Jeans - is boyfriend the current default?

Inspired by the current thread about emerging from being a frump… There was a lot of chat about keeping your classics current and skinny jeans not being current now. What do you stylish ladies think is the current default jeans cut, boyfriend?👖👖👖

“Mom jeans”

BananaGrana · 09/10/2022 22:21

I don’t think it’s Mom jeans. The style that seems most modern to me is straight leg or slightly wider, long over the shoe almost touching the ground at the heel. I don’t have any like this and want some!

CampervanKween · 09/10/2022 22:22

Yes definitely almost flares. Or 80s style baggy jeans.

Iamthewombat · 09/10/2022 22:23

Yes, the boyfriend style is what I’m seeing out and about, on stylish women.

Wide leg

I think I know what you mean and that’s definitely what my teenage niece and her friends wear. Most women I know my age (early 30s) are wearing this sort of thing though, hence the mom jeans reply. Maybe we’re not fashionable though!

This type of jean, with converse is around a lot and I think close to what PPs might mean when they refer to wider/longer jeans. But that’s quite a jump from skinnies! I’d say what’s great at the mo is there’s loads of variety - maybe straight/slim wouldn’t be too different from skinnies if that’s what you’ve been wearing. Equally lots of mom, boyfriend, girlfriend and barrel leg jeans around. Any look current IMO!

TheOGCCL · 09/10/2022 23:01

Skinnies have been ubiquitous for 15 years or so, so effectively now any kind of baggier fit looks more on trend. Since skinnies haven’t actually gone anywhere either, for the first time in a long time there’s a real choice and variety in jeans shapes which is good for everyone.

WonderingWhatNow · 09/10/2022 23:06

I’m still in my skinnies, I really need to move on.
Skinny jeans are great for nights out and glam looks though, don’t feel baggy ones will work the same.

Bluebonnet3 · 09/10/2022 23:15

The good thing about there being so many types of jeans out there is you should be able to find at least one or two that suit your shape. Not everyone can pull off all the styles. I look really frumpy in the boyfriend and mom jeans, but straight cut, wide leg, and bootcut all work for me. Find the cut that suits you then add more current/trendy tops and accessories if you like.

LadyAstor · 10/10/2022 00:39

I think slim leg, straight or bootcut look good on most women. Ive only seen teenagers wearing flares and skinnies recently.

toomanyflapjacks · 10/10/2022 09:04

Zara, Mango and H&M had loads of skinnies at the weekend, so I'm not sure they've entirely had their day!

I'm always curious about the references to what teenagers are wearing on here, as though they're the gold standard - most of the teens I see around are in leggings or jogging bottoms! They have youth on their side and look lovely in their own way, but they're not exactly style icons.

dontgobaconmyheart · 10/10/2022 09:46

As a 35 year old, what a teenager is wearing isn't of massive interest to me- totally different lifestyle, body type etc.

As a point of interest my lovely 16 year old niece only wears skinny jeans, whereas I haven't in a few years now and no longer own any, but am considering getting a black pair to tuck into boots for the winter for things like dog walking/general casual wear etc as the wider leg styles just don't work for that and leggings aren't warm enough.

day to day I tend to wear a slim straight leg, or wide leg that's fitted at the top. Baggier on the leg doesn't really suit me.

2pinkginsplease · 10/10/2022 09:49

I’m still wearing my skinnies, I hate baggy trousers, I don’t care if I’m not on trend.

KKslideaway · 10/10/2022 09:50

Agree with @dontgobaconmyheart someone in their 40s trying to dress like a teenager is not a good look. Especially when the styles teenagers are wearing now is what people in their 40s were wearing when they were teenagers. It just makes you look like you've been stuck in a timewarp for the last 25 years.

LookdeepintotheParka · 10/10/2022 15:20

I work with students and seeing them all in wide leg or mom jeans at the moment (other than joggers)

I'm embracing bootcuts, rolled up slim/boyfriend jeans and mini flares this autumn and loving the move away from skinnies at last! Athough less keen on wearing boot cut jeans in the rain!

LadyAstor · 14/10/2022 21:49

God yes! The wet, flapping bootcuts in the rain. Had enough of that in the naughties.

AnnieSnap · 15/10/2022 11:57

I’m not a fan of boyfriend or mum jeans. I just find them a bit frumpy. I like loose straight leg (don’t like wide leg). Irrespective of whether they are on trend, I like bootcut and flared, although mine shrunk in the wash and currently I can’t find find any that I’m happy with.
