Are diamonds ageing?

Hello,

I bought myself (lab grown) diamond earrings and a pendant for Christmas (might as well, no one else will!!). I'm tempted to buy a ring also.....however, I'm wondering if diamonds (lab grown or otherwise) have had their day.

Is it aging to have jewelry dripping from your fingers? Have we all moved on from unnecessary trinkets?

I’ve been wondering that as well. They seem gaudy these days. I don’t even wear my engagement ring anymore.

TabithaTittlemouse · 07/10/2022 11:26

Surely it depends on the piece, how it’s worn and the person wearing it. A massive diamond with a tracksuit might look a bit bizarre but an understated diamond styled with a nice outfit wouldn’t be dated?

Purpleavocado · 07/10/2022 11:28

Really? I never thought that. I have my engagement ring on my left hand, my Mum's engagement ring on my right and a small diamond pendant.
I have to wear the rings for insurance purposes - if you have your rings named on your policy you have either have to wear them or have them in a safe.
I wouldn't worry about what's in fashion from moment to moment, it changes so often anyway

JackieDaws · 07/10/2022 11:29

Lmao. As a rule, I wear about 3 rings on each finger. Mixed metals and stones at that. I bought this stuff and I'm sure as hell everyone is going to see it.

My new favourite set is some stacking rings from Shaun Leane. They've got black pearls inset and look great beside my skull rings.

TastesLikeFlavourlessFizz · 07/10/2022 11:30

Diamonds are ageless and timeless, IMO.

AuntSalli · 07/10/2022 11:30

If anybody would like to send me some I’m happy to test the theory and let you make your own decisions based on photographs etc if I can keep the diamonds.

toddlingtortoise · 07/10/2022 11:31

Absolutely not. I’m all for diamonds. Happy to accept any large rocks anyone is offering,

BlackSwan · 07/10/2022 11:48

Holly Golightly says diamonds are tacky if you're under 40. Not a problem for me...

Ridiculous!

No, diamonds are not ageing, they're not gaudy unless the design is gaudy.

Wear what you like. Never ever ask for style advice on mumsnet

I've been wearing diamond studs and pendant for 20 plus years. I couldn't care less what anyone thinks let alone people I don't know.

Suzi888 · 07/10/2022 12:28

I hope not, but I don’t care if they are I won’t be parting with mine! Not that they’re dropping me from every finger 😂.

MarisPiper92 · 07/10/2022 12:34

@BlackSwan I came on to say this too.

NatMoz · 07/10/2022 12:57

I have my engagement ring solitaire diamond, on one hand and my wedding ring with another art deco sapphire and diamonds ring on my other hand. I'm 33 and wear what pleases me.

I don't have diamond earrings or necklaces but if i did I'd wear them too!

Shinyandnew1 · 07/10/2022 13:00

Some very interesting language there! Define ‘dripping from’!

I wear a platinum solitaire engagement ring. I wouldn’t say that was ‘dripping’. If someone has a diamond on every finger, that is something different entirely.

WowStarsWow · 07/10/2022 14:20

How can wearing a diamond engagement ring be ageing or dated?
I mean, chunky jewellery is more in style now than delicate, so diamond studs aren’t going to look trendy, but that doesn’t mean they look dated or (horror) make you look old. Diamonds themselves never go out of fashion, the pieces may do.

No diamonds are not ageing. They are classic and elegant. I think the setting or the choice of metal can be ageing… but never the diamonds themselves

AsAnyFuleKno · 07/10/2022 18:44

I think they are a classic. The only caution would be, with synthetic ones, you might look 'blingy' if they are too large or numerous. Of course, if you are aiming for a blingy look, that's no problem, but if you want to look understated don't wear faux ones that are bigger than the average bod would be able to afford if buying mined ones.

Roselilly36 · 07/10/2022 18:46

Classic and timeless.

NiqueNique · 07/10/2022 18:51

No it’s not ageing. And further, ageing isn’t some horrid thing that must be avoided at all costs.

Twattergy · 07/10/2022 18:52

They aren't fashionable currently. But I wouldnt say they are aging. I'm lucky to have inherited some diamond jewellery that there is no way I could afford and when I wear them I feel classy not aged!

Loachworks · 07/10/2022 18:53

I don't like lots of rings on each hand, even if they're worth a fortune they look cheap. I have delicate hands with long thin fingers (size i.) My engagement and wedding ring would look awful if they were massive gaudy affairs. I'd choose my simple solitaire any day, whether it's seen as cool or not.

Everydaywheniwakeup · 07/10/2022 18:55

When married, I never had a problem wearing my eternity ring, but my diamond studs have always made me feel like a little girl wearing mummy's jewellery. I'm nearly 50 and still only wear them if I want to look m

Everydaywheniwakeup · 07/10/2022 18:56

More formal or feel more grown up.

AdelaideRo · 07/10/2022 19:23

I've been coveting diamond stud earrings for about a decade.

Finally got them and proudly wearing them.

Mine are very simple and smaller than I thought I would buy as I didn't want them to look super-bling. I think it's 0.7carat across both ears.
