Help with outfit for formal 'do'

I've been invited to an evening event with a 'formal' dress code.

Problem is 1) I'm now size 16/18 and nothing I have already fits 2) I have NO sense of style but I prefer a classic look (and I'm the wrong side of 50) 3) I don't want to spend a fortune. 4) outfit will be squished in a suitcase for hours

Does anyone have any suggestions please? I don't know where to look.

can you say what colours suit you and if you have boobs? Also preferred footwear height.

Formal is pretty wide ... try and find out if it's black tie with long dresses or lounge suite in which case I would suggest a cocktail dress/midi length
