Wedding guest outfit help

We are invited to a casual pub 'wedding' in London, 1st week Oct. We have to buy our own food/drink, and are not invited to the actual registry office part.

I've put on weight due to rounds of IVF (which failed), WFH and just laziness. I'm now size 16, GG boobs and an overall fat, hourglass shape with shapeless legs. 168cm (5'6). I have no dresses which still fit. What would you wear? What is flattering on a fat, hourglass shape?

I'm early 40's BTW with dark hair.

Bearing in mind the coming expense of having to pay for food and drink at the venue - how much do you want to spend on your outfit?

MuddlerInLaw · 05/09/2022 23:12

This might be gorgeous worn with cowboy or patent boots.

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 05/09/2022 23:18

This is lovely. You could wear with heels or flats.

MuddlerInLaw · 05/09/2022 23:18

And this jumpsuit is only available in a 16 …

MarmiteCoriander · 05/09/2022 23:20

@CountryCousin - Good point! I'd say £100, but flexible. I don't want to be overdressed, but equally would like something flattering. I haven't been to a wedding in 10+ yrs, and those were all far more formal events.

Can you rewear anything that you've already got? I wouldn't put too much effort into buying an outfit for a reception where I have to buy my own food. Presumably the couple also want a gift..?

MarmiteCoriander · 05/09/2022 23:31

@TheEggChair - As mentioned, I've put on alot of weight over recent years due to various reasons, including mobility issues due to arthritis also, so no, previous outfits wouldn't fit. That would have been my 1st choice! I've never been a size 16, nor had an 'event' to dress for since covid, so feel a bit lost.

Are jumpsuits still a thing?

MarmiteCoriander · 05/09/2022 23:36

@Motheranddaughtertotwo I like that dress, maybe in green, thanks.

@MuddlerInLaw - I didn't mean the comment about jumpsuits to be directed at you. I only read your post after and was thinking in general whether they are still 'in' as haven't been to any event in years.

Please try and talk better of yourself though op.you’ve been through an awful lot.

Whataretheodds · 06/09/2022 15:38

Also, yes please be kind to yourself. I know wedding outfit shopping can be the pits, let alone when you're not feeling yourself.

JoeMaplin · 06/09/2022 16:20

Jolie moi dresses and jumpsuits are very flattering and comfortable. I’m a 16 too.

MarmiteCoriander · 06/09/2022 20:59

Thanks everyone.

I like some of your suggestions @Whataretheodds . In terms of shoes, I will likely wear something I have, but depends on the outfit. I have hobbit wide feet (literally) so generally prefer wedges or lower heels- not stilettos. Any suggestions though of something comfy would be appreciated though.

@JoeMaplin - Some great options on the jolie moi site. thank you.

Jokie moi is also sold in Next if that is easier for trying on.

GreenManalishi · 06/09/2022 21:36

This sounds like a really relaxed low key wedding, what about something like this (although asos quality can be very hit and miss) with some big bangles and big earrings? You could put almost anything on your feet with this too, whichever direction you wanted to go in.

MarmiteCoriander · 06/09/2022 22:15

@GreenManalishi - I agree, its hard to judge, but I too expect it to be far more smart casual, rather than cocktail dresses and suits. I was thinking of a similar jumpsuit, but I wouldn't wear black- even to a casual wedding. I'll see if they have other colours and in a V neck. thank you.
