What should I do to my face to keep it youthful if I don't want Botox?

I don't want anything that's a cosmetic procedure but want to know what I should be doing to my face to keep it youthful?

Should I get facials and if so what type and how often and where from?

Currently I;

Use cleanser morning and night

Use Paula's choice exfoliate each night (contains BHA)

And then use moisturiser

I also use SPF moisturiser daily

What else should I be doing? I'm 35

Gua sha! Relatively cheap to buy a semi precious face tool. Plenty of videos to show you how to use it. Also dermo roller £5-10. Go for the 0.3mm as you can use this twice a week with a face serum. These two have kept me youthful!

Blossomtoes · 30/10/2022 17:56

Smile a lot. It takes ten years off anyone.

A580Hojas · 30/10/2022 17:59

Face yoga. Lots of FB groups.

Rubbishname101 · 30/10/2022 18:00

Eat at least 30 different types of fruit and veg a week, drink lots of water, exercise regularly, get at least 7 hours a night.

BoxOfCats · 30/10/2022 18:00

I would switch from an SPF moisturiser to a separate moisturiser and SPF. Make sure you're applying enough SPF as well!

Arnaquer · 30/10/2022 18:01

If you use a separate SPF, do you put that over or under your makeup?

InsertPunHere · 30/10/2022 18:02

Don't smoke, that's insanely aging for skin. Keep hydrated and always use SPF, have a good diet, have good sleep hygiene.

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 30/10/2022 18:03

Eat well
Spf daily
Low alcohol
Keep skin hydrated
Keep your body hydrated
Tretinoin

I get mine from Dermatica, I started using it at 29, before that I used Retinol for two years - I'm nearly 33 and have the face of a baby - just kidding but I do have lovely skin!

@Rubbishname101 Agreed, only thing that really works for me is the trinity of sleep, drink enough and veg/eating less junk. Will add enough exercise as gets the circulation going so I look more vibrant in the face.

LondonLovie · 30/10/2022 18:09

Good vitamin c oil in the morning has made a huge difference to my skin. I use a strong retinol evening and the lines are much better

Longerthanfiveweeks · 30/10/2022 18:10

Honestly, it’s mainly genetic.

people with expressive faces will develop more lines and wrinkles. Some people’s faces don’t move much, so they stay smooth.

i personally think facial sagging is the most ageing and there’s not really much you can do about that ( outside of surgery) it’s genetic. Some people’s faces just hold up well, some don’t.

You can wreck your face with drink/ smoking/ sun. But I think the effect of youth preserving lotions/ potions etc is minimal compared to your genetic inheritance.

JamSandle · 30/10/2022 18:15

Some great tips here and genes play a big role too.

DeeofDenmark · 30/10/2022 18:17

Eat well, sleep well, don’t smoke or drink and the only thing to touch your skin is suncream.

Gruelle · 30/10/2022 18:20

It’s thirty plant based foods, I think, rather than just fruit and vegetables. So that includes nuts and seeds, grains and pulses, herbs and spices.

I was going to say sleep - but you’re 35! Go out and live your life to the fullest - because when you’re 95 you’ll want more than smooth skin to look back on …

Waterfallstop · 30/10/2022 18:20

Rosehip oil every night. I love the True one. I'm more than 10 years older than you and have lovely skin and other than this a very basic skincare of Cerave face wash and moisturiser am.

AbsoluteTruths · 30/10/2022 18:20

I agree with Longerthanfiveweeks Sagging is aging and really just linked to genes/face structure but does age. I had some fillers for sagging jowls, the doctor said as we age we either wrinkle or sag, it's often one more than the other. I'm 55, smoke, barely a wrinkle but had the beginnings of jowls. Very thrilled with them anyway, that was 18 months ago and they still look good as new. My dm is a wrinkler and I guess botox would benefit that. She uses every potion under the sun and is still wrinkled, exactly like her mother - same bone structure. I take after my df.

I think genetics count for a lot but I also am doing as much as I can to help myself. I remember years ago when there was that TV show and they tested all the anti aging products to see which worked I think it was around 2006 and boots protect and perfect was the only thing that actually worked so I used that religiously. Then later it was the ordinary skincare everyone was talking about and I used their retinol, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and about 4 other serums as well as spf! Now it seems to be all about SPF, tret and vitamin c! So currently I'm using skin+me which contains tret, azelaic acid and niacinamide at night occasionally with cervave moisturiser. Then in the morning I use Garnier vitamin c serum and garner SPF 50, which is a bit more scaled back. My skin looks really good for my age people often think I look 10 years younger. I think most of it is down to genetics but m not going to take that risk and not use anything!

Code for a month free of skin+me just £3.50 p&p if anyone's interested!

Hyaluronic acid, vitamin c serum and a hydrating moisturiser in the morning then niacinamide followed by retinol at night works for me

Bestcatmum · 30/10/2022 18:25

Anything you put on it will be a waste of time if you smoke, drink alcohol or eat junk food.

Agree with this

smoking and sun exposure hugely accelerate the process but assuming you avoid those things I also think it’s just luck of the draw.

angstridden2 · 30/10/2022 18:29

Don’t lose loads of weight (Barbara Cartland may have had a point) do everything in moderation and if you’re lucky, have a generally happy life. The rest is luck but is it really so awful to look the age you are?

Cotswoldmama · 30/10/2022 18:32

Oh I've also started taking collagen supplements too

OooooSweetVampireOMine · 30/10/2022 18:36

Hrt

Floraflower3 · 30/10/2022 18:38

Prescription strength skincare (things like Dermatica, Skin and Me, Zo) and daily SPF will be the most important long term things to do.

Anything you put on it will be a waste of time if you smoke, drink alcohol or eat junk food.

However if you look after it you will help negate the impact of these wicked choices (I’m 52 and was recently mistaken for 10 yrs younger, but drink far too much and love the sun)
