Hunter wellies fit

I tried on a standard hunter welly boot the other day. They were sooooo tight around the calf. I got the boots on but they just felt so tight. Is this how they should fit?

I didn't buy them and everyone enjoyed viewing my dh wrench them off of me in the shop as they really were quite tight but I have been left believing either my calves are larger than standard or the wellies are smaller than the average calf. I would not say my calves were obviously big though!

Hunters are fairly slim fitting boots, I'd never get a pair over my calves 😂!

OrlandointheWilderness · 02/11/2022 09:58

And tbh as wellies go they are no longer the gold standard. They don't last. I use le chameaus.

I have a wide calf and buy the wide fitting ones…. They aren’t the widest tho either. At least when pulling them off they didn’t create a vacuum tho! I now buy their short ankle ones which I love.

serenghetti2011 · 02/11/2022 10:09

I had shorter ones that fit ok but they did rub at the back a bit but they are just so un comfy to walk any distance in, I’ve got muck boots now so comfy and can walk miles in them

luciaann · 02/11/2022 10:10

Mike are quite loose over my calfs

parietal · 02/11/2022 10:11

I had to go a size up in Hunters and they were still tight.

they also developed holes after 6 months light use which I was NOT impressed with. won't get them again.

Omgwhatthehell · 02/11/2022 10:12

I have chunky calves and have got stuck in a pair! They definitely are quite slim fitting. I had to give them to my mum.

greenbirdsong · 02/11/2022 10:12

I also have wide calf's and struggle with boots.
I have the adjustable hunter wellies and they fit perfectly. You can adjust them for the size of your legs.

I have adjustable ones. I wouldn't recommend them for longevity though. The inside lining which I paid extra for as it was maybe goetex or something is coming unstuck and the adjustable part on the side has unstuck too!

Disscombobulated · 02/11/2022 10:21

Unless buying for fashion, I really wouldn't bother as the quality has really deteriorated. My first pair lasted 10 years (daily walking, riding, mucking out etc), my current pair are letting in water after just a couple of years!

DomesticShortHair · 02/11/2022 10:36

If you’re after ‘fashion’ wellies, Fairfax & Favor have just started a line in conjunction with Le Chameau.

They're not my cup of tea, I’ll stick to the original Le Chameau ones, but they do seem to be popular.

turqouiseorchid · 02/11/2022 11:04

Oh no I'm most definitely not buying them for fashion. My pair that have lasted me over a decade have just split. I regularly walk in wellies at least weekly so need a solid pair. I always thought these ones lasted.
I tried on the adjustable hunter ones but alas, they did go over my calves but the boots looked ridiculous as they were tight against my jeans around the top rim but rather baggy underneath the top bit if that makes any sense.
What brands should I look for for longevity? And potentially fit my calves

Le chameau are my pick, survived working as a feeelance groom for years. Aigle are very good, and muck boot ones also have a good rep.

turqouiseorchid · 02/11/2022 11:33

Thanks @OrlandointheWilderness I will take a look. I'd like to keep my welly expenditure to once every a decade 😄

Yes so do I!! 😂

gogohmm · 02/11/2022 13:19

Go to a farm supply shop - mine are from one and still going strong 12 years later. Farmers know their wellies!

AriettyHomily · 02/11/2022 14:22

I got the mens ones but they were shit and fell apart after one winter.

MandyMotherOfBrian · 02/11/2022 14:39

And this is why I’ve just sold my Hunters on eBay to someone with, presumably, less rustic calves than mine 😁.
Second Le Chameau and Aigle for ‘proper’ boots, suspect Hunters aren’t as good as they used to be anyway tbh.

SealSquish · 02/11/2022 14:44

My mum spends about 3 hrs a day in her wellies dog walking through muddy fields and swears by muck boots. They normally last her a good few years and she likes the neoprene leg part - says they’re much more comfortable. I’d say she’s ‘average’ sized (12 ish) and she has plenty of leg room, enough room for thick wellie socks.

fyn · 02/11/2022 14:45

Another vote for le Chameau - I’ve had mine for daily wear working in agriculture for 7 year, still going strong and very comfortable!
