Are diamonds ageing?

Hello,

I bought myself (lab grown) diamond earrings and a pendant for Christmas (might as well, no one else will!!). I'm tempted to buy a ring also.....however, I'm wondering if diamonds (lab grown or otherwise) have had their day.

Is it aging to have jewelry dripping from your fingers? Have we all moved on from unnecessary trinkets?

Ridiculous!

No, diamonds are not ageing, they're not gaudy unless the design is gaudy.

Wear what you like. Never ever ask for style advice on mumsnet

I didn’t ask, Robert.

Not in my book
I love my diamonds - it’s taken me years to build up my collection and I wear them frequently

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 07/10/2022 20:58

No diamonds before dark, except for engagement ring, if you care for rules. I generally agree - I can’t get on with daytime diamonds.

Shirley Bassey could tell you

LaurieFairyCake · 07/10/2022 21:02

No diamonds before dark apart from engagement ring Confused

What about eternity ring ?

If I didn't wear my diamonds during the day I'd never wear them - I don't go out at night anymore Grin

Um, talking about tasteful ... Hmm

Appleblum · 08/10/2022 01:33

Diamonds are classic. I personally think they can be a bit ageing when you choose the bigger stones. But it doesn't matter, I will always love the sparkle of a diamond.

LightDrizzle · 08/10/2022 01:38

I don’t think they are ageing unless the style is very dated.

Having said that, I do love a grand, properly old lady rocking serious rocks on her old lady hands with a fabulous brooch for good measure. If it’s a gemstone insect then I’m in heaven.

LondonQueen · 08/10/2022 01:38

I like jewellery but too much is definitely aging. When I'm all dressed up I have my Cartier bracelet, necklace and earrings on, say to day I keep the bracelet only.

Brokendaughter · 08/10/2022 02:06

For me, it's pearls in the day & diamonds after dusk.

Engagement rings or eternity rings are fine all day or night if they have diamonds, but no other jewellery with diamonds.

That's what I was taught as a child.

Mislou · 08/10/2022 02:25

i think they are ‘ ageing ‘ not as in make you look older than you are but that they’re ‘ classic ‘ / conservative which is probably not what young women are trying to go for. If you like them wear them .

When we're those "rules" made in Victorian times? It's great not caring about such trivia.

SpidersAreShitheads · 08/10/2022 05:01

Maybe take a look at the "rings" thread in trending. Pages of very big and blingy diamond engagement rings, as well as some more modest diamond rings too.

If that thread is anything to go by, diamonds most definitely have not had their day!

Interesting read, but I'm common and my diamond studs and pendant could never be described as "flashy". I guess it makes more sense if you have diamonds worth a huge amount. Anyway who cares?

Can you please clarify what you mean exactly by 'gypsyish'?

ShandaLear · 08/10/2022 05:13

No, not at all. They’re timeless, ageless, practical (impossible to scratch) and versatile. I have a discreet diamond necklace that I always think makes any outfit look better.

mdinbc · 08/10/2022 05:24

It's not the stones themselves that are aging, it is the style of the jewelry. You can have something re-made into a more modern setting.

Wearing a row of diamond studs in one ear to me is a bit aging (especially when they are grubby), it will match the butterfly tattoo on your ankle. Everything has its time.

eltonjohnsglasses · 08/10/2022 05:30

It really depends on the styling. Some styling can look ageing but that's the style of jewellery & what you wear it with.

Vecnussy · 08/10/2022 06:58

I am a small hobby jewellery maker and can assure you that diamond and precious stone jewellery is definitely not out of style. The setting styles, choice of metals and preferred carat have changed though. Much more understated at the moment as apposed to say 10-15 years ago when everything was 'bigger the better'.

I might get shot down for this

And rightly so. Racism is unacceptable.

A bit gypsyish ? What?

Maireas · 08/10/2022 07:05

Well. I think it's all covered on this thread, isn't it? I expected ageism, but the rest?
Wear what you want to, we're all different. Life's tough enough without being judged on your earrings and rings.

edgeware · 08/10/2022 07:05

Definitely not ageing. And also, diamonds and gold are endlessly recycled (you don’t ever throw it away, do you?) whic is rare these days.

AdelaideRo · 07/10/2022 19:23

I've been coveting diamond stud earrings for about a decade.

Finally got them and proudly wearing them.

Mine are very simple and smaller than I thought I would buy as I didn't want them to look super-bling. I think it's 0.7carat across both ears.

I am currently lusting after diamond studs too - I am going to go looking.
I have just had a second ear piercing (lobe) so think they will look great.. just got to save up!

JM10 · 08/10/2022 20:58

I don't care if anyone thinks diamonds are ageing, I love them. My diamond eternity ring often makes me smile, I was devastated to lose one of my diamond studs and I covet a diamond tennis bracelet. I will wear in before dark as well, because I am a rebel 😂
