Properly warm but stylish parka/puffer

I’m know I’m being really fussy.

I’m looking for a warm (I live in Scotland but also often go on trips to cold cities in winter) parka or puffer BUT I don’t want one that looks too sporty/outdoorsy. It’s to wear in the city for eg a day of walking around, and something water resistant would be ideal. I just want something which looks more stylish and less like I’m off hiking. Something simple would be fine, just that would go with jeans/boots etc. I know lots of people just wear outdoors brands over regular clothes but I really am not a fan.

I don’t want down either for ethical reasons so I’m struggling to find anything.

I’ve seen plenty of nice styles from high street shops but I’m not convinced they’d be warm enough.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Have a look at Danafae
They're in Denmark, but Gwisk Lowen (a Welsh store) and Funky Little People often do orders and post out to customers. Both owners are happy to be contacted via their website and facebook page.

I haven't got a danafae coat myself, but I've heard good things. I have got a wool dress which is lovely! Other scandi brands are worth looking at.

Thanks SO MUCH for all the replies. Haven’t yet purchased one but got lots of ideas. I think some of the shops mentioned don’t have their winter stock in yet so plenty of places for me to keep an eye on and hopefully get something that ticks all the boxes.

I saw a man wearing a long brown RAINS mac and it was very stylish.
You could layer up inside.

Brandalley have some but you need to join (free) to see things www.brandalley.co.uk

Whereabouts do you travel for work that is so cold? I used to visit Scandinavia a lot for work and ime it's much easier to find stylish but effective winter coats over there than it is here. I have a couple of amazing coats that are as warm and/or waterproof as hiking gear but look like regular "city wear". So maybe try the local shops when you are in your "cold country"? If it's anything like Scandinavia you'd better be prepared for the price tags, though!

Something like this? Padded & warm but not down

It's quite nice but £100 is a lot of money for a polyester outer and polyester filling.

All the insta crowd had a “must have” parka last year but I can’t remember it’s name. This year a lot of them are wearing Didrikson - is it a good brand does anyone know?

Didrickson's are excellent. They are Swedish and started by making foul weather gear for fisherman! They know a bit about staying warm and dry.

barneymcgroo · 09/10/2022 19:13

Didrikson do parkas in red, yellow, orange. They are SERIOUSLY warm (I also live in Scotland. In my Didrikson parka).

TheConicalFlask · 09/10/2022 19:23

Regatta have some nice coats that are warm and waterproof but don't make you look like you're off hiking!
I got a lovely burgundy one with black faux fur around the hood. It pulls in at the waist so I don't loose my shape.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 09/10/2022 19:26

Oh OP. I've spent the day walking round our nearest city trying to find this. The closest I got was this Coat
In Joules. It's a bit more green that the photo, a nice colour. They had it in dark blue too.

It was warm, I got too hot trying it on. The only reason I didn't buy it was the hood was a bit big for me. (was worried it would come over my eyes!)

I have a fake fur lined parka from superdry that is years old, and my most faithful coat. It's warm, showerproof, has decent pockets, has a hood, goes with everything and looks cool (I think) . Their coats are really worth a look.

ladygindiva · 09/10/2022 19:33

The short one I own but I'm now eyeing up the long puffer one as I have a birthday soon

I LOVE this one, just a bit too pricey! 😞

Wheelyweddingwipedout · 09/10/2022 21:02

@ChilliPB - I like the look of this one

AnotherFuckingUsername · 09/10/2022 21:10

Another for Didriksons - they are made to be warm and waterproof - needed in Scotland. Style it up (wool scarf, hat and gloves) as needed. Some also have detachable (fake) fur around hood.

That said, a few years ago I got a Landsend Commuter Coat and it was plainly functional - can wear it with walking boots with the dog or over work clothes.

DameHelena · 10/10/2022 15:41

Try Kari Traa. They have their own website, but it's not a cheap label, so unless you get lucky in the sales I'd recommend instead googling Kari Traa coat and seeing what comes up; a lot of outdoors places have some of their stuff at a discount.

Ickapyre · 10/10/2022 16:20

I haven't seen anyone recommend Ganni outerwear on this thread. You may not get the colours or prints you are after but they have an edgier design and some really good looking parkas/puffers. Scandinavian warmth, functional and are responsible/ethical so no down. Sorry haven't learned to link but they sell through their own website.

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2022 18:38

Are any puffer coat actually waterproof ?
I know the Uniqlo ones I have are not.

Askinvillarblues · 10/10/2022 18:54

Slightly random but try having a look at equestrian brands - Le Mieux, Equetech, Ariat, Aigle etc - warm and waterproof is their thing! I have a lovely full length warm and waterproof coat from equetech that is far too nice to wear to the yard 🤣

Askinvillarblues · 10/10/2022 18:57

I think this is the one I have…might not meet your ‘stylish’ request but it is absolutely warm and waterproof Equetech coat

DailyEnergyCrisis · 10/10/2022 21:14

Hobbs or Boden are worth a look.

ChilliPB · 10/10/2022 22:44

Ah wow what a response! Thanks so much everyone 😊
I ended up getting a coat from Noize after looking for non-down coats - they’re a Canadian brand so specialise in properly warm coats.
This thread has been great for finding out about brands I hadn’t heard of, so all noted for the future! And hopefully it gives others some ideas too 🙌
