Does this look like Curly Girl potential?

I would die for curls. I had curls as a toddler and for a random year in my teens. Both my kids have/had ringlets. But I tried curly girl once and my hair got MORE straight and very lank! And it was just too complicated and high maintenance for me. Humid day today and here are pics.

Current hair routine is honestly brush every other day (I’m a slob with a young baby), head and shoulders and tresemme hydrating conditioner. Air dry. So any routine will be higher maintenance to be honest! Thinking of Only Curls? But only because of my targeted ads.

Defo curly potentiaL! You can get started with any old conditioner without sulphates (Aldi apple one is ace as is Alberto balsam raspberry etc— use to shampoo and condition - then squish in a curl cream, Noughty/Only Curls/boucleme etc then squish in a gel or mousse whilst soaking wet.

YouTube has loads of Curly Girl Method vids, it’s quite easy once you get going! X

Perhaps try looking up curly girl method for wavies if you find full curly girl makes your hair lank.

Don't mess about with too much product but ditch sulfates and silicones asap.

MassiveSalad22 · 05/09/2022 19:45

Ooh great thanks! I’ll give it another shot. Exciting!

Following with interest as I have similar hair, and I already have the aldi Apple shampoo 😅

Any suggestions for a cheap, no silicon final shampoo?

Ilovelindor · 05/09/2022 19:54

Definitely got potential.

I've got curly hair and even I think curly girl is a load of needless and confusing crap. Wash your hair as often as it needs washing with whatever the hell you want. I dont bother with sulphate free or cowashing etc. The only thing I would advise you to avoid is John Frieda because it makes my hair go rubbish.

Buy some gel, curl creme or mousse. Gel and mousse are generally a bit crisper than creme. When your hair is still wet, slap a load of gel/creme/mouse through it. The hair must be wet not damp. Scrunch it all up. Use a diffuser on your hair dryer if you have one to help scrunch it up a bit, but only really to take the rough off, not to actually dry it. Then just leave it. Once it's dry, scrunch/shake it up a bit to loosen it up a bit.

Only brush your hair immediately after washing. Never between washes. Each morning, wet your hair a bit and apply some more gel/creme/mousse to curl it back up again. Easy peasy.

MassiveSalad22 · 05/09/2022 20:03

@Ilovelindor ok this sounds very doable. With my boys I barely wash their hair, never brush it and do put water on it to refresh the curls sometimes. So sounds like that. I may get a diffuser. Just sounds a bit manky to not wash your hair - what about after workouts etc? Dry shampoo?

Look at the Curly Girl for Wavies group on FB. My hair hates full curly girl but lighter products and clarifying shampoo saved me 🤣

AutumnIsUponUs · 05/09/2022 20:37

I have similar hair. I got the starter pack from only curls and it’s amazing. I’d highly recommend it. There’s lots of reviews on You Tube and Tik Tok. It does what it says on the bottle.

Newuser82 · 05/09/2022 20:39

My hair is similar. I got the Merwave products. Worked brilliantly! If I want it curly I wash it with their stuff and if I'm going to straighten it I use my usual shampoo/conditioner! Loads of friends and family have brought it since seeing my hair.

Find a decent curly hairdresser & get a good curly cut. They will also advise you how to look after it.

mathanxiety · 05/09/2022 20:46

You can't brush your hair when dry if you want the CG approach to work, so no dry shampoo.

The oil production cycle will tail off after a short while using only conditioner. Your scalp produces oil to make up for what's stripped away by shampoo. There's an in between period that isn't great but don't lose heart.

The Aldi apple shampoo has sulphates. It is ok for a final shampoo but not curly girl friendly.

XHC shampoo is sulphate free and the conditioner is full curly girl friendly. Only £1 from savers or b&m

Thanks for all the info everyone! Am going to research and go for it! What does everyone do when they get sweaty? Just wash your hair I guess, just with conditioner? Does conditioner really get rid of dirt and grease?? (My kids’ rarely-washed hair is definitely not greasy or dirty but don’t trust my own to be the same ha)

I rarely use shampoo these days unless my head has got itchy. Just conditioner, usually a lighter one like Faith in nature and a scalp rub with fingers or round scrubby thing. Rinse out and then a richer one for the leave in a while bit. Usually comb through the second lot as I rinse out. I tend not to use leave in conditioner as my hair is quite fine. The Only Curls products are good.

PattyMelt · 05/09/2022 22:28

I only shampoo about once every few weeks. I wash with Garnier ultimate blends coconut conditioner and use a bit of Pantene conditioner after. (not recommended by many but works for me) Then while wet I use a dolop of Garnier hair food and leave it in. scrunch and air dry. My hair never gets greasy If it feels too dry I pull some more hair food through the end before bed. If it's windy I put some oil on it so it doesn't frizz into a side show bob hairdo.

Look up denman curls on YouTube!
the brush makes my curls so much more defined x

MassiveSalad22 · 06/09/2022 07:28

Had the denman brush for my whole child/teenhood!! Ok loving this I hope it all works!

Hello again! This is post first Only Curls wash 😃 I’m so excited!! Definitely more of a wave than curl I guess but I still feel nice. Still not fully dry. I wonder if this is it or if it will get even more curly over the next few weeks. It’s nice to look after myself a bit!
