Hair colour too dark

So I got some balayage done around 8 months ago. I didn’t know the hairdresser would use bleach as otherwise I wouldn’t have done it, but having very dark brown hair with bleach meant the coloured bits would go ginger just weeks after I used toner.

I got fed up of using toner every 6 or so weeks and just wanted to go back to natural so went to the hairdresser for an all over colour that’s close to my natural. My hair is now almost black. Wasn’t that obvious in the salon with the lighting but it’s ridiculously dark.

What do I do? If I use at home colour remover, I assume I’ll be left with obviously bleached sections of my hair so I will need to dye it again. Would a clarifying shampoo work to make it lighter? Or is it because it’s been freshly dyed and the once I’ve washed it a few times the colour will be better?

I just want my natural hair back!

You can use a hair stripper but they are very harsh. Try using Pantene or Head and Shoulders, they are less harsh but will tone the colour out over a few weeks.

I was hoping that would work - a stronger shampoo over a few weeks. Fingers crossed!

Honestly, I’d leave it for a bit. It will probably rinse out to a lighter colour after washing.

I agree with letting it settle and deciding what to do if you're still not happy after a few washes.

I used a new dye over the summer on my hair and the hair turned really dark (and also, prple hue as opposed to my usual red/gigner).
I now love it. It took a bit to get used to it, but I will probably not go back to ginger now.

Did they use a permanent or a semi?

Glitteratitar · 17/10/2022 08:19

It was permanent dye. I wanted to go back to having natural hair so he went all over with a colour that was meant to be close to mine. Now I’ve got that artificial almost black hair look!

I'd leave it be for now as it will likely fade & be better for your hair - you don't want to end up with brittle hair . Mind you, if your hair was mine it'd be looking normal by 6 weeks and disappear completely after 8 weeks, mine never holds colour!
Nearer Christmas I'd maybe get some highlights in toning colours to lighten your hair further if it needs it.
