What’s the most you would spend on a jumper?

I was looking for some new knitwear on Next online as they do lots of different brands. I saw two I liked, one from All Saints at £139 and one from Reiss at £178. I would never pay that for a jumper! Plus they were hand wash which also puts me off as I never hand wash anything these days.

£40-£45 would be about my price range. Does anyone pay that much as the norm? Is the quality much different at that price?

I love clothes and fashion but trying not to spend too much this year for obvious reasons but want to get a few things for the winter which are practical and warm and will update my wardrobe a bit.

My comfort zone is around £50, I prefer cotton, but I’ve gone as high as £100 a couple of times for merino.

SarahWoodruff · 02/10/2022 19:50

I'm impressed by the sang-froid of posters with £££ jumpers. I'd spill tomato sauce on one of those instantly.

OrangePomander · 02/10/2022 19:50

Just to add I find the merino a pita because of hand washing so wear them less often, so not a good investment!

Idlechitchat · 02/10/2022 19:53

£30 would be the most I’d spend, but only if I really liked it.

I'm with you. A jumper can so easily get ruined (vs bag, trousers, shoes etc) and I don't want to be too scared to wear / enjoy something

JaneJeffer · 02/10/2022 19:57

€30 tops. Wool is itchy anyway and cashmere is cruel to the goats who then freeze during the winter.

LynetteScavo · 02/10/2022 19:58

I tend to buy jumpers in sales or in TK Max. I often destroy jumpers, or lose them because I take them off and leave them somewhere - even though I try to be careful. I'll happily spend £35 in Uniqlo or H&M. DD wanted to spend £85 recently and I told her that was ridiculous.

I lust after more expensive ones from Navy Grey, I can't justify the cost though.

Has anyone seen something like this but ideally no more than about £50?

Ignore me, I meant to start a new thread. Sorry OP

I bought a really quirky bamboo jumper last winter, and it was £90.

Within 3 wears, it looked 20 years old and DH actually looked at it in horror saying where had I dug that up from....... I complained and got sent another, which did the exact same. All the reviews said exactly the same.

DSGR · 02/10/2022 20:19

£100-£130 for wool jumpers and cashmere. I wash there on cold in the machine on a wool wash. Most last years and I don’t keep them “for best” as they are warm and cosy staples. M&S cashmere is also really decent for the price

Depends what it’s made of.

So much of the cheaper end of knitwear in high street shops is made of acrylic, I’ve learned over the years that this is a false economy as it bobbles and goes shapeless as soon as I wash it.

Yes, agreed, what is the point? It looks so soft and lovely then it's a bobby mess.

RiverSkater · 02/10/2022 20:31

Some chenille can look lovely.

Angelicapickles1 · 02/10/2022 20:36

£100 for a classic quality jumper I can wear for years

Anything slightly fashiony I spend max £40 on as I know I will go off it next year

Pigtailsandall · 02/10/2022 20:37

Up to £100. However, I stalk what I want online and buy it in sales. Theres a definite difference in better knitwear and acrylic/polyester crap. Plus man made materials are actually quite cold when it really comes to it!

Moths are the bain of my existence

Every jumper i have ever bought cheap or expensive bobbles if i so much as look at it and then i feel scruffy so dont wear it. Particularly around the boobs and under the arms.

This means i stick to sweatshirts which is a shame as i see other people in knitwear and think they look so chic!

So a result i wouldnt pay a lot for one as i would be devastated if it bobbled!

Most of them do irrespective of how much they cost. I am a bit naughty and use my husband's spare shaver to remove the pilling. It works really well. You can get special depilling combs but the shaver works for me!

WeneedSamVimesonthecase · 02/10/2022 20:40

£60, maybe? I actually own a lot of cashmere jumpers, but I mostly buy them secondhand

lindyloo57 · 02/10/2022 20:44

I only buy cashmere in the sale, I don't wear acrylic anymore, can't stand the bobbling, I have only worn my new cashmere jumper twice, from John Lewis and noticed it has bobble under the arms , so wondering if the quality has gone down hill.

SocksAndTheCity · 02/10/2022 21:02

My most expensive jumper is an Isabel Marant one that was £330, but I wear it so much the cost per wear will be pretty low. I also have a Genevieve Sweeney one which I love but it barely got cold enough to wear it much last winter which was a shame.

My current favourite is this one from the Meadham Kirchoff TopShop collaboration in 2013, which I picked up on Depop for £15 😀. Also love Christopher Kane @HundredMilesAnHour

CoffeeIsForClosers · 02/10/2022 21:03

I have three that were in the £300-£400 range, all cashmere. The most pricey would have been a thick cashmere Brora hoody that was reduced (!) to £390ish from £500ish (I think). It's absolutely lush. Thick and soft and the colour is stunning. It's also huge as I bought it oversized to get more bang for my buck.

I also have several in the £100-£200 range in wool. Two are Donegal coatigans from Celtic and Co. I live in them all winter, they're so worth the money.

Like a PP, I don't keep anything for best. I bought them to wear them and I actively enjoy wearing them. Haven't got any other expensive habits. I'm lucky to receive quite a lot of cash for my birthday and Christmas, so I treat myself with some of it and save the rest.

I do take things off and throw on an old fleece if I'm sitting down to eat something potentially messy Grin

Me too looks lovely for a morning and then bobbly forever more. Weirdly mens merino wool jumpers from M and S seem to be immune to the bobbly armpit curse. A bit shapeless but lovely and warm!

Snugglemonkey · 02/10/2022 21:11

I do spend money for quality knitwear. I like Eribe and Aran knits and they are pricey. They last years though. I have had some for about 15! I handwash.

washingbasketqueen · 02/10/2022 21:25

About £30. I'm not massively into jumpers though. I do spend on coats and boots though.

deedledeedledum · 02/10/2022 21:42

This is kind of a pointless question. Someone who buys top end clothes might spend £2000 on a Loro Piana cashmere sweater. Someone else who never buys new might spend £15 🤷🏻‍♀️
