Properly warm but stylish parka/puffer

I’m know I’m being really fussy.

I’m looking for a warm (I live in Scotland but also often go on trips to cold cities in winter) parka or puffer BUT I don’t want one that looks too sporty/outdoorsy. It’s to wear in the city for eg a day of walking around, and something water resistant would be ideal. I just want something which looks more stylish and less like I’m off hiking. Something simple would be fine, just that would go with jeans/boots etc. I know lots of people just wear outdoors brands over regular clothes but I really am not a fan.

I don’t want down either for ethical reasons so I’m struggling to find anything.

I’ve seen plenty of nice styles from high street shops but I’m not convinced they’d be warm enough.

Any ideas gratefully received!

@ChilliPB

I like this. They have it in black, camel and olive too.

TRY PROTECTED SPECIES
I have had two parka(s)
One got lost/ half inched and I immediately replaced. I wear mine with a Uniqlo body warmer underneath but this winter version has a fleece lining.
Totally waterproof and so so comfy.

I'm going to try and create something like this I've decided. Size up on a wool zip up coat, chop the sleeves off, maybe not as short as here, but above the wrist. Then get an insulated inner.
I like the one in the photo but 835 euro, yikes, and not much information about its warmth. I could put together a version of this. Or would I look like a dogs dinner. Hmmm

Creenstone sometimes have some more colourful coats in their range. Very warm and are at least us usually cut well so look
more stylish. Don’t think their full winter range is out yet ( and they aren’t cheap!)

@ChilliPB I've spent a fortune on heavy wool coats, hobbs, Tommy hilfiger, and I have a North face brooklyn parka which is not as warm as I thought it'd be!! I like it's simplicity though. For somebody who drives and never goes for walks or catches a bus, it would be warm enough.

For all my advice to wear a thermoball under a stylish coat, I can only get so far in to the winter before I switch to a roxy ski parka which is warmer than my brookly north face parka. Its bulkier too though. Im in Dublin which is near the sea, so even when it's "mild'the wind makes it feel freezin

So, I'm still searching for something as warm as my roxy ski coat which cunningly disguises itself as a wool coat

Why will nobody invent this???? The public demands it!

I think the retailer that nails this would do so well! I’m in Scotland so it’s cold and windy here too, although this isn’t a coat for hiking, but for walking into town/wandering around at the weekends. I’ve got loads of ideas from this thread which is great and will definitely be putting a thermoball under a smart coat when it’s dry and cold. The problem is it’s always threatening rain so I’d love something that was warm and at least shower proof!

I'm always amazed retailers don't cotton on to offering a stylish warm and waterproof coat.

Last year I bought an oversized Top Shop parka in bottle green with a large black trim hood (synthetic). Bought it for a tenner on eBay. I waterproofed it at home with some tec wash, which worked surprisingly well.

In Feb, we went to Berlin with a couple of friends who work in TV industry and have all the weather gear, mostly RAB, which looked very stylish - but I was the only one in our party who stayed dry and warm in the, sometimes, heavy winter rain.

@RaininginDarling that’s a good point about waterproofing a coat. I wouldn’t have thought for that and will definitely research…..!

I bought a gorgeous olive and tomato red long puffa from Rino and Pelle last year and was absolutely toasty . I believe it's called the Keila coat .

@Vicliz24 never heard of this brand before so thank you for that recommendation!

Gandys has some nice puffer jackets in different colours.

@Higgeldypiggeldy35 this sort of thing isn’t my style but hopefully it’ll help someone else - thank you!

Marimekko? A bit different at least, and they change patterns quite often. Not sure about what they use for padding - I've not got a coat from them - but they seem to cope well with Scandinavian winters. Their clothes are known for their good quality.

Marimekko

@Loiste thanks for this - it isn’t my style but hopefully will help someone else as they are a bit more interesting than lots of the other stuff available!

Thanks @Trumpton I’d worry this wouldn’t be warm enough for me for winter with temps hovering around or below 0. They are nice and simple though so good brand to know about, thank you!

@Ridingladybugs another brand I’ve not heard of - a lot of their stuff is down - but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for their new winter stuff, thank you!

I have 2 lovely (non sporty) parkas - one from Boden and one from Next. The latter is the Emma Willis one and it's very warm!! Basically wearing a duvet.

Mortigua · 14/09/2022 18:20

@Ridingladybugs please can I ask what the sizing is like on the Rino and Pelle Keila coat ? It’s lovely and I’m tempted but between sizes !

Ridingladybugs · 14/09/2022 18:27

@Mortigua - I think you tagged the wrong person 😊

Mortigua · 14/09/2022 18:34

Oh sorry! Yes you’re right it was @Vicliz24 with the Rino and Pelle coat!

Yes no problem. I'm a 10-12 but with broad shoulders and DD boobs . They both fitted me but the 12 had more room for thicker jumpers underneath.

Mortigua · 14/09/2022 20:04

Thank you that’s really helpful! They are really nice and I hadn’t heard of them before. I love the two colours thing !

mamaduckbone · 14/09/2022 20:12

Have you tried Uniqlo? I got a beautiful long coat from there last year. Mine is down (I know, I know...) but they had plenty of styles that weren't IIRC.

MenaiMna · 14/09/2022 20:18

Landsend but from USA site - those are made for proper cold eg primaloft parka in purple

Paddingtonthebear · 14/09/2022 20:23

Haven’t read the full thread but Aigle may be worth a look.
