My foundation! Help!

Oh God, I looked at my makeup in natural daylight yesterday with my glasses on. It looks bloody awful with foundation soaked into pores on my chin and around my nose. I was looking very close up so it's not as bad from a distance but I still need help!

I took it all off and reapplied using pore professional primer but it pilled so that's not the answer. Today put my moisturiser on a few mins before foundation instead of ages before but that didn't help.

What's the magic answer ladies? Oh, am mid fifties which probably doesn't help!!

Dusting of loose powder over the top? I am 42 and just can’t go without some sort of powder.

Carrieonmywaywardsun · 21/10/2022 16:35

Do you use a setting powder?
Try a beauty sponge to apply foundation if you don't already

RockinRosie · 22/10/2022 10:41

I don’t use powder but will give it a go and see whether it helps. Thank you!

I'm 51, it's all about the skin prep before you apply foundation.

The other thing is I use less foundation now and go for more of a fresh face look. Mix a little foundation with the vita liberata skin blur.

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/10/2022 13:17

What foundation is it? Perhaps time to switch?

RockinRosie · 22/10/2022 15:32

@jeaux90, what skin prep please? As it stands, I cleanse am, apply moisturiser and foundation. Pm double cleanse, aha toner, crystal retinol or sleep glycolic and moisturise. Is there anything else I can add that would help? Thanks!

@dontgobaconmyheart, Nars Light Reflecting - just switched to it in the spring and it seemed great then!

Do you use a facial scrub? I do 2/3 times a week otherwise my make up doesn’t sit well.

You need to let moisturiser sink in then primer, let it sink in then foundation. Make sure your using products that suit your skin type.

Also, dermaplaning makes a big difference to products sinking into your skin properly and make up sits so much better.

jeaux90 · 23/10/2022 13:17

@RockinRosie I cleanse, toner, serum, another serum then moisturiser. Let them all sink in before applying the next.

Then I use This Works photo finish primer before putting in a mix of foundation and the beauty blur from vita liberata.

I have dry skin though which is why I layer up.

RockinRosie · 23/10/2022 14:33

@MilkToastHoney would I need a scrub with the retinol and glycolic? I don’t use one as thought I didn’t need to but it could certainly help.

@jeaux90, am thinking I need to have another look at my skincare and what goes on in the morning. I’ve been using a moisturiser for ages, that works but I guess my skin is getting older and maybe needs a bit more.

You're either using too many products before adding foundation or your serum and foundation aren't compatible. If one is oil based and the other water they'll pull away from each other causing the pilling

BryceQuinlanTheFirst · 23/10/2022 20:50

I would not use a scrub with Retinol and glycolic that's a recipe for a damaged skin barrier.

Is your skin hydrated? Before makeup does it look well nourished? Do you use enough moisturiser (does that have Spf in, and how much are you using?). A hydrating toner before could help if you feel your skin needs that, an essence like cosrx snail muchin.

Have you ever tried Erborian CC cream instead of a foundation?

hartof · 23/10/2022 20:53

Setting spray between each layer! For day to day I use a revolution spray which really does work. If I'm going out I use Charlotte tilbury

gingertoast · 23/10/2022 20:58

You need to match oil or water based primer & foundation. If you try and mix oil/water it will eventually separate and look patchy

jeaux90 · 23/10/2022 21:06

Have a look at Medik 8, they have curated regimes for different skins.

WithGoodReason · 23/10/2022 21:14

PP's have already mentioned most of the things I do-

make sure your moisturiser and foundation are compatible.
Use a wet beauty sponge to apply foundation
Spray your setting spray onto the sponge in between each layer of make up or directly onto face if housing brushes. Dab lightly.
Don't use scrub as well as retinol etc. I did this recently and it really damaged my skin.
Also look into slugging- basically adding an extra layer of moisturiser at the end of the day by adding a barrier cream/Vaseline.

RockinRosie · 23/10/2022 22:48

Thanks everyone for the comments and suggestions. I don’t use primer before foundation, just a Caudalie moisturiser that has been fine until now. I actually have the snail serum that @BryceQuinlanTheFirst mentioned and will try that before my moisturiser. @jeaux90, I do use a few Medik 8 products and really like them.

Was in much the same situation at 60. Visited lancome counter. They cleansed tone and mouisterised. Matched skin tone in foundation and cc cream. Told me how to do
Eyes mascara lipstick and toning. Beauty box was on sale for 50.and i only had to buy foundation and cc cream. I spent 120.in total.and came out a beautiful make up bag full to the brim. All skincare primer toner cleansing milk
Mascara eye shadow lipstick blusher eye pencil lip pencil and perfume. It is still going strong. I have been complimented so i just go with the flow. Lots of small samples also. Well worth buying and staff so helpful. I bought it for my birthday 1 year ago and have not had to replace anything.yet. my best purchase ever.

RockinRosie · 24/10/2022 11:27

Oh @Nannyamc, that’s absolutely fantastic. Such a lovely treat and fantastic to get shown how to apply it all. That’s the sort of thing I should do … except, knowing me, I couldn’t settle on one brand!

Yep use a damp sponge beauty blender, really helps. And a setting spray
