Dress shoes for work that aren't heels but still make you look 'polished'

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 21/09/2022 17:20

Looking for some dress shoes to wear to a new office job. Haven't worn anything other than trainers for as long as can recall as current job is creative and casual.
What can I get that will be
a. comfortable
b. look polished and professional
c. make me look ok without heels in an office

I tend to wear nice, polished boots (not quite flats but with a little chunky heel) or brogues. I tend to wear the boots with dresses and the brogues with trousers.

AquaticSewingMachine · 21/09/2022 17:34

Loafers or brogues. Or smart, flat ankle boots.

PutinIsAWarCriminal · 21/09/2022 17:34

I wear flat leather slip on pumps for smart.

I have the same question @SoTiredNeedHoliday.

I need shoes that are smart enough for the office and comfortable enough to walk 10-15 mins from the station.

I think if I go for too thin a sole they might not last as long as I'd like them too.

Otherwise I need to wear trainers and take smart shoes with me.

girlwhowearsglasses · 21/09/2022 17:44

Look at Esska - they do comfy glam metallic booties and shoes with small (and large) heels.

Shoe Embassy do the most glam brogues you can imagine. I can attest they are also v comfortable all day.

AquaticSewingMachine · 21/09/2022 17:47

Something like this loafer would be my little black dress of smart but comfortable flats.

ShandaLear · 21/09/2022 17:52

I have these. Definitely comfortable, stylish, go with everything, and long lasting.

I’ve had these for the last 3 years. Super comfortable and still look as good as new

I came here to ask this exact question!

Can't be doing my with heels any more, but I need something smart.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/09/2022 18:00

I've got black, flat slingbacks from Clarks. They go with most things. I keep them under my desk and travel in trainers.

I also wear ankle boots.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/09/2022 18:01

And brogues - but they only work with trousers and shorter skirts/dresses, not with longer dresses.

soupmaker · 21/09/2022 18:17

OMFG the price of R&B loafers. I've had mine over 10 years and had them on for work today. Still look fab. But think I paid £155 for mine.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 21/09/2022 18:48

thanks all some good suggestions. I had discounted R&B due to price but if the quality is that good then I think its worth the money. @Katrinawaves and @soupmaker I guess 10 years ago £155 was a huge amount then too so seems like a good investment.
I was thinking these air & grace

I'd love to see some boot suggestions too pls

The nice thing about Russell and Bromley is that they will also maintain your shoes. So you can bring them in however old they are for reheeling or resoling and they will
also polish out any scuffing. I only found this out when I was replacing a pair of R and. B boots and mentioned to the sales assistant that I already had a pair and she told me not to buy the new pair but get the old ones restored.

Luana1 · 21/09/2022 19:04

I wear ankle boots from Moshulu which are both smart looking and comfortable.

FelixDoublyDelicious · 21/09/2022 19:08

All so ugly, but I also could not wear any of them. I have terrible trouble with shoes and need some kind of strap as if the front is too low my toes claw to keep them on

I love Mary Jane style and I know they may be too high for you, but for that short walk I could do it easily

Those Next ones are a bit of a leap for somebody who has said she doesn't want heels!

Sorry but I really don't like those Air and Grace ones.

OhMerde · 21/09/2022 19:18

A low block heel. Something like this. Super smart and professional but comfy. These are from LK Bennet. I always found their shoes super comfy.

Or these for flats. Something with a bit of detail and structure www.lkbennett.com/product/FLAURORAPATENTNavyMidnight~-Midnight

BeaLola · 21/09/2022 19:36

Love the LK Bennett ones - sadly I have wide feet

Coffeepot72 · 21/09/2022 19:38

The only flat shoes I feel polished in, are pointy flats which aren’t great for walking far. For many years now I’ve carried a smart pair of shoes to work, and done my walking in trainers.

I did not know that. OP I bought these boots from Russell and Bromley this year, they never go into sale, I waited a couple of years to see if they would and finally went for it this year. Extremely comfortable, flattering and warm. www.russellandbromley.co.uk/half-full/373354 Means you don’t have to wear tights.

I've got some basic M&S leather loafers. Dull but unexceptionable.
