Do clothes shrink in storage?

Anyone else found this?

I'm still the same size and I've actually lost a little bit of weight compared to last year.

However the clothes I'm getting out of storage (plastic boxes in attic) are feeling tight and like they've shrunk.

Is that a thing? I've never noticed this before!

That’s so funny. I noticed the same thing and spent ages googling to see if it is a thing. Couldn’t see any evidence to support so assume that, even though I am the same weight, the weight has moved around in a menopausey way to make my clothes tight in new places!

CollieWobble22 · 27/09/2022 21:52

@JustforToast I KNEW IT! It must be true.

And how did I make it to 35 before noticing?? I also pondered whether my body shape has changed but I honestly don't think so!

My clothes shrink regularly.

Definitely not cake related.

No, clothes don't magically shrink in storage 🤪 maybe your body shape has changed. Fashions change too, looser clothes are more popular now so maybe you're more used to wearing looser clothes

Fullsomefrenchie · 27/09/2022 23:02

Yes absolutely they do. Go into any vintage shop and behold the tiny borrower type clothes.😝

TheWideningGyre · 27/09/2022 23:52

Clothes don't shrink.

Bodies chage though!

Interestingly I took a couple of skirts I hadn't worn for 10ish years out today and looked at them with new eyes, tried them on and they were both a little looser around the waist if anything.

They were both a size 10, and I'm sure I've thickened around the waist, but maybe I haven't.

They weren't elasticated.

Maybe clothes grow in storage...

🤣🤣🤣

Reminds me of The Marvellous Mrs Maisel where she measures her hips, waist, thighs and bust each morning

i clearly need to do that 😂.

I had clothes in storage for nearly 20 years when we lived overseas...I can assure you they DO NOT shrink. 😂

Fraaahnces · 28/09/2022 11:07

Did you put them in vacuum-sealed bags? They might just need to be washed and hung up to stretch back into place.

nuttynotty · 29/09/2022 13:38

This is so sweet if you genuinely thought clothes shrunk in storage Smile but sorry, no.

Cotten etc does get more brittle with age so it's possible there's just not as much give.
We are used to comfy clothes thanks to covid so maybe your just not used to non-stretchy fabrics.

Even if you haven't put in weight, most of us naturally lose muscle as we age and gain fat, even if we stay the same weight.

Not only do mine shrink, they also change from the understated yet chic capsule collection I recall from last year, to a greyish shirt, some trousers with a broken zip, a dress that takes me from day to evening looking consistently rubbish, and a couple of bobbly cardis.

Unfortunately i had this debate with myself a few yrs ago and even my DP insisted the clothes probably shrunk, asshole. I had absolutely gained weight.

I have stuff from the 90's in there, it is still the same size. If clothes shrunk in storage my 1999 flared jeans would be minuscule by now.

The scales are useless, too shifting, don't really give a clear picture. I have always been able to tell if my shape has changed by how my clothes fit. Especially jeans and fitted tops. I don't say this to be dismissive, it's just that the day I finally figured this out i felt sane again! I had absolutely piled on a stone, regardless the incremental ups and downs of the scale. When the weight came off normally after the pandemic, suddenly my clothes weren't shrunk anymore.

MarshaMelrose · 30/09/2022 03:30

I have to say, mine generally don't but strangely they did during their covid storage.
