Anyone want to help me find a wedding guest dress?

Just that really! My nephew will be getting married in November. It’s in a castle so I’m guessing as it’s a big space the heating may not be great.

I’ve been looking a the new collections over the last month and just feel completely uninspired! Ive ordered a couple of dresses to try on (2 from Anthropologie, one from Ghost, one from Whistles and one from Omnes) and while I’ve kept one of the Anthropologie dresses, it was more a case of it being the best of a bad lot really. It’s a nice dress but I’m just not 100% sure about it (it’s thin silky material and a shade of green I wouldn’t usually wear - my 14 year old goth inclined daughter said it looked like a nightie!).

So far I’ve looked at Anthropologie, Me&em, Baukjen, Cos, & Other Stories, Reiss, Whistles, Massimo Dutti, Ba&sh, Ted Baker, All Saints, Jigsaw & Karen Millen but nothing is jumping out and hitting me! I’m 5ft8, size 10/12 depending on will power and age 52. Budget up to £300 for the dress (but would prefer to spend £150-250). Won’t be wearing a hat! In terms of my personal style, I like well cut and elegant dresses. I’d be perfectly comfortable wearing black at a wedding but my mother who will be attending has very strong views on women who do! It was also my fathers funeral relatively recently too so I think steering clear of black would be wise.

What length do you prefer? Do you like plain or patterned?

QuebecBagnet · 17/09/2022 15:32

long dress

QuebecBagnet · 17/09/2022 15:37

might be good if cooler

This? Needs a leather belt and your best jewels.

MuddlerInLaw · 17/09/2022 15:59

Love the MaxMara!

Only the size 10 left but their sizing is generous.

Try Maje

What about a cashmere polo and a full-length skirt? It's very classic, can wear good jewellery with the top and you stay warm!

There was a beautiful black watch dress on here earlier this week. Timeless and classic

MuddlerInLaw · 17/09/2022 16:16

Just because … Well over budget but it’s so beautiful.

Personally I would rent a Vampire's Wife. Plenty on Hurr Collective and would suit a winter castle wedding!

If you're worried about being cold, why not try velvet?

Thank you very much all! Yes definitely long or midi. I love the green Vampire’s wife dress and the Wiggy Kit dress is nice too. I have absolutely no waist and relatively big boobs and I’m not sure the MaxMara would do anything for me (though there is a black wrap coat in the current collection that I tried on recently I fell completely in love with and can’t afford. Maybe I should just buy that and nothing else all winter and wear it for all occasions!).

Two more from Net-a-Porter.

The pink would be great with coordinating trousers.

The green is a bit random.

Excellent update!

Vampire’s Wife dresses are lovely but that particular green is a little over-exposed - princesses and celebrities photographed in it.

Show us the black coat!

Whohashiddenthebiscuits · 17/09/2022 17:38

The green in terms of shape and draping is nice, would have to do something with the neckline though (not sure anyone wants to see so much of my middle aged boobs 🙂!).

Not sure about baby pink on me but then maybe I need to get out of my comfort zone.

PS - very much appreciating your suggestions! I had got to a mental dead end with this!

@MuddlerInLaw the coat! Was out shopping on holiday with a very wealthy Canadian friend in their version of Harvey Nicks, her buying stuff, me trying stuff on and wondering where I’d gone wrong with career choices! Style wise it’s not unique but it felt absolutely beautiful:

Gorgeous coat. (MaxMara does have sales, of course, but it’s always the weird colours rather than the camel or black that are reduced.)

Inevitably, since you said ‘not black’ I have seen several gorgeous black dresses in the past hour … Sure you’re not interested?

MuddlerInLaw · 17/09/2022 18:07

Just in case …

Would probably need a not black jacket.

Whohashiddenthebiscuits · 17/09/2022 19:30

@MuddlerInLaw honestly, usually black would be definitely in the mix! Normally I’m not bothered at all about what my mother thinks is appropriate clothing for an occasion or indeed a woman over 40 (I will spare you details, just assume they are very annoying!). But seeing as the last time we were all together as a family group was Dads funeral & all in black, wearing colour is the way to go for this.

Nice jumpsuit though! And definitely something you could wear to a multitude of things unlike most wedding clobber!
