Apparently he’s one of those traditional people who believe a woman, once she’s a mother, should turn into a housewife, otherwise she’s guaranteed to fail at motherhood (too bad we as a family can’t afford our main breadwinner to turn into a housewife!). Reminds me of these earlier days when DD was small and I took her for some health checkup, where some midwife felt like she need to lecture me to look and dress like a “mother”, and not like some “career woman”. Ugh.

@toucaninjapan that’s awful! I’m so sorry. Also that DD is unwell, always a big worry.

I know I look the same but I have different shoes ( vans) and an arket tee under. More DIY ( building a hamster house) and a trip to the exotic vet for new hedgehogs check up. They like them to be settled before they see them.

Ordered a load of new fancy baubles yesterday, decided that this year is the year I stop putting up all the garish ones chosen by the kids over the years! I expect I will actually miss them
but still

I’m sorry your DD is unwell @toucaninjapan. I recognize the assumption that childcare is always the mother’s responsibility. My mother is still horrified that not only did I keep working after the DC were born, I didn’t even drop to PT. The fact that I’ve out earned DH for 15 of the last 16 years is completely beyond her comprehension. And any suggestion that DH should give up work/drop his hours was met with incredulity. Plus the schools always phone me - irrespective of which parent was down as emergency contact. I don’t have mobile phone reception at work, and I once got threatened with being referred to social services because they couldn’t reach me EVEN THOUGH DH WAS THE EMERGENCY CONTACT AND THEY HADN’T EVEN ATTEMPTED TO PHONE HIM. That was the catalyst to giving up on the state system and moving them to private school. They’d also ask for ‘Mrs HisName’ when they got through to my secretary. I’ve never used that name, and my correct name was on all their paperwork.

Really cold and grey again today. I’ve already had to add a jumper as it’s so cold in the office.

Blouse: Boden
Dress: Hobbs
Boots: Doc Martens

Sooverthemill · 05/12/2022 10:07

@OublietteBravo yes similar for me. I always earned more than DH even when part time briefly after DD was born. School phoned me once and pulled me out of a meeting with a cabinet minister because it was 'extremely urgent'. She was coughing. DH worked close by and I was hours away in London. He was the contact. So annoying as I then had to call DH to get her . I know it's tricky but they had his number. Our tree was DH, nanny, close friend ( who didn't work and offered) and me!

Hope your DD feels better soon @toucaninjapan and yes I'm with @OublietteBravo I out earned DH and the school always called me (and this is a private school so that hasn't it fixed it!).

Luckily his saving grace was that he was as pissed off as me. We worked at the same company but I was a board director and he was senior too so we both flexed equally - him perhaps even more so. He famously changed his whole depts working hours from 9-5 to 9.30 to 5.30 to fit with our childcare. His (mostly young) team were delighted.

@WoollyHooligan glad you are back to life and with a lovely new shirt to boot. I agree, it looks even better done up.

@KiteflyingKoala you look stunning and I'm also with you in that I've decided I don't care if heel are out - I'm wearing block heels as they are nearly as comfy as flats.

Please excuse the fact that I'm standing on a pile of (were folded, now I've messed theIm up) clothes as I'm having a winter sort out and tidy.

Scarf - no idea
Coat - DKNY
Jeans - white company
Boots - Hobbs

All charity

OublietteBravo · 05/12/2022 12:52

@Shannith - DS boards, so they’re more set up for dealing with slightly ill pupils. They still phone me, but at least they do this on the contract number they’ve been given (rather than my mobile) and refer to me by my actual name. The first question I ask is have they phoned his dad? And if they say no (usual), and it doesn’t appear to be an emergency, then I suggest they try him.

Although I did stop his piano lessons because they phoned me every time he missed one (they were at a different time and different venue each week). How was I supposed to make sure DS went to a piano lesson at the correct time on a Wednesday or Thursday, when I hadn’t actually seen him since Monday morning? Did they really think I had the headspace to deal with that on top of my workload?

Cardigansalltheway · 05/12/2022 14:44

What utterly depressing stories of casual, everyday sexism in schools - totally unacceptable in this day and age and it really does need calling out. It just goes to show that we have a long way to go on the road to equality. I'm frequently on my high horse about the need to encourage men in the workplace to avail themselves of flexible working arrangements. Thoroughly depressing when the assumption in many workplaces is that these policies are seen as a driver for retaining female staff.

Anyway, back to clothes!

Love your boots @KiteflyingKoala. I find heels so much easier to wear when they are in boot form, court shoes just seem to fall off my feet.

Jumper: New Look
Trousers: Uniqlo
Boots: H&M

@OublietteBravo that's madness! The piano lessons that is. The greatest joy of DD moving from prep to senior has been that they are fully expected to manage their own timetables. If she misses her piano lesson, she misses it and I doubt the school would phone me. Though saying that I still check the online system to work out what she's supposed to be doing just in case - though I'm trying to phase that out.

But woe betide anyone who referred to me as Mrs. DH surname. A 3 hour lecture later and they wouldn't do that again.

I hope to god DD doesn't not have to deal with this shit. I'm actually quite optimistic about her generation - thankfully.

Back to non sexist boots - @Cardigansalltheway I love yours - are they current? I've got a friend who is on the hunt for a similar pair and my charity shop hunt on her behalf has failed.

@Shannith they are indeed this season's, link above. One of my best purchases this year, super comfortable and go with everything, highly recommended!

Greyhairwarmheart · 06/12/2022 06:44

Hope your daughter improves soon @toucaninjapan . There
are so many nasty viruses around at the moment. No need for the casual sexism though. You've all reminded me of the days of trailing up to the school when ds had his prolonged adolescent rebellious phase. Lack of organisation is part of his condition and trying to get the school to support that rather than complain to me! Yesterday dress boden, cardigan verve ami. Dress is a mid blue moleskin if you can make it out through the gloom!
