Properly warm but stylish parka/puffer

I’m know I’m being really fussy.

I’m looking for a warm (I live in Scotland but also often go on trips to cold cities in winter) parka or puffer BUT I don’t want one that looks too sporty/outdoorsy. It’s to wear in the city for eg a day of walking around, and something water resistant would be ideal. I just want something which looks more stylish and less like I’m off hiking. Something simple would be fine, just that would go with jeans/boots etc. I know lots of people just wear outdoors brands over regular clothes but I really am not a fan.

I don’t want down either for ethical reasons so I’m struggling to find anything.

I’ve seen plenty of nice styles from high street shops but I’m not convinced they’d be warm enough.

Any ideas gratefully received!

Zara tend to do a couple of wildcard patterns/colours most years. I’ve had a yellow short one and lilac longer one. Both really warm.

The warmest I’ve got is one of their extreme weather ones in olive, that’s tested to -25 degrees or something.

Vinted had a load in new/very good condition from previous years.

This doesn’t tick the colourful boxes but I did see it and think it looked more stylish than many www.oasisfashion.com/quilted-belted-maxi-coat/AAA06386.html

I have similar to this and the Athena, I didn't want bulky or down. Both really warm and because of the chevrons more flattering than the usual puffer style.

You could try Holland and Cooper also.

This doesn’t look very warm and it’s too plain for me but hopefully will suit someone else, thanks!

Wear a thermoball under a stylish wool coat. That's as close as it gets
I look every year for the unicorn you describe. Have notvfound it yet.

@J0y thats what someone else suggested and is a really good idea, thank you. I already have a thermoball for hiking and smarter coats so I can definitely do that on dry days! Why is it so hard to find this unicorn coat 😂

Patagonia
Probably too plain for you, and pricey, but it will probably outlive you. I have a Patagonia parka that I am about to get out for it's 23rd winter, and Patagonia baselayers from 1996.

I did a diy version of the linked coat after finding nothing in the shops! Tretorn waterproof rain coat plus a ultralight primark knee-length jacket to wear under. 150 euro and its perfect.

J0y · 13/09/2022 07:51

@ChilliPB I've spent a fortune on heavy wool coats, hobbs, Tommy hilfiger, and I have a North face brooklyn parka which is not as warm as I thought it'd be!! I like it's simplicity though. For somebody who drives and never goes for walks or catches a bus, it would be warm enough.

For all my advice to wear a thermoball under a stylish coat, I can only get so far in to the winter before I switch to a roxy ski parka which is warmer than my brookly north face parka. Its bulkier too though. Im in Dublin which is near the sea, so even when it's "mild'the wind makes it feel freezin

So, I'm still searching for something as warm as my roxy ski coat which cunningly disguises itself as a wool coat

Why will nobody invent this???? The public demands it!

RaininginDarling · 13/09/2022 08:18

I'm always amazed retailers don't cotton on to offering a stylish warm and waterproof coat.

Last year I bought an oversized Top Shop parka in bottle green with a large black trim hood (synthetic). Bought it for a tenner on eBay. I waterproofed it at home with some tec wash, which worked surprisingly well.

In Feb, we went to Berlin with a couple of friends who work in TV industry and have all the weather gear, mostly RAB, which looked very stylish - but I was the only one in our party who stayed dry and warm in the, sometimes, heavy winter rain.

J0y · 13/09/2022 08:26

Wrt North face being down market!! have pity on the poor middle aged woman who discovered this just after buying one.

But 14 year old boys weren't on my radar, fashion wise.

I figure the reverse is true and different rules apply to me as I'm not doing small laps on a bike.

Vicliz24 · 13/09/2022 08:33

I bought a gorgeous olive and tomato red long puffa from Rino and Pelle last year and was absolutely toasty . I believe it's called the Keila coat .

Pricklesinperil · 13/09/2022 08:51

Welcome @ChilliPB ! I’m still searching for my perfect coat - I have all your requirements plus another one - it MUST suit an hourglass figure - I don’t think such a coat exists …………..

Gandys has some nice puffer jackets in different colours.

Marimekko? A bit different at least, and they change patterns quite often. Not sure about what they use for padding - I've not got a coat from them - but they seem to cope well with Scandinavian winters. Their clothes are known for their good quality.
