Is there a reason that certain clothes styles just aren’t made?

I’m an Apple shape so always look for clothes that flatter the tummy and I don’t understand why certain things aren’t made.

For instance, swing cami tops are very flattering and common in the summer. Why can I never find a long sleeve version?

Skater dresses are also very flattering, why do they all have high neck lines?

I’m looking for evening dresses at the moment and they are all really fitted or really puffy. I just want something in between that hides the tummy.

I know the odd one of these does exist but you really do have to look hard.

What am I missing, why don’t the designers make them?

You can get long sleeve swing tops and tunics and low neck skater dresses. I get what you’re saying though but I suppose they only make what they think will sell. At the moment the style isn’t really on hiding the tummy so maybe they think it won’t sell as well.

Next often have stuff to suit an older shape

LizziesTwin · 23/10/2022 07:35

American Vintage sells long sleeved T-shirts which flow.

I guess because they make things on models that don't have big tummies

I work in next and I'm a very hourglass shape . I find a lot of their stuff doesn't accommodate a waist so I would start your search there !

I hope you don't actually mean older. The op says she was apple shaped, not old!

Travelplans · 23/10/2022 07:43

@Madagascary I’m only 34, I don’t want to dress to suit an older shape.

@Kanaloa I know some are available, it’s just hard to find anything nice. I’m really not a fan of tunic tops.

I get they only make what sells but even when skater dresses were all the rage it was hard to find one with a lower neck line.

I guess I’ve always wondered why clothes aren’t sold to suit shapes. In my group of friends, I am tall and slim but have a big tummy, another is small and slim with big boobs, another carries her weight on her hips and the other has a big bum. Why do we all struggle so much to find clothes that flatter us?

I always see something in the shops and think “if that had long sleeves it would be perfect” or “if that dress didn’t have the back cut out I’d love it”… I completely get what you’re saying OP! I think the only option is to get clothes made bespoke but that’s not a cheap choice!

Kanaloa · 23/10/2022 07:45

I think it’s because relatively few people actually dress for their own shape/colouring etc. They follow the fashions and trends, so that’s what sells well, despite being often unflattering/not as well suited as other types of outfits. And then you find that if you do want to buy something classic and we’ll made to suit your shape it costs a fortune!

Madagascary · 23/10/2022 07:46

Older people tend to be more appley imo

lightand · 23/10/2022 07:48

Good question.

Fashion!
15 or so years ago, there were sister dress with scoop necklines everywhere.

olivehater · 23/10/2022 07:55

Well I was an apple when I was a teenager and no I wasn’t fat either! That’s such a nasty thing to write! I don’t want to dress older. For what it’s worth being an apple isn’t all bad! You have great legs, bum and breasts and most peoples flat bellies get wrecked by pregnancy anyway so you have less to lose!

WitchyMother · 23/10/2022 07:59

It's like having difficult feet, it's cheaper to make things to the standard which varies from country to country eg for a taller person in Germany or for a skinnier person in France, Italy and Japan.
There was Bravissimo for busty women which closed down.

I've had a round tummy all my life, even when I was very slim my tits and tummy were rounder in comparison to the rest of me. Why would a 34 yo want to shop in stores for older ladies (no offense to older ladies) at 34 I was still dressing like I did in my 20s.
Op have you looked on places like ASOS or even Ebay. Search skater dresses, fit and flare dresses and tea dresses. I've got a round tummy and big boobs, I wear v neck t shirts and round neck tshirts, shirt dresses are great. Tea dresses with a v neck. Obviously fit and flare. I go for a more fitted dress as its a lot more flattering then too much fabric.

MistyRock · 23/10/2022 08:06

My go to shop was Oasis, I've heard they are now called Roses something or other. Available online via Next?

Whataretheodds · 23/10/2022 08:11

Where do you normally look for clothes, OP?

Unfortunately the current fashion doesn't flatter apple shapes. I hear pears rejoicing the return of waists and wide leg/bootleg trousers and longer skirts.

Have you looked at arket and cos for swingy shapes?

I just googled 'skater dress uk' and lots of non-high neck, tummy-skimming options came up.

Madagascary · 23/10/2022 08:48

Swing cami thing 🤔

Is there a reason that certain clothes styles just aren’t made?
Bramblejoos · 23/10/2022 08:50

Gudrun Sjodgen stuff is flared - sadly I can’t wear it as I have big boobs

Swing cami thing 🤔

And does that have long sleeves?

Cantonet · 23/10/2022 09:06

A good slouchy t shirt to disguise a tummy is the Hush Avalon. It's a similar shape to a cami with sleeves 😉

Kettlewell Colours have long sleeved swing tops.
