So I’ve been eyeing up this coat for ages

but didn’t have my size but did this week.it arrived today and dh has done nothing but take the piss. “Oh it’s not the prettiest coat, is it supposed to be trendy? When I looked at a coat like that you said it was awful” (no he didn’t and neither did I) Just snipey things. Then when I said anything he’s “just having a joke, I can’t have a laugh.” yeah ok, I’m 64, I’m short, fat and no longer “trendy, I don’t go anywhere much except walking to work or dog walking. The coat is really warm, but if he’s going to be mean, I may as well send it back. (He’s not being tight btw, he’s always saying I never treat myself to anything. His dad was like that, as he likes to remind me, always being cruel about anything he wore out of the ordinary. It’s really got me down.

Does he say he was hurt by his dad's attitude? If so, ask him why he is copying him.

I have that coat, and although I’m not short I am the same age as you. It’s one of the most used items in my wardrobe, cost per wear is pennies. I’d def buy again if necessary. It’s not about the coat, it’s about your husband thinking it’s ok to make you feel crap about something you like, and trying to suck the joy out of things. Wear it and enjoy it.

I would tell him that he's turning into his dad. And keep the coat.

The coat's nice but I can't tell whether the coat looks nice on you. He shouldn't upset you but I think he can give an honest opinion if it doesn't suit you.

Is anything in particular preventing you from doing much other than going to work and walking the dog? Do you have any friends, family, colleagues you might dress up a little to go out with? If not then you need a new activity.

And plenty of 64 year olds care about looking stylish / fashionable / on trend or whatever. Please don’t feel you’re excluded by virtue of age!

Dd, who is trendy and stylish, says it’s great. (Looks nicer on) I don’t know why he’s being a cock, he never usually is. And he knows better than to question what I chose to wear. That would have left me conflicted too OP. You need to get into a mindset where you can decide for yourself if you like the coat. Fwiw, i don't ask OH anymore. We're very different. So i don't ask, i do get compliments from friends at work and i feel happy in myself with what I'm wearing!

😂 Love it! I love clothes that look shit on the hanger and great when on a person. It's part of how you don't look like a sheep but like someone with their own personal style. Many people pass by great clothes because of how they look on the hanger. Particularly relevant for people with hourglass shapes, or shorter wider people. Hangers do clothes that suit them no favours at all.
