Currently wearing straight cut jeans, satin shirt slightly tucked in, peach boucle blazer with white trainers.

I think i look ok but still feel like I look a bit dated (probably because I'm a size 16). Any suggestions to make me look more stylish?

One problem I have is being poor at layering so its always a blazer and jeans over an armless top. I dont then feel confident to take off my jacket. I just dont have any nice day tops either.

Please style me!

What does everyone else wear?

LucyLoopyLu · 13/10/2022 11:05

Why don't you try and get some long sleeved tops that still work with your bottoms and blazers? That would be a good start.

I have a few and always looking out for more. I am a small size but also don't like my arms / feel the cold so I like a long or three quarter sleeve year round.

If you choose a thin enough fabric (like a satin or silk) it doesn't become too bulky under a cardigan and coat or a blazer.

Id really like to avoid blazers as i feel like i look a bit dated but im quite self conscious to just wear tops and trousers/skirts as i feel quite huge

Team are very slim and trim so wear jeans, trainers and vest tops

Reiss do great tops to wear with jeans and trainers. At 16, you’re not that huge. You could show your arms!

I think accessories can be a really forgotten part of a look and can make or break just about any outfit so I would maybe start there. Easy to play around and not break the bank too.

What about a below the knee skirt or on the knee if you have good knees and knee high boots? I have brown boots in suede and a black leather pair with some great skirts and then I wear various tops. The skirt can be cut on the bias and move so its flattering although I also have long dark denim too. Very comfortable to work in.

What about some plain tops then some slightly thicker material cardigans - like 'coatigan' thing

Pegasushaswings · 13/10/2022 19:27

What about some loose fitting trousers like Lucy & Yak Alexa? They look quite smart casual teamed up with a breton to then either a blazer or some jewellery with it? I think they are a good alternative if you are only used to wearing jeans or tailored trousers. However i love tailored trousers worn with casual tops and trainers too.

I think my uniform is zara blazer, vest top, straight cut jeans, supergas. It's a silly cycle I'm in, feeling bulky at work whereas when I'm out, I always look nice. I just dont feel I get it quite right at work. I'm early 40s. What do people think of wide leg trousers or jeans? Would it make me look too wide on bottom half?

@Pegasushaswings off to find those trousers!

I have these but they are not that good in cold weather as bit cropped. Not sure what tops suit them either

I am 29, size 12/14 and I've just bought the following for a new job:

  • wide leg trousers (high waist, tailored) in camel, brown and black, to wear with some edgy court ballet pumps with chains
  • roll neck jumper dress x 2 (autumnal colours Forest green and terracotta) to wear with doc martens and black tights and a black waist belt for shape.
  • check tailored jumpsuit with a belt waist for shape.
  • satin crinkled midi skirts with the above ballet flats and interchangeable tops

All are in autumnal and gem tones to suit my (brown) skin and the season.

I will also wear tan doc martens , tan high top converse, black high top converse run star hikes.

Oversized shirts and black wide leg trousers

  • make up wise I've found I look a lot more creative and put together when I do a light dewy base, mascara, brows and a nice bold lipstick.
  • hair is either worn big and curly or scraped with a centre part into a low bun

@SirBlobby brilliant post. Where did you get your trousers from? I think what I noticed was your mention of shape. I don't dress to accentuate my shape (hourglassy). So I feel boxy

I'm also small boob/hourglass athletic shape. I need a waist cinch to complete a look often otherwise I look bigger.

I got these trousers (amongst the other pairs) and most of my stuff is various brands from asos. I'm trying to be more careful as to what I order and the quality although I'm on a budget.

SirBlobby · 13/10/2022 20:36

Oh and tops wise I got the matching colours for the trousers, so camel/black/brown for a colour block look.
I got a roll neck top and also jumper set in those above colours ^^

So I can mix match them x

MirabelleYourVoice · 13/10/2022 21:29

I'm big boobs, biggish belly but smaller waist so I need something to accentuate my waist. What's a waist cinch?

Just buy anything from Cos. That’s what all creatives seem to wear.

Attictroll · 13/10/2022 21:57

Creative industries too...I've moved to wearing black wide legged trousers with my white trainers and either tucked in blouse or a smarter jumper in a bright snazzy colours. Sometimes I wear a denim jacket with black T-shirt and black trousers and pumps.

Cece92 · 13/10/2022 22:25

Hi OP I am a size 16 (I've lost 2 stone so was much bigger) I work in an office and I wear black flares trousers (elastic waist) and a top usually paired with a cardigan and either black clunky shoes or trainers. I'm not sure if I can attach photos but I did have a bit of a style overhaul when I lost weight. I sometimes wear black skinny jeans too with a top. X
