Natural nails anyone?

Anyone else ditched the gels/acrylics & going natural on nails?

I'm recovering nails from acrylic's. I'm trying to hold out & let them recover naturally without gels etc. I am considering Builder Gel but also thinking of money saving!

After a lifetime of regular polish and the maintenance that goes with it (reapplying every 5 days or so) I bought a kit to do gels at home. Total game changer. A week in on my first set and not one chip

Swissnotswiss · 24/10/2022 14:54

I always have natural nails now as weirdly the smell of nail varnish on my fingers stops me falling asleep. 😂Maybe it's a menopause thing as I can smell everything a lot more now so can only have nail varnish on my toes. I buff my fingernails instead.

HermioneWeasley · 24/10/2022 14:56

I’ve never used gels or acrylics, just polish and nail wraps.

FingersCrossedSA · 24/10/2022 14:56

I've just ditched builder gel after a long time. It was amazing but my nails are so weak. It's so tempting to go back but I'm trying to stick it out for a while at least.
(My point is that builder gel is not necessarily much better than anything else!)

JorisBonson · 24/10/2022 15:00

Tried it for 2 months with all manner of strengthener on them - they all broke and I have acrylics again now. Will have 1 round of infils to let them grow a bit then go back to sns on my natural nails.

Swissnotswiss · 24/10/2022 15:08

Meant to say I switched to nail polish from gel as gel was ruining my nails.

GreyhairedHobbit · 24/10/2022 15:10

Just nails here, no polish , just some nail clippers, and hand cream at night. Life is too short. (I don’t get the whole eyebrow thing either😱)

A580Hojas · 24/10/2022 15:14

Always natural. I'm almost phobic about false nails on anybody, they give me the absolute willies.

quirkychick · 24/10/2022 15:17

Another with just natural nails. Colour on my finger nails annoys me, so I only bother with my toes. I am lucky as I have strong nails that grow fast and in fact regularly have to cut them back. I use a buffer every 6 weeks or so, when I remember and use handcream regularly.

Comeback25 · 24/10/2022 16:27

Natural nails here too. Buggered nails over the years with acrylics, gels etc. As I'm older nails were splitting and ridged. After a couple of months on collagen supplement's they're strong again. Occasionally wear clear varnish now.

Lilliflip · 24/10/2022 16:29

Yes, I’ve ditched the gel polish, and pretty much ditched normal polish. It was ruining my nails, and it’s a vicious circle. Once I’d gone through the initial annoyance of snapping and peeling etc they got far healthier.
I just use polish every now and again.

Opposite here, after a few years of natural nails I've just booked a gel mani. I'm sick of my nails breaking so far down I can't even fully trim/file the edges so they catch on everything.

Flyinggeesei234 · 24/10/2022 16:53

Yes. Been using strengthener and looking after them. Much prefer natural, mainly due to growing to dislike the thickness of gel and regrowth.

XingMing · 24/10/2022 17:11

Dior Nail Glow is great to gussy up natural nails; it gives colour and shine.

Flyinggeesei234 · 24/10/2022 17:18

I had to grow out the weakened nails but using the Mavala strengthener I’m quite pleased with how they’re coming along. Never going back to gel.

@Comeback25 I take Collagen supplements too, though I had strong nails before.
@Lilliflip and @Flyinggeesei234 you both have lovely nails.

quirkychick · 24/10/2022 20:21

Actually, I need a new buffer, any recommendations?

TheFlis12345 · 24/10/2022 21:10

Can anyone recommend the collagen supplement they take? I am planning to stop gels soon and think my nails, which were rubbish in the first place, will need help!

Lilliflip · 24/10/2022 21:14

Thanks @quirkychick 😁 I don’t buff mine, I use a Leighton Denny glass file, sometimes use solar oil, and use lots of hand lotion.
Im also thinking of starting collagen supplements, do you have any recommendations on lease?

quirkychick · 24/10/2022 21:38

I take Vital Proteins Collagen Peptide powder, 1 scoop in my morning coffee, it's tasteless in coffee but I didn't like it in tea. I have also taken Great Lakes. I used to use Liquid Body, but can't get hold of it, any more. I usually get it from amazon and the price determines which one! You want to look for no added extras just collagen from whichever source listed. Bone broth is also full of collagen, if you prefer. If you're vegan or vegetarian you can get collagen booster supplements.

ChaToilLeam · 24/10/2022 21:44

Natural nails here too. I hate the feeling of false nails etc, so I just do my own, keep them very short and apply a nail strengthening clear polish. I paint them up only on special occasions because it chips so fast.

FeralWitch · 24/10/2022 21:45

Another vote for Dior Glow. I actually got two compliments today!

MarieJ1987 · 24/10/2022 21:47

Absolutely prefer natural, I just think they look nicer.

Natural nails anyone?
DramaAlpaca · 24/10/2022 22:05

@MarieJ1987 I agree. Mine look very like yours.

I put polish on occasionally but nothing else.

perseverence · 24/10/2022 22:11

These look lovely. Albeit quite long for everyday tasks.

Could't and wouldn't want to have them that long.
