Funeral dress help

I've just got out of hospital and need to find a suitable outfit for a close family member's funeral this week. I have a non existent budget and it must be of the traditional, black formal type.
I usually dress very casually (jeans T-shirt etc) so have very few smart dress options. Not helped by the fact I have put on weight in the last 2 years so none of my old clothes actually fit. I'm now a size 14.
Please help me look put together and not let 'The side' down, stylish people!

I’m sorry for your loss.

Would this dress be any good? Knee length if you’re not tall. Good with opaque tights and long boots perhaps. And room for thermals underneath.

What shape are you? And what’s your budget?

could these work?

Do you own a black/ navy top of some kind? You could try a charity shop for a black skirt/ trousers.

Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink · 30/10/2022 07:22

Very budget friendly - www2.hm.com/en_gb/productpage.0923522002.html

I got the dress for mums funeral, last year, at next. I can’t find it on their site now. But if you look at next dresses and filter down to the next brand there’s a few options depending on shape and budget.

I also find next dresses on the large size.

I use the dress I wore for mums wedding for work now.

Lots of people will have a nice funeral dress/ black formal dress. Could you ask a similar sized friend to borrow for the day?

@Iwritethissittinginthekitchensink would you really wear a body con dress to a traditional, formal funeral?
I must be out of touch.

gogohmm · 30/10/2022 07:29

Charity shop? If you have a high street like mine they'll be several in close proximity, one is bound to have a suitable outfit at an affordable price

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/10/2022 07:29

Asda, £18
Asda £20

gogohmm · 30/10/2022 07:31

My go to dress is a wrap dress from Amazon, £29.99

gogohmm · 30/10/2022 07:31

Yes, with smart heels and a formal/wool coat why not?

AdaColeman · 30/10/2022 07:38

Marks & Spencer have several black jersey dresses in the £25 to £35 price range, and black skirts from about £15 if you had a suitable top to wear in grey or white for instance.
Another thought is Sainsburys clothing section, they are usually very economically priced.

So sorry for your loss. Thanks

Pansypotter123 · 30/10/2022 07:42

Primark, Tesco, Asda, Sainsburys?

Anjelika · 30/10/2022 07:43

Vinted?

I definitely would.

I am 40. Can’t think of a time that I wouldn’t have worn similar to be honest.

Fairyliz · 30/10/2022 08:18

Are you near any charity shops? I’m a volunteer in one and we have loads of smart black ‘work’ dresses in stock which would be totally appropriate for a funeral.
I assume lots more people are donating them as they are working from home so don’t need these sort of clothes any more.
It’s always worth asking the staff if they have any in the store room, as we have lots more there than we can put out on the shop floor.

qwerdi · 30/10/2022 08:23

I went to the local charity shops and picked up a black dress that I wore that week to a loved ones funeral.

Okay happy to admit I'm the one in the wrong here. I haven't been to a funeral in years, so I probably mis-remember the dress code. Apologies.

No need to apologise to me. Just a difference in experiences I would assume. 😊

@LesserKnownKardashian there’s no right or wrong. Though your view on bodycons is at odds with your username! 😉

Msgiggles30 · 30/10/2022 10:50

Peacocks and matalan both have a range of black dresses online and are budget friendly and good sizing. I am size 14 a d shop there x
