What do you think of this coat? I love it, DD hates it

Hi all, was looking for something of a shorter length but covering the bum, for autumn - mild winter. Ordered this, and love it so much! It is warm, it drapes beautifully, the sleeves are a bit more narrow towards the wrist so keep the warmth in. I just love wearing it. It's 81% wool, 19% polyamide.
Now, for clothing I listen to my DD15's advice, she is usually spot on. And she is not at all keen. What do you think?

I liked it until I saw the tassles, they aren't a good look on that style of jacket.

nomoreflyingducks · 13/10/2022 10:25

I don't like the over sized patch pocket on the front. It just doesn't seem to know which style it's aiming for, sort of a bit of duffle coat, bit of shortened trench coat, bit of blazer, bit of cowboy. It also doesn't sit well on the model.
But meh, if you like it op then go for it. Wool is a bugger if it gets wet though, tends to smell of damp dog and takes forever to dry. Good for chilly dry autumn days though.

MoaningMaude · 13/10/2022 10:42

I hate the big pockets on the front, they make it look like sad droopy boobs and the tassels just no.

CoffeeIsForClosers · 13/10/2022 10:57

Nice highish wool content, but I'm not a fan. I don't like jackets that are trying to look like shirts as well. And a belt too. Not for me.

Don't hate it, though, certainly wouldn't think anything at all if I saw someone wearing it.

Prefer something like this

CoffeeIsForClosers · 13/10/2022 11:01

Ooh or this - still shirty but bit less going on

I really dislike it. It has fringing across the back and down the sleeves! That's a big no. It's too aging 70s rocker for me. Looks like something you'd get off a market for £15.

Sorry but that's awful.

Hardly rude 🤣 just looks like the sort of thing my mum's mates wear. No different from saying 'mum coat' or 'teen coat' or whatever. You need to work on your self esteem, it was an opinion not a personal attack.

"nanna coat' is silly and unhelpful. It's suggesting there is some sort of style applicable to grandmothers.

Your explanation doesn't make it better- no one on here has a clue what your mother's mates wear

arunde · 13/10/2022 13:01

I like it OP and would wear it myself (and I'm in late 20s and follow fashion if that makes any difference). Tassels are very much in trend. The shape and length is also quite current, unlike those "classic" fitted knee-length coats (someone has posted a picture above) that look very outdated.

With a good, modern-style coat, it should be roomy enough to be able to wear a thick jumper underneath (even if you're not planning on wearing jumpers/layers) without the coat feeling tight. That doesn't mean that it should be oversized, just roomy enough for you to wear some layers and be able to breathe and lift your arms up.

Your coat seems to be to be ticking the boxes - as long as the material is good quality and the coat is lined. I do agree with some PP's that tassels, belt and the pocket on the front can make it more difficult to style it/pair with other clothes, but that's not what you asked 😊

EerilyDevilled · 13/10/2022 13:02

I don't like it at all, the breast pockets are going to be unflattering, the tie belt looks messy and together with the pockets the front looks too fussy. The tassels don't work with the rest of it at all and make it look cheap.

arunde · 13/10/2022 13:03

And even if it's not fashionable - so what? Who cares? If you like it, wear it!

Good point about being roomy enough to wear something other than just a shirt or dress underneath. The Karen Millen coat looks tight- it might be ok putting over a dress on a night out but there's not room for anything else.

I'll take your word re tassels being on trend (although they're still not for me)

Sorry but that's awful.

Thanks for your input, I'll be sure and check with you before I order anything 😆

awomanofthecuntytype · 13/10/2022 13:19

If you love it, OP, then ignore your DD. My18 yo DD has opinions about my clothes. She is quite often right, and has saved me from many a fashion disaster.

I couldn't cope with the tassels myself - but again, it's your money and your choice.

I would pay (and have paid) that sort of amount for coats, but I wouldn't pay that much for one that included artificial fibre - but that's probably just me.

cushioncovers · 13/10/2022 13:35

It's dowdy. I don't like it

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 13/10/2022 13:38

Not very exciting for £259! It's a bit of a nothing coat tbh.

TenoringBehind · 13/10/2022 13:54

If you love it that’s all that matters.

midsomermurderess · 13/10/2022 14:22

I think that's elegant, understated and elegant. I'd not be steered by a teenager.

midsomermurderess · 13/10/2022 14:29

The other suggestions are either dull or astonishingly ugly.

Cantonet · 13/10/2022 17:09

I love it & the tassels are gorgeous & subtly done.

Luckingfovely · 13/10/2022 17:28

Meh from the front, but inoffensive.

The tassels though are about the most hideous thing I've ever seen on a coat. Laugh-out-loudable. I'm gobsmacked that anyone could like it.

There's nothing subtle about the tassels.

cushioncovers · 13/10/2022 18:07

Good grief I've just saw the price of it.

Mollysocks · 13/10/2022 19:23

I like it , it looks minimal and classy and would go with everything - and to be honest (no offence to your DD) but I’ve seen what teenage girls are wearing and it’s all oversized shapeless 90s throw backs so I really wouldn’t pay attention to what a teen thought of my clothes.

MrsGhandi · 13/10/2022 19:26

It's a shacket from the front and a Western from the back. It can't make up it's mind. Too expensive for that tomfoolery.
