Has anyone seen any good knitted midi skirts? I have a black one from H&M a few years ago and would like another in preferably not black.

You can justify it to yourself all you like @Puddinandpie, there will still be people working 18 hour days for a pittance with one day a month off.

Valkirie · 09/11/2022 20:05

Celtic and Co have a merino one, made in the UK, code ABI15 gives you 15% off www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/kilts/merino-midi-skirt

EasterIssland · 09/11/2022 20:12

That is really nice

Puddinandpie · 09/11/2022 20:22

@JaneJeffer so like nurses and people who work for nhs in this country then!!

TrashPandaTime · 09/11/2022 20:30

@Puddinandpie i don’t disagree that most clothing shops are exploitative. And they hide all the info so it’s hard to make the right decisions!

I don’t love shein (or primark or boohoo or even h and m for that matter) but for some people they are needed, we can’t all afford ethically made clothing - I find it super expensive.

I found the best way to reduce my guilt of all of the exploitation and polyester that goes into landfill from the fashion industry is just to not buy too much. I’ll buy a couple of tops I need from h and m, never do big “hauls” anymore like I did as a teen. It makes me feel guilty! Im also super picky and I have to love love love something to keep it.

Puddinandpie · 09/11/2022 20:40

@TrashPandaTime that's the thing I do lots of hauls at once because I love clothes and I buy from allover, I just like what I like ......but I do big hauls roughly every 5 years because I look after all of my clothes and then don't buy anything for another 5 years and all of it gets passed down to my daughter and other family members whoever wants them as I keep my clothes in really good condition, I don't feel guilty about working bloody hard to earn my money and spend it on whatever I or my family want!

SoundMachine · 09/11/2022 20:56

OMG I didn't mean to start a debate on ethical shopping when I started this thread 😱

Thanks for everyone's recommendations. I like ones from Boden, celtic co and uniqlo (NOT the stripy one). Wtf is that Marni range all about, it looks someone's Nan had a go at knitting some 90s clubbing gear 😱

@JaneJeffer could you provide some constructive, ethical recommendations then please?

simply criticising others isn’t particularly helpful

Swampthing55 · 09/11/2022 21:25

woolovers can have some good stuff. Made in UK probably exploiting people but seems like it's rife

Lily073 · 09/11/2022 21:27

Puddinandpie · 09/11/2022 17:36

@Lily073 sorry but I will shop wherever I want to thank you very much! No different to anywhere else you shop, google it! even the very high end shops exploit their workers that's just how it is!!

That's simply not true and is no excuse to turn a blind eye to such practices. Purchasing cheap tat forces people working for Shein to work until 2am in attempts to hit unachievable targets where they are paid just pence for each garment they produce. People are crammed in filthy dormitories that lack hot water and functioning toilets and have just one day off per month. I don't want that on my conscience and would seriously judge anyone able to afford better who claims they are comfortable with supporting this.

Lily073 · 09/11/2022 21:31

Puddinandpie · 09/11/2022 19:55

@JaneJeffer you do realise that shein actually manufacture clothes for other companies/shops too for example they manufacture for next, boohoo, forever 21, h&m, also high end places like Karen millen, anthropologie, simple retro, cider, loads of other also, I've actually had items items turn up that I've bought from shein with those labels in, they are just many manufacturers outsourced and selling items from many other retailers! I've just love how clever people are and jump on the bandwagon of others rather than doing the research and making their own minds up, you do realise all these channel 4 shows are hyped up to get the views and boy does it work!!

Of course we realise and we don't purchase from them either.

hippydyegirl · 09/11/2022 21:37

Why is everyone recommending long knitted skirts? Like what an old lady would wear all of these. Where are all the mini skirts knitted?

JaneJeffer · 09/11/2022 22:01

Here you go @FurAndFeathers www.grown.ie/womens

I'm sure a quick google will find you some UK companies too.

simply criticising others isn’t particularly helpful maybe they'll learn something if they care to

I think it's because I asked for midi skirt recommendations. No point mentioning mini skirts cos it's not what I asked for!

Puddinandpie · 09/11/2022 22:23

@Lily073 so are you telling me where to shop???

Verite1 · 09/11/2022 23:33

@Puddinandpie - I don’t think anyone is telling you where to shop. Just judging you for apparently being able to afford less exploitatively made clothes, but very loudly choosing not to. Your prerogative obviously.

Puddinandpie · 10/11/2022 00:39

@Verite1 but I haven't been loud! I went on this thread to offer someone some help that's all and then I got ambushed into being told what I can and can't buy, where I can and can't shop, if you read the thread you would see! And who on earth are any of you to judge what I do or buy or where I spend my money you are all nobodies in my life its a simple as that🤷‍♀️

Puddinandpie · 10/11/2022 00:45

The days of telling women what to do, what to wear and what to spend are bloody over, if you all don't like it, then thats tough shit!

Abra1t · 10/11/2022 13:11

EasterIssland · 09/11/2022 20:12

That is really nice

I actually went back and bought it myself in dark green for a non-black clothes funeral! I hope it is nice in the flesh.

Amrapaali · 10/11/2022 15:34

I've had some very nice knitted skirts from Sainsburys of all places. They were pencil skirts (but very generous and not body con type olde-worlde secretarial skirts). Knee-length but was proper midi on my 5'4" short-arse.

I have one in burgundy and one that is faux wrap-around in a very plush grey.

Disclaimer: I bought these skirts a couple of years ago so this is not current info. But Sainsbo's usually bring out some sober, practial knitted stuff after the Xmas glittery madness. So if you trawl though the aisles in late January, you can usually grab something very suitable.

Amrapaali · 10/11/2022 15:40

Oh they actually have something in stock now! Mind you the pattern is really nasty 😅

I think that skirt is now neck and neck with the uniqlo Marni one for the worst skirt of the thread!

did you find any at the end?

I went for the Boden one, although I've had to return for a smaller size as it was slighty baggy (probably due to the stretchy material and my shorter stature than my girth!). The smaller size is much better, I really like it 👍🏻 Thanks to the person who recommended it @Abra1t

That's a pleasure! I'm keeping my Boden wool skirt, too, the green one.
