Please help me style this dress for a wedding

Hello you very stylish lot!
I'm going to a wedding in Scotland in early November, meeting some of my partners friends (not family) for the first time. I think it might be quite a posh wedding and I want to get the outfit right. It's at a small cathedral, then a bar/restaurant place for the evening.
I've got this dress for it.
www.asos.com/asos-design/asos-design-lace-insert-pleated-midi-dress-with-embroidery-in-navy/prd/14422346
do you think it's ok?
I'm not usually a dressy person at all, I dress smart ish for work, and the rest of the time is dungarees or pinafore dresses.
I have a chronic pain condition which can sometimes affect my mobility, I should be fine for the wedding but it means I don't own any heels! And I think this dress needs them? but they'll have to be supportive, and not too high. I do like platform heels, but I so rarely go to big occasions so it seems ridiculous to buy proper heels. I was wondering about some snazzy ankle boots, that I could get more wear out of after?
I have a black velvet Boden coat I got from a charity shop which I think will be ok over the top?
I'd appreciate your thoughts on the dresses suitability, and any suggestions for shoes and bag?
I already have a plain silver evening bag which might go?
I like metallics, greens, pinks, bold yellows, floral, embroidery. I know the red is maybe an obvious choice to pick out, but I don't like red so don't want to buy accessories in it.
My budget is low but any advice and inspiration would be much appreciated!
I've attached some pics of me in it. Yes I do need to buy a new bra!
I'm off out today but will return tonight or tomorrow morning!
Thank you 😊

These are lovely and so affordable! Thank you so much. I'm a size 7 shoe.

That dress is absolutely lovely and it suits you. It actually looks better on you than the model.

I would wear navy tights, definitely not flesh coloured ones. If the dress is a bit see through as a previous poster says I would wear a ‘’body’ or black Spanx over the tights. But I don’t have much body confidence.

Whataretheodds · 24/09/2022 21:52

Chunky ankle boots ideal because easy to wear cushioned socks with them. I'd wear navy tights.

Boots don't have to match bag. Metallic more practical than suede for Scottish autumn/winter - spray them with protector 24 hours before wearing.

Would you get your nails painted red and/ red lipstick?

Whataretheodds · 24/09/2022 21:54

On your head i really like this (I've bought from her before)

I love that dress, you look good in it

NewWateringCan · 24/09/2022 22:02

@DickDarstedly that's so kind, thank you! it'll look even better with a decent bra and without the trainer socks!

I'm getting my nails done and I did consider red! But I have nothing else red in my wardrobe so it'd maybe look odd with every other outfit I wear. And I also considered red lipstick, I have Fenty Stunna lip paint in Uncuffed, it's a gorgeous shade, lasts so well, and I think it really suits me, I had thought about getting the red but I don't want to be too dramatic? Maybe the Uncuffed is better as it's more neutral?

I love a headband but unfortunately they don't love me, they make me look like Anne Boleyn!

Uncuffed looks great!

I don't have any red clothes as it doesn't suit my complexion but i like red nails with navy/black/denim/white which i wear a lot, it pops well.

You look beautiful in that dress, but I'm stunned that people are urging you not to wear tights to Scotland in November. Don't worry, your thermal vest will hide the see-through waistline.

DickDarstedly · 25/09/2022 12:57

Agree about not wearing tights. You will be freezing and your legs will be mottled red/white with cold. Not a good look. Navy tights!

Augend23 · 25/09/2022 12:59

I think you'll definitely need tights (and probably some sort of thermal set up) for at least the church part of a Scottish November wedding. Brrr I think it's chilly already!@

NewWateringCan · 16/10/2022 17:03

Hello, I'm back with accessories!
I got a Proper Bra (very usual for me) which definitely helps, and I ordered some silver metallic boots off depop, as i already have a silver metallic bag, and I do them like as boots but I don't know if they look right with the dress?
Appreciate all the advice, especially regarding tights! Did a full try on this morning with black tights which I felt looked a bit weird? I don't own any nude ones but I could buy some.

I'm now debating bags, I have the silver clutch, but someone lent me a silver/pale pink/navy embroided floral bag which I thought maybe went well? Or is it too much?

I think the dress is lovely but neither of the bags really go. As you have a black velvet coat, which sounds lovely, perhaps a small black velvet clutch would be better. Not sure about the boots really. Do you have a pair of long boots that you could wear to the church and then swap them for some sandals for the reception perhaps? You can get some really pretty sandals with low heels. If you got silver sandals you could have a silver bag or black sandals/black bag (I know they don’t have to match but the dress is so gorgeous I think you need low key shoes and bag otherwise you’ll look too busy colour wise).

SollaSollew · 16/10/2022 21:25

Hi @NewWateringCan. I had the same tights/boots dilemma so I've bought some thermal leggings to wear under longer dresses with boots (which I wear with ankle length socks). It still shows the bit of flesh between the bottom of my skirt and top of my boots but keeps my legs warm.

lovescats3 · 20/10/2022 12:23

The dress is lovely and the boots a great idea

tulips27 · 20/10/2022 12:28

A small red bag might work well.

NewWateringCan · 24/10/2022 19:33

Hello everyone, FYI I had a middle of the night freakout, decided I hated the dress, and I now have a dark green velvet slinky number which I much prefer. It's more autumnal, comfier, and warmer! And the boots go! so I'm doing silver boots, bag, and earrings. feel much happier!
thank you all for your advice anyway!

NewWateringCan · 24/10/2022 19:35

Can't see it well in my pic but it's lovely on. I feel much more confident in it and that it's more appropriate.

I LOVE the dress and boots but I think nude tights would work better thank black!

Intelligenthair · 24/10/2022 19:58

MUCH prefer the new dress, excellent choice. You look beautiful.

BatsAtDawn · 24/10/2022 20:04

If you have to wear tights please go with nude coloured ones

BatsAtDawn · 24/10/2022 20:05

Both dresses are gorgeous though, you'll look fantastic in either one

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 24/10/2022 21:15

The second won is fabulous. And you have a lovely smiley face 😀
