Boden! Yes, I know…

So - I used to buy a few bits for my dd when she was younger - but have never actually bought anything for myself from Boden.

But as a late 40s woman I am having a bit of a clothing crisis and drawn to a few things in their latest catalogue. In particular, their short tuille skirt and the velvet tops and jacket. Has anyone bought anything recently?

For context, I am short and very slim - so increasingly finding it difficult to find clothes that I want to wear and that don’t drown me.

I needed black clothes when my dad died earlier this year. Boden were a godsend with their dresses. They were so easy to wear & looked really good on.

So much so that next summer I’m going to keep a look out for their summer dresses.

If you're petite/slim, beware the enormous sizing. It's definitely designed for larger frames.

Yes, I’ve found this out the hard way. I’m not very slim but ordered a pair of straight legged jeans last jean in a size 10 petite - they were enormous! It was like wearing clown trousers. I measured them to see how they compared to Boden’s own sizing and they were a size 16. I’ve had similar issues with petite sizing, it seems to be a bit of a hit or miss - I know that’s the case with other shops but you’d think for the price that they’d be more accurate.

I like the tulle skirts but their prices have gone bananas over the last couple of years

DeborahVance · 05/11/2022 07:54

I love that mutton sleeved top OP. I think Boden has quite nice things atm

I am short and very overweight with an apple shape so Boden looks awful on me. I do really like it though- I love velvets and tulles and sequins at the best of times. If i had the figure I would definitely buy quite alot of it I think- particularly their seasonal party dresses.

Love their kids stuff though.

@Notcontent oooh I love that velvet top you've linked. I might buy it but no clue what to wear it with!
I have a few things from Boden and the quality is amazing. Agree the prices have rocketed but it's the same for most retailers isn't it?
If you fancy a tuille skirts this may be a cheaper option from Hush. I have this though haven't found many opportunities to wear it 😆 www.hush-uk.com/floriza-ruffled-skirt-mauve/001463-0205.html

I find the childrens clothing small and the adults is a big hit and miss the kitty dresses never look right on me however I do love my paintbox mac from there. A lot of it is overpriced overpriced wait for the sales

OP if you are petite and don’t want to dress like a teen, your options on the high street are increasingly limited - many regular lengths have got a bit longer and those doing petite tend to be the cheaper end. Boden is good for doing a proper petite range (as in, you get a choice of more than 2 pairs of trousers and they don’t just shorten the hem but change the distance from shoulder to nipple etc!)

I haven’t got anything from Boden this season, I did get a summer dress this year that’s washed well and looks good, I tend to buy one or two things from them a year, usually when I need petite jeans/trousers and can’t be arsed getting things altered or taking the risk of static electric shocks to the fango.

I had my eye on one of their winter cord dresses, but sold out in petite in my size.

LimeCheesecake · 05/11/2022 09:03

oh now I’ve looked again because of this thread - I had my eye on the cord dress in pink, but not they’ve got it in red and green, both have the look of dresses that would work well for pre-Christmas lunches.

Notcontent · 05/11/2022 10:43

@pharmachameleon yes, I saw the hush skirts - thanks for the tip! My only problem is that because I am only 5’2 and skinny, hush are much too big for me.

@LimeCheesecake this is so true. I used to buy the occasional item on sale from some French brands as they tended to be good for petites - e.g. Sandro - but they have got more expensive and also I feel like they are now designing for tall 18 year olds….

I have some really good basics from Boden which have lasted and fit me perfectly. Not looked for ages because like most other shops it became all odd-shaped and high collared. But got a lovely maxi dress in the summer.

LimeCheesecake · 05/11/2022 11:31

Yep - Boden are increasingly becoming a go to for petite woman as everything gets a bit longer, and it’s not helped that the fashion for everything being a bit voluminous just drowns short people in a mountain of fabric.

that gorgeous Hush skirt is a case in point, you’d need to alter it if you’re 5’2”, and it might be far too much for you.

I’m currently coveting these faux leather trousers. I think they look much nicer than ones elsewhere.

I have bought these in Navy and black. They look and feel great. Really good quality.

I also have this Cashmere Tank in both Green and Dark Grey. They are lovely, really good quality and versatile.
