Classic/preppy capsule wardrobe

KittenCatt · 05/11/2022 21:46

Hello, I have spent the last two years curating a capsule wardrobe. I love the preppy/classic style, so that’s what my aim was to do. As you’ll be able to tell from my list, I prefer neutral colours.

Is there anything that you think I’ve missed out, or if there are any gaps please? I need a fresh pair of eyes of look at my list. For context, I’m in my mid 20s and live in a city.

Beige trench coat
Navy Barbour wax jacket
Denim jacket
x2 white cotton shirts (one for everyday/workwear and one for formal occasions)
Blue and white cotton shirt
Black cotton shirt
Linen white shirt
Black and white cotton stripped t-shirt
Black t-shirt
White t-shirt
x2 Nike hoodies (one black and one cream)
Beige Nike jogging bottoms
Navy sweatshirt
Navy RL American flag jumper
Black jumper
Black suit jacket
Black suit trousers
Beige corduroy trousers
Blue jeans x2
Black jeans
Black and white houndstooth trousers
Beige ankle grazer trousers
Black ankle grater trousers
White and blue Summer dress
Beige shorts
White skirt
x2 formal dresses
Pair of black Chelsea boots
Pair of black combat boots
Pair of white trainers

Pair of burgundy sandals

@KittenCatt I think ultimately only you can tell if you have gaps. To me, gaps in my wardrobe would be (a) having to do half a wash load because I didn't have enough clothes to do a full wash but I have run out of clothes, (b) looking in the wardrobe having no idea what to wear because I've got an activity I have nothing suitable for, and (c) having nothing for that 'on-a-nice-occasion-something-out-of-the-ordinary' item. HTH!

Loafers?

Niftythrifter · 06/11/2022 20:01

Little boucle jacket?
LBD?

NewYorkLassie · 06/11/2022 20:02

What about smarter knitwear?

Brown or tan boots?

MiniTheMinx · 06/11/2022 20:05

Good quality wool coat, preferably long, classic style in Navy

KittenCatt · 06/11/2022 20:35

Yes, loafers! Thank you! I was looking for a smart pair of shoes, but forgot the name of these ones 😅

i was going to say brogues or loafers. The Orianna Derbys in olive from Clarks are on my list

fedstool · 06/11/2022 21:34

Surely loafers are super preppy.

Do you have enough t-shirts?

what about knitwear & a heavier coat plus scarf & hat.

Mustbemagic · 06/11/2022 21:49

This seems fine for autumn/spring but surely a wax jacket or trench won't get you through the depths of winter!
What do you wear through summer or on holidays - just one dress, one skirt, one pair of shorts and a couple of T-shirt's?

Mustbemagic · 06/11/2022 21:49

T-shirts*

KittenCatt · 06/11/2022 21:59

The waxed jacket and trench coat do get me through the Winter because I can (and do) wear jumpers underneath them when it’s cold.

My two pairs of ankle grazers are a thin material, so I wear those through the Summer too. Plus my linen shirt. You’re right though, I should add some pieces for Summer.

@MiniTheMinx I’ll look into getting a wool coat, thank you! Any brand recommendations?

@fedstool I’ve added loafers to my list - thank you.

I hate wearing hats, and I have two scarves (just wasn’t sure if accessories count in the list!)

You don't have many t-shirts. What about navy and perhaps a khaki/beige-y type colour? There are lots of trousers but not many lighter/cooler tops.

LoobyDop · 07/11/2022 14:19

A blazer. The one I wear most is navy, but black seems to be your main neutral, so maybe black. Or grey, which would still work with black, but not risk being close-but-noth-the-same with your black trousers.

And a wool coat. I find a 3/4 length, tailored wool coat is actually incredibly versatile- looks just as good with jeans and trainers or boots as with more formal stuff, especially if you wear it open with a big scarf.

3WildOnes · 07/11/2022 14:26

Knitwear. Another summer dress. A couple of silk blouses that go with your trousers, skirts and shorts.

BlueKaftan · 07/11/2022 14:30

Follow Stacy Flinner on Instagram. Her style is amazing.

cakeandteajustforme · 07/11/2022 16:08

Nice black top to go with jeans for casual but smart dinners? Bit of silk/lace/velvet for winter?

Karen Millen, or vintage Max Mara maybe. I have a couple of coats from Jigsaw which are lovely soft and warm. I tend to buy in dress agencies......can't afford not to ;)

Update:

Since making this post, I have added the following to my capsule wardrobe.

I got a North Face puffer jacket for the colder months
Black leather loafers
Veja trainers (my “smart” trainers)
Nike Air Max 270
Nike Pro leggings
Short Hunter wellies
RL tweed blazer
Crew Clothing half zip striped jumper
Navy gilet
Blue and white striped shirt

I’m hoping to add a couple more t-shirts for layering too.
