Help with make up

I never got into wearing make up when I was younger. The most I would wear in my 30s was a BB cream or cc cream or a tinted moisturer. They all seem the same to me.

I have an event next week and I would like to look good. My current face cream is a las Roche posay CC cream with 30 spf. Truth me told. It's awful on me. It looks like cake on my face. I hate it.

Can anyone recommend a face cream that will tint out some redness on the face. Also can anyone recommend a waterproof mascara that won't lump on the eyelashes? Also I would like to use some eyeshadow. I have hooded eyes. My dress will be green. Should I go for green eye shadow or a different colour. Maybe an earthy colour. Maybe brown eyeshadow. The eyes are blue.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

You need to go and try some out really, especially eyeshadow and how to apply (and matching to outfit generally isn’t the best way forward, just choose a colour that you feel suits you best). Erborian CC cream is fantastic and they do a red correct version, find a stockist and go and try.

Go and let the pros tell you. It's a nice treat to sit in a chair and have them try things on you. Unless you hate that kind of thing of course.

If you don't want to; Brown eyeshadow is a good start as goes with almost everything, and I like the Clinique CC cream (go CC if you want to correct redness). I dont use waterproof mascara so can't help there.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll look lovely :)

A make up trial wouldn't really be for me. I don't have time this weekend to sit down at a make up counter.

I am making an online order for a few bits. I have an eye shadow palette gone in and mascara and doing the 3 for 2 No7 offer.

Do I need a setting spray or could I get away without it?

It would be better to buy a eyelash comb to run through the lashes.

A rusty brown color brings out blue eyes

Have a look at colour correction foundation - I like the boots no7 one as it’s light and you don’t notice you’re wearing it.

Juicylychee · 21/10/2022 06:14

Erborian cc cream

ToastAndBeans · 21/10/2022 06:23

Have a look at beginners make up advice on YouTube, to help with application etc.

lentilly · 21/10/2022 06:25

The no7 range is a good place to start but you're best getting to a counter if you can so you can check the colour match. The problem with the BB creams is that if the colour is wrong it will show.

lentilly · 21/10/2022 06:27

If its just for one event maybe look into buying some samples off ebay I buy little pots to help colour match.

YukoandHiro · 21/10/2022 06:29

How old are you? I've found Ive had to stop wearing eyeshadow now I've hit 40 as it sits in the crease and looks really ageing.

I would concentrate on a nicer base and some good highlighter, possibly a mascara and a really good lipstick

YukoandHiro · 21/10/2022 06:29

YSL mascara is the best but I can't remember if they do a waterproof version

Rainmakerof69 · 21/10/2022 06:54

Since you're in a rush I'd go to Boots No7 make up and ask for advice there. They won't do your make up but will colour match a foundation. I'd also buy a cream blusher and eyeshadow in a stick for ease of application (no brushes required if you don't have them).

Watch Robert Welsh on YouTube, he wears gorgeous eye makeup and gives great tips on applying it

Thank you so much for the recommendations for the Erborian CC cream. I looked it up on tiktok and it looks like exactly what I am looking for. Some light coverage and colour.

I went to check it out last night and boots had an offer but I fell asleep and when I went to check out my order this morning, the offer was gone. I'm fuming. I then found it on another site with also 20% off but I was so busy in work and I kept getting pulled away. Even at break time. My cup of tea turned to tar the tea bag sat in it for so long. By the time I got a few minutes to spare at lunch time, that offer was gone too. It breaks my heart to pay full price for it now after seeing it on offer and missing two offers.

They do samples of that on feel unique sometimes

I love La Roche Posay but hear you about their cc cream - it's so dense and heavy. It's weird as their other product are so good.

I second (third?) the Erborian BB recommendation. It's the first base product I've used that I can't see on my face and it actually makes my very unglowy skin look a bit glowy.
I wouldn't go matchy with the eyeshadow. A brown/ bronze would look great with blue eyes. Or maybe a plum/ aubergine? Something like the Laura Mercier caviar sticks would be a good idea as they are easy to blend and smudge in without needing any skill or tools. I'd go with a bit of blusher and tinted lip balm too if you want low fuss but extra glow type products.

sleepwhenidie · 23/10/2022 15:14

LM caviar sticks are beautiful and v easy, apply as eyeliner and smudge outwards with a brush. The amethyst looks good on everyone I think, and would be lovely with blue eyes. Cocoa also fab
