What should I do to my face to keep it youthful if I don't want Botox?

I don't want anything that's a cosmetic procedure but want to know what I should be doing to my face to keep it youthful?

Should I get facials and if so what type and how often and where from?

Currently I;

Use cleanser morning and night

Use Paula's choice exfoliate each night (contains BHA)

And then use moisturiser

I also use SPF moisturiser daily

What else should I be doing? I'm 35

Thanks All! I think I'll try retinol perhaps I don't want anything too strong - is retinol safe? Has anyone had side effects from it?

Also any recommendations on which retinol to go for?

There are lots of known side effects from Retinol, dryness, purging initially. But it's a long term option. I've used it since my late twenties (early 30s now) and I only experienced dryness which I manage with increased hydration products. I use Tret from Dermatica which is a stronger version. I didn't experience dryness from over the counter products, my favourite of those was Medik8 Crystal Retinol.

Drinking water is the single best thing you can provide to your skin to keep ot youthful. Forget the potions and lotions. Hydration hydration hydration

MissMaple82 · 02/11/2022 14:45

Oh, and suncream!

I thought there wasn't any evidence that consuming water helped with water loss from the skin?

There is lots of scientific research behind Tret actually - it's the only clinically proven technique

Do nothing, and just accept that we all age. Far less stressful and will save you a fortune in useless lotions and potions.

Except tretinoin isn't useless so if you want to use something, it's better to use something proven to work

Yep. I think the hydration thing is a myth. There are many benefits to drinking more water but I have never found better skin to be one of them.

IndiGlowie · 02/11/2022 15:42

A decent factor 30 sun cream . It's the sun that causes wrinkles. Can't do anything about sagging though .

SimonaRazowska · 02/11/2022 16:08

Retinol made my face but. But I have sensitive skin

A lot of skincare is a con, but a bit of moisturiser, Sun cream, vit C or retinol (if your skin can take it) helps a tiny bit...

What you eat, how you live, does more

My morning dog walk in the fresh air does more for my skin than any ointment

I get mine online from Farmacia Andorra, as I am not in the UK so can't use Dermatica or Skin & Me.
The brand name in Spain is Retirides.

Apologies for the late reply, I buy from the same place. If you buy 3 or 4 tubes at a time, it mitigates against the cost of postage.

Quick question re Dermatica - how do you just order tretinoin? I’ve gone through the consultation and it just comes up with a ‘specialist formula’ for me, but it doesn’t say what that is?

How do you know it contains tretinoin and in what strength?

Dermatica will email you with the formula they've created for you.. if you've asked for aging stuff, then chances r it will have tret in it.. they will likely start you on a low dose along with azelaic acid and niacinamide an then over three months gradually increase the tret. They will tell you wat theyr sending you for the first three months.. so just check Ur emails x

PETA facercise YouTube exercises - Australian lady. Once you get the hang of them it’s 10 mins several times a week

A fringe. Much cheaper than any beauty treatments.

Yes!
Exercise that gets the blood to your face will help too - or just do a downward dog.

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 18/02/2023 11:13

I don’t think there are any miracle creams that can prevent aging. As long as you are cleansing and moisturising every day, whether you by a basic £1 lotion or spend £200, I don’t think it makes a huge amount of difference to how you actually look.

aging is just genetics and lifestyle. You can’t control genetics but lifestyle you can - don’t smoke, don’t drink, no (or limited) processed foods, plenty of fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds, spf in the sun, plenty of water, sleep, plenty of exercise and fresh air.

buniin · 18/02/2023 11:21

It's down to genetics and bone structure. Those with high cheekbones will age more slowly, less sagging, in the lower face, for example. Too much weight, while useful for a while in looking plumped, will eventually succumb to gravity and drag down your face.

Hydrate, exercise, get a lot of sleep. Use Vaseline as an eye cream and any moisturiser for face. I wouldn't use tret long term, though it's great for acne sufferers. Face yoga can contribute to lines, I wouldn't bother with that.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/02/2023 11:36

"I wouldn't use tret long term"

Why not?

TotalLackofSelfAwareness · 18/02/2023 11:55

There are videos on YouTube from a Doctor who demonstrates a lymphatic face massage and also a face tapping routine, if you do that everyday, it makes a big difference to the look of you skin.
Also, like others have said, stop smoking and avoid sunburn.
Don't overdo the exercise/diet regime, being too thin can be aging once you get older (IMHO)

Eat well
Spf daily
Low alcohol
Keep skin hydrated
Keep your body hydrated
Tretinoin

I get mine from Dermatica, I started using it at 29, before that I used Retinol for two years - I'm nearly 33 and have the face of a baby - just kidding but I do have lovely skin!

If you want to try it www.dermatica.co.uk/referrer/Y2K0NE

Love the advice here.

I’m 33 and have been putting off tretinoin for no reason. This post is the kick up the bum I need. I would like a face like a baby’s! ☺️

doadeer · 18/02/2023 12:33

@Usernamen 😂😂
I do get ID'd buying matches.

There are some great Tret fb groups with excellent advice on if you want to start

Sadlifter · 18/02/2023 12:38

I honestly think it's genetic. Both my mum and grandma had lovely skin and I have good skin at 56 despite doing almost nothing to it. I quite often don't even take my make up off. I shower daily so face gets washed with water then. I use a moisturiser, anything that's on offer and not strong smelling and that's it.

RiverSkater · 18/02/2023 12:52

Become a nun. 😆

They seem to age very well without a care in the world!

But seriously, tretinoin with sandwich method moisturisers and SOF 50 long term together with
a gua sha, face exercise and SPF 50 should set you up.

Even Chanel are selling an overpriced Gua Sha type tool.

RiverSkater · 18/02/2023 12:54

@TotalLackofSelfAwareness could you name the channel please?

Usernamen · 18/02/2023 12:56

I agree with the comments that genes play a big part. However, people’s idea of looking young for their age is definitely subjective. I went on a charity mountain climb with a group and got chatting to a woman who said she often doesn’t take her make up off and moisturises on and off and that it was her genes that made her look ‘10 years younger’, but to me she definitely looked her age if not older! 😝 (Not that there is anything wrong with looking one’s age, of course.)

To me, the likes of Tess Daly and Jennifer Lopez look good for their age. Most people just look normal/like their age.
