Where did you shop...but don't now?

Could be due to rising prices or crap choices these days. I'll go first -

Boden (increased price)
Baukjen increased prices)
H&M (too fast fashion)

OP posts:

Jane Norman
Republic
Debenhams

Justbetweenus · 05/11/2022 17:01

Hobbs - too 1990s corporate. Me&Em have a far better eye for corporate dressing (although agree it’s too expensive). Hobbs lost their way pre-covid though and really haven’t kept up to date. Shame because their shop staff were awesome at recommending things I’d never have looked at.

IrishMamaMia · 05/11/2022 17:15

A lot of my things are second-hand but used to pick up lots in Primark a few years ago. Now mainly get my new bits in M&S, H&M and surprisingly New Look which I didn't really shop in much when I was in my twenties. I have noticed the decline in quality and increase in prices in the places mentioned up thread.

TitInATrance · 05/11/2022 17:26

Debenhams, BHS, Littlewoods, co-op - I evidently don’t spend enough to keep anyone in business.

White Stuff new sizing doesn’t fit me, I can get away with things that aren’t fitted in the waist but skirts gape.

House of Fraser, poor service and returns policy.

Currently relying on Seasalt, Fat face and M&S … but if there was a better quality alternative to M&S locally I’d use it.

GettingStuffed · 05/11/2022 17:35

For a pp Peacocks is still going. They have some nice stuff in atm

Niftythrifter · 05/11/2022 17:36

i buy most of my clothes from charity shops now so probably the high street in general.

mistopheles · 05/11/2022 17:42

Zara. Worst customer service I've ever experienced.

Googlecanthelpme · 05/11/2022 17:54

River island was always my go to for jeans, basics a nice ‘going out’ outfit between about 2006-2017.

I still have an occasional look in there and whilst they do sometimes have some nice knitwear and coats / jackets, I find everything else far too young.

Not a criticism of the shop necessarily- I’m just heading rapidly to middle age!

Warehouse was another of my big ones. I know they are still knocking around but I wouldn’t even bother looking these days.

I actually buy more from topshop now they’re on ASOS than I ever did in store

Purplecatshopaholic · 05/11/2022 17:58

Back in the day I used to go to Next quite a bit, but like so many places the prices have gone up and the quality has gone down. Not been near them in years now.

flflflf · 05/11/2022 17:59

I used to shop in shops!

But rarely do any more. Re-use old clothes, even charity shops seem expensive.

Upwiththelark76 · 05/11/2022 18:03

Next - boring and Mumsy

mac1974 · 05/11/2022 19:24

Next is just boring. It's the same tops rotated into different colours and prints. Absolutely dreadful.
Agree with PP about river island & House of Gucci.
I miss Oasis. Used to get some really nice stuff in their shops. Shame it's been ruined.

I like new look, John Lewis & H&M and local boutiques.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/11/2022 20:34

Next is dull with weird colours and creepy fabrics, but to say it is 'mumsy' is just silly. I do think it's good for denim jackets and the occasional pair of work trousers though.

Arnaquer · 05/11/2022 20:36

Boden - too expensive
Oasis - does it still exist?
Principles- used to love, so frumpy now

SimonaRazowska · 05/11/2022 21:23

Phase Eight: I feel too young for it at 50 Confused it's very middle-aged-wedding-guest

White Company: boring and baggy

Toast: too expensive now, and gone too far Soviet-Librarian direction

Ted Baker too London

Jigsaw: I don't know who the clothes are for anymore, it's too formal for me and too expensive

Hobbs: it used to be classic, now positively older-lady-who lunches or does the church flowers

Me and Em: looks great on my friends, but I look like the vicar's wife

Joules/Seasalt/White Stuff too much jolly teacher assistant vibe , florals and colourful stripes

Fat Face: mums with young kids vibe.

What I still buy: Hush, Free People and HM

But I really used to love White Company for their feminine styles in natural fibres. And I still love some Toast Stuff but £££

Whitney168 · 05/11/2022 21:29

Hush - variations on the same old things every year and diving quality. (Particularly can’t forgive the quality drop on their harems, would rather have kept the quality and had the price rise.)

jalopy · 05/11/2022 21:40

I used to love H & M when it offered a wide range of styles & designs.
Now that the stock has been pared right back, it has become a very dull shopping experience.

I'd be a very jolly teaching assistant if I could afford to shop at Joules, Seasalt and White Stuff!

LaMereDuChat · 05/11/2022 21:46

Gone:

Boden and Baukjen: not sure what happened internally, but they became very mumsy about 3 years ago. Now design clothes my 75 year old mother might wear

Hush: terrible quality; you'd be better off buying from H&M or La Redoute at a fraction of the price

Teetering on ditching:

Sezane: the old rising prices / descending quality duo are starting to raise their heads.

Can't Do:

Me&Em: I'm even a shareholder (bought when they crowdfunded as it looked a good business and quality / cut was great) but the clothes don't suit me at all and I'm always between sizes.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 05/11/2022 21:54

I used to love white stuff but then it got frumpy

Walkingtheplank · 05/11/2022 21:55

Boden.
I dont know who their target market is now. You'd have to be young and skinny to get away with the current styles but not sure very young women have that cash.

A shame. They have great customer service.

Woolies
C&A
BHS
Littleworth
Seldom use M&S these days

Mostly I've changed shops because of my age. Things just don't seem right on me now though I suspect OH wouldn't object too much. Apart from that is just changes in life no need for Mothercare (is it still going) children's shops.

WGACA · 05/11/2022 22:07

Oasis used to be my favourite shop and I got all my clothes from there.

FlySwimmer · 05/11/2022 22:12

RiftGibbon · 05/11/2022 16:00

BHS for lighting, bedding and footwear.
Woolworths for homewares, small DIY items and stationery.
Our Price for vinyl on import.
Debenhams for occasion wear.
The Pier for unusual bowls, picture frames, gifts.
All gone.

Oasis for workwear. It got rubbish.
River Island for everyday clothing . Got too expensive.

Oh my god @RiftGibbon I used to work in The Pier, that’s bringing back memories! Mainly the stench of all those candles…
