What is the hairdresser putting on my white/grey hair?

I realise I could ask but I forget.

My hair is pretty white now and a few times they've asked if I want to brighten it up. And it works - looks much cleaner/brighter/lighter.

What products are they using? I thought purple shampoos only really worked on faded dyed hair.

Thanks

Toner?

SucculentSunshine · 31/08/2022 20:02

It’ll be a toner.

ThisIsNotAFlyingToy · 31/08/2022 20:05

Thanks both. What do I search for - toner for white hair? Any product recommendations?

I use Jerome Russell Blonde Maximum Blonde Toner, you can buy it in Superdrug its about £4 a bottle, amazon sell it too.
It comes in different shades of blonde and silver too.
Wash your hair, then put it on, put a shower cap on, heat it up for a couple of minutes with the hairdryer then leave for the required time, up to, I think, 35 minutes, do a strand test first if you want to check the colour.
Super easy to use you just rinse it out and your hair will be super soft too

I'd be amazed if they were using toner without actually telling you. Most likely it's a strong purple shampoo. Osmo is used quite often in salons. I have white hair myself.

Ah, thank you @CeeceeBloomingdale Yes, nothing is left on to develop. It's just part of the shampooing routine.

You would pay extra for toner so it’s probably a violet shampoo/conditioner

My hairdresser uses Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel hair on my grey/blonde barnet which makes it look lovely

Purple shampoo perks my silver hair up . I only use it once a fortnight to avoid the lavender rinse effect but it does sparkle after I've used it . I also use a shampoo bar called the gloss bar from White hot hair that's lovely too and not purple.

My grey hair looks brighter when I use L’Oréal professional silver shampoo. I’m going to try toner too.

Hairdresser here! Likely to be purple shampoo, they are amazing for white hair. The deposits from tap water make white hair look really dull. Just make sure if you use one, use a good conditioner too as they can have a drying effect on the hair. Kevin Murphy Blonde Angel is excellent. Neal & Wolf Blonde shampoo is also good.

Thanks all for the recommendations. Will be trying some of these out.
