What’s the most you would spend on a jumper?

I was looking for some new knitwear on Next online as they do lots of different brands. I saw two I liked, one from All Saints at £139 and one from Reiss at £178. I would never pay that for a jumper! Plus they were hand wash which also puts me off as I never hand wash anything these days.

£40-£45 would be about my price range. Does anyone pay that much as the norm? Is the quality much different at that price?

I love clothes and fashion but trying not to spend too much this year for obvious reasons but want to get a few things for the winter which are practical and warm and will update my wardrobe a bit.

£50 max.

user16480478 · 02/10/2022 18:23

I get mine in the sales also as it isn't something that dates

J0y · 02/10/2022 18:28

About 80 euro, we'll I bought a jumper for that last year. Going to try not to buy any new jumpers this year.

Last year there were some gorgeous jumpers linked here, over 150 stg but I haven't got that much spare cash.

Oatsamazing · 02/10/2022 18:28

£30 if it was really nice, generally don't buy jumpers though as they don't last well for me

hattie43 · 02/10/2022 18:29

I love Celtic & Co jumpers and they are usually £100 - £120 ish

movingsky · 02/10/2022 18:29

£150 ish, I like Harley of Scotland and The Croft House for Scottish knits in British wool.

I always wear a t shirt under my wool knits and don't wash them that often.

OldTinHat · 02/10/2022 18:30

I've bought a new orange hooded jumper from Sainsburys for £15, a cream v-neck cotton from a charity shop for £3 (sale rail, no bobbles or pulls!) and a cardigan type jumper that's worn done up with a vest under for £5, again charity shop.

I'm going on my first holiday in 7yrs shortly so I'm splashing out on new tops!

Tootels · 02/10/2022 18:30

£30 ish

garlicandsapphires · 02/10/2022 18:30

I would and have paid quite a lot for jumpers, if I know I’ll wear it a lot. I’m a bit believer in pay-per-wear

Devo1818 · 02/10/2022 18:33

£69 if it was wonderful.

Ulysses · 02/10/2022 18:33

I bought a cashmere hoodie from Reiss for £200+ with Xmas money then a couple of days later it was half price in the John Lewis. It’s my most worn item of clothing to be fair but a bit of a stinger.

Backtonormalnow · 02/10/2022 18:35

Good point about sales. I’ll keep an eye out.

It would depend on what it’s made of. I’m trying to buy mostly natural materials and have charity shopped any that were acrylic. For thin merino polo necks or cotton jumpers I’d pay £30-40 but ones with cashmere, £100+. I was looking at a couple of Celtic & Co last night that are £120ish.

CountryCousin · 02/10/2022 19:03

Oh. Are you really not willing to say what sort of fabric you usually buy? I was genuinely curious.

TheOnlyBeeInYourBonnet · 02/10/2022 19:11

I buy either merino or cashmere from Uniqlo.

Merino is usually 25-30 pounds, never bobbles, washes well in the machine on delicates cycle, lasts years.

The cashmere is 60-70 pounds, I bought a cheapy de-bobbling tool from Amazon to keep them looking nice and again they last forever. Always wear something under and they may get washed once or twice per season, again in the gentle cycle of the machine with wool wash.

Pineappleflowers · 02/10/2022 19:12

£85 if I looked amazing in it and thought itnwould last for years.

£40/65 more usual

Riverlee · 02/10/2022 19:15

£60 - Whitestuff jumper in the sale. Would love a Celtic and co jumper though.

pandy2 · 02/10/2022 19:24

Whatever you spend has to be done whatever you're prepared to lose. Jumpers are crap for going bobbly / out of shape / shrinking even when you look after them so I wouldn't want to be fretting about £20/£100/200 wasted unless I could easily afford to jettison that amount. I think £50 is my price point given they never last.

HundredMilesAnHour · 02/10/2022 19:29

I love a jumper. I buy them for life rather than a season or two. So I try to buy cashmere where possible and never buy manmade fibres (unless it's a weird one-off). I wait for sales and then buy good quality jumpers and I really look after them. Store them carefully, always wash by hand and rotate them so they don't get too worn. I tend to buy classic but I also have some quite edgy jumpers by Christopher Kane (so edgy rather than fashionable) that get a lot of compliments (and are amazing quality so feel wonderful on too).

I usually spend £100-£200 per jumper although on Friday I bought a 100% cashmere chunky black poloneck poncho from Joseph for £250 in a sale (retail price was over £600).

mathanxiety · 02/10/2022 19:34

I took DD3 (24) out to buy a jumper yesterday. She tried on a few at Gap. We went to a thrift on the way home empty handed. She came away with two lovely Banana Republic jumpers at $6.99 apiece plus a nice small leather handbag and three books for under the price of the jumper at Gap.

My top price is $6.99 therefore.

Luredbyapomegranate · 02/10/2022 19:37

I’d pay 100 - 130 for a wool or cotton one. Tend to go for cotton as easier to look after.

I have some 4O quid sweatshirty ones which are fine, but I find cheap wool or cotton knit jumpers don’t last.

AuntSalli · 02/10/2022 19:38

I have some Reiss clothes from 15 years ago that still look absolutely brand-new they’re immaculate and a dress that I bought a year ago that looks like a dish rag.

if I was gonna spend that amount of money on a jumper which I have done I would go to sheep Inc, The quality and it is beautiful but it’s not fashionable it’s very much a Classic i.e. boring

SpinMeRightRoundBabyRightRound · 02/10/2022 19:40

I knit and the most I’ve ever spent for one item was about £80 on Jaimieson’s of Shetland wool for this jumper, though I had a discount code so it was cheaper than it should have been
www.instagram.com/p/CR8yDaRLlwK/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=

I’ve done some sample knitting and the received cashmere/merino yarn in exchange which worked out well for me as it would have been over £200 to buy.

LimpBiskit · 02/10/2022 19:45

£25 but I'm a tight arse. I get a lot of my clothes from charity shops for a lot less.

Smilelesstalkmore · 02/10/2022 19:46

I buy almost everything on Vinted now and it has completely skewed my sense of how much clothes should cost, so the absolute most I would spend now would be about 20 quid and I would think that was pricey! 🤣
