Footwear for going out - not heels

FletchingStraight · 08/10/2022 10:51

I'm done with heels, haven't really worn them for years, i have a bad back & wobbly ankles. I do have one pair of kitten heel sock boots that I love but I have them for years & am a bit bored with them & need some alternatives.
I don't have a wild social life just the occasional date night with DH or casual dinner with friends. Usually I'd wear a pair of jeans, pleather skinny trousers or a satin skirt.
Any thoughts?

I never wear heels anymore. They look so dated.

I’ll wear trainers, flatforms, thick soled Chelsea boots, DMs or I’ve just acquired some chunky loafers.

ButteryNuts · 08/10/2022 11:09

Trainers and chunky flat boots.

jeaux90 · 08/10/2022 11:50

I have found a few nice, small wedge ankle boots, or flatforms. Totally over heels too. I really like the flatform trainers around for the comfort and little additional height.

FlippertyGibberts · 08/10/2022 11:58

I'm never going to wear heels again.

I'll wear DMs, other boots, brogues...anything but heels 😄.

FletchingStraight · 08/10/2022 12:25

I generally wear trainers or flatforms in the day, soo comfy.

Guess I'm looking for something different for evening - maybe just need to look at other colours? Trainers are probably not my thing for evening, when going out I do like to look like I've made an effort even if it's just jeans & not sure my head can accept trainers in that mix (I'm 50 so probably a cultural/age thing).

I do have a pair of silver loafers that don't get much wear - think I need ideas of what to pair with as I'm not sure they look quite right with my evening stuff. Maybe I need some cropped jeans/trousers for them?

Any links to nice flatforms? I'm buying these from M&S but was with daytime wear in mind. Hmm do I just actually need to reshape my mindset..?

I'm looking at these at the moment

jeaux90 · 08/10/2022 13:25

I noticed LK Bennett flatform brogue are reduced, they have a navy and white version, but there are quite a few around.

I ordered about 4 pairs of flatform boots and shoes from M&S recently, had to send them all back, really badly sized, made and super heavy.

FinallyHere · 08/10/2022 13:54

For summer, I have a pair of a flat toe thong style Sanford in gold which go with everything. I have been keeping an eye out for a replacement with not very much success.

No ideas (yet) for winter inspiration.

TheOGCCL · 08/10/2022 14:13

I know what you mean. Occasionally you want to dress up a bit more, trainers or other flat shoes can be a bit samey if you wear them all the time.

I would maybe look for some metallic flats, maybe pointed, could have a small heel. Metallic tends to add a going out vibe. I have some gold shoes from La Redoute which can be added to most outfits to step things up a bit.

WeeM · 08/10/2022 14:14

I’m a fan of chunky Chelsea boots these days for going out. Or in the summer I have a pair of chunky wooden soled sandals that I love.

FletchingStraight · 08/10/2022 14:38

@TheOGCCL exactly! I want to look different than daytime - which is pretty much jeans - & not just because I have a nice top on.

I think my silver brogues may work just need the right trousers. Will have a look at flats, added complication of wide feet so will need a strap to ensure they stay on as I often have to size up.

I'm going out tonight in navy wide leg trousers with white puma trainers. Cocktails and restaurant.

So delighted I don't feel I have to wear heels ever again.

FletchingStraight · 08/10/2022 14:40

@jeaux90 oh dear, I thought M&S had upped their game. These look great so it'll be a shame if they're rubbish irl

OP posts:
FletchingStraight · 08/10/2022 14:43

@Dogsgottabone does sound like a lovely outfit. I'm only 5'3" so feel like wide leg trousers swamp me. Maybe I haven't found the right fit yet, but I still don't think I'd get my head around the trainer thing!
I'm horribly resistant to change 😆

RosesAndHellebores · 08/10/2022 14:45

I think wide leg trousers do need something chunky but with a skirt I still like a low heeled court shoe/ballerina but I am old. I like Bobbies which are a bit different and Jones usually have a reasonable selection.

Dogsgottabone · 08/10/2022 14:46

@FletchingStraight i know what you mean, but I've come to the conclusion that people don't really notice or care, they are looking at your face. It took me 44 yrs to realise this.

What's even better is I started a a new job and it became apparent during the first week that at least 1/3 of the female staff wear trainers to work.
It felt like I'd landed in my happy place.

My bag of proper work shoes is staying in the car just in case and I wear trainers every day!

greektreacle · 08/10/2022 14:49

Nicholas Kirkwood. Not cheap BUT really comfy and they last nicely. I have two pairs, one from 2014 and one from 2016 and they both still look great and feel comfortable.

FletchingStraight · 08/10/2022 14:51

@Dogsgottabone agree about others not noticing or caring, plus it's dinner so my feet are under the table anyway.
I'm old enough to not be bothered about others, it's more whether I feel put together or the outfit feels wrong. Trainers I wear all day every day or chunky boots in winter but in the evening I like a softer look which these don't quite fit into in my minds eye.
Think it's brilliant that we don't need to wear (mostly) uncomfortable shoes for work just to appear 'professional' anymore.

Ah sorry 😭😭😭 cost per wear is probs into the pennies here BUT they weren't bought in a cost of living crisis and it's a good job they've lasted because I'm not sure I can flounce into Selfridges for a new pair anytime soon.

I'm also a big fan of campers but they're maybe a bit casual overall I guess?

Imtoooldforallthis · 08/10/2022 14:59

A lady came into the shop were I work wearing these worn casually with skinny Jeans looking fabulous and so I got some, and they are really comfy.
