Alternative to balayage which isn’t highlights

I’m not sure if there is such a thing!

I have long hair which for years had blonde highlights. Last year I changed to a balayage which I absolutely love, but the roots and top part are darker than previously, so I’m getting grey coming through a lot more obviously now than I used to. I do use L’Oreal touch-up spray in between but find it makes my scalp a bit itchy. I’m finding the cost and time burden of getting root regrowth done every 6 weeks a bit much now.

I’m a bit reluctant to go back to blonde highlights and wondered if anyone else has come across a viable alternative? I’m not averse to going to the hairdresser, just not quite as often! Going completely grey isn’t what I want to do at the moment.

No magic solution other than dying your roots to cover the grey or highlighting them to disguise it

Bunny2021 · 19/10/2022 13:19

unfortunately not - my roots are coming through quite grey and my hairdresser has advised that I go back to highlights with a root smudge to hide the greys more as they'll be less stark against blonde than brunette.

Baby lights-sort of a toned down version of highlights-it's what I have (am having tonight actually) because the roots bit of my balayage is a bit dark

Is it the fact your roots are too dark that you don’t like? In which case could you ask for balayage but with a lighter root blend than you currently have?

I don’t mind the root colour at all, it’s just that it shows the greys a lot more!

I might give What @warofthemonstertrucks suggests.

I'm in a similar position but with darker hair so the regrowth is awful. I don't suit blonde. I'm going to ask for a balayage with ash colours to try to disguise for longer

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 19/10/2022 19:23

I get a balyage with baby lights (very fine highlights) through the crown.

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 19/10/2022 19:24

Posted too soon. The baby lights take focus off the grey roots. They're not chunky like foil highlights so a bit more modern.

Why is your root colour not your natural colour? Then you could just use a home dye kit to do your touch ups
