Solovairs (or DMs) and 'smart creative' work clothes

Already have some Solovair 8 eye derby boots, love them. They don't feel quite right with my winter work style (midi 70s style dresses; 60s mod dresses and A line mini skirts; pencil skirts with an edge to keep things quirky rather than prim. All with 60 black denier tights).
I often work in cold environments (holding events in all kinds of venues, or now, at home with the heating low/off). I have wide, demanding, high arched feet. The average stylish boot won't meet their rigorous requirements. So far, they are happy in Solovair.
Can anyone visualise my style and a Solovair derby boot and whether it would work?
I like to look unusual and my style won't appeal to all. I could post some recent dress/skirt purchases if that would help.

I have some oxblood Solovair monkey boots which I like to wear with dresses and tights in winter. They've got a slightly retro/60s vibe to my eye - and are slightly less work boot like when compared to standard derby boots - so might be worth considering?

Watching with interest as your style sounds fab!

SheWoreYellow · 29/08/2022 09:18

Do post your recent purchases, I dunno if I can help, but I really like the sound of your look. 😊

NiceTwin · 29/08/2022 09:20

I have some Solovair but have ventured in Lanx boots for this coming winter.

SheWoreYellow · 29/08/2022 09:21

Having had a look at the boots, I think the burgundy have a different feel to the black, would you be able to get those? Especially if you could wear them with non black tights. I can then see it working. Black tights might still be ok.
Are cable/textured tights too fussy?

NiceTwin · 29/08/2022 09:22

I should say, they might work with your style.
They are great, well made, quality boots.

The burgundy rub-off monkey boots are lovely. I have the Jade boots from Toast in that colour, and get lots of compliments on them. The astronaut boot might be better with work clothes.
I wear black dealer boots with dresses for work

popularinthe80s · 29/08/2022 17:28

Thanks for all ideas. @JofraArchersFastestBall, love the Monkey boots. I'm not completely sure because I have short legs, and oddly I found a DM Monkey boot shortened my leg. (That doesn't make mathematical sense, but it did). But agree they look less like I'm going to cut timber. Solovair's are slightly differently cut so may be worth trying.

@KirstenBlest , my DH has the astronauts, may be worth a look.

@Rockshore and @SheWoreYellow . Here's a few recent purchases. I will be wearing with Solovairs:

This one is a marmite one - on me, it's a maxi, and a bit Abigail's Party, and I will wear with a ridiculously cheap All Saints leather jacket which I watched and then pounced upon when I calculated that the company (selling on eBay) would have assumed no one would buy it.

I didn't pay full price for any of them, and this is not a usual spending year for me, gained some peri meno weight and needed to sell and replenish.

Hadn't heard of those - thank you, @NiceTwin (are you?😉)

popularinthe80s · 29/08/2022 17:31

@SheWoreYellow sorry, missed your suggestion. I'm open to cable tights, can you rec any?

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 29/08/2022 17:39

Your taste in dresses are completely different to mine. I'm more Toast/Plumo (and/or cheaper lookalikes) and pinafore/bib'n'brace cord dresses.
My cable tights are from M&S, Tesco or Primark, I think. I sometimes wear things from the children's sections

dmask · 29/08/2022 17:43

I find Cos suits me, I am also short. They have a resell tab on their website where you can buy things cheaper.

I like the Toast dresses, but they swamp me and make me look shorter! I have a similar pair of boots from R&B and I wear them with thick black tights and mid thigh a-line dresses. I find you can get away with a shorter style for work if you’re short!

popularinthe80s · 29/08/2022 18:16

@KirstenBlest a good friend of mine wears a lot of Toast. It looks beautiful on her. But on me, I look like I'm borrowing my big sister's dress. It's annoying as I like the vibe and the quality.
I've found I need to fit my curves, otherwise I disintegrate into a sack of spuds.

@dmask, definitely, I'm a bit older and a lot shorter than my colleagues and no one bats an eyelid at my minis. I wear them with flat boots, mind.

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 29/08/2022 19:09

@popularinthe80s , that's exactly what they are like on me. I need things that skim.

popularinthe80s · 30/08/2022 06:47

I don't understand, @KirstenBlest - did you mean that Toast skim on you?
They drown me!

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 30/08/2022 07:56

No, I most certainly didn't. I need to wear styles that skim the body. The toast and cos ones seem too boxy for me.

The current styles would probably hang off my shoulders or boobs making me look wide and shapeless. From a quick glance, the dungarees look like they'd suit me, with a slim fitting T-shirt or something underneath, but the dresses look like they'd transform me into a blob.

KirstenBlest · 30/08/2022 07:57

that should have read boxy and billowing for the Toast ones.

popularinthe80s · 31/08/2022 13:38

Ah, I didn't post any dungarees...

OP posts:
KirstenBlest · 31/08/2022 14:59

Did you want to. It would probably boost the economy. I've ordered some, not from Toast, this morning to add to the huge pile of simikar items and am still looking at ankle boots.
I think I might have been a painting and decorating millipede in a previous life.

popularinthe80s · 03/09/2022 07:30

No, I didn't, @KirstenBlest
I was referring to your comment 'From a quick glance, the dungarees look like they'd suit me, with a slim fitting T-shirt or something underneath'
I'm a bit confused, probably need my morning coffee
Anyway, thanks everyone for your suggestions. I love the idea of burgundy and the Jade style.

Glorieta · 03/09/2022 07:40

@popularinthe80s slightly off topic but i have that mango pink coat.
I'm only 5 4 so its knee length on me.

Have worn it all spring/summer with maxi dresses jeans and knee length dresses but now back at work with tailored trousers.

Haven't worn it with tights yet but I'm thinking less is more - patterned or textured tights would be too heavy with the coat which sings with plainer accessories

My one complaint is that it has bobbled badly where my laptop bag has rubbed but I'm sure I can sort that

Skinterior · 03/09/2022 07:57

I work at a creative place where we need to look smart / cool (I know, Confused).

EVERYONE who has a creative role seems to be buying DMs at the moment.

We feel sorry for the heel wearers in the finance / corporate departments

I've just found a brand that do the most gorgeous slightly fifties style dresses and my plan is a leather jacket and boots of various styles all winter.

Can't wait for autumn proper Grin
