Wfh -no heating what to wear

Professional - on video a lot.

I had the heating on a lot last winter and don't want to do that this winter.....

Looking for warm clothes ideas

So far I've looked at some thermal layers, slippers, a big knit cardigan - but lacking knowledge of truly warm clothing. Haven't been camping in years, for example!

Also long thin hot water bottles which you can curve round the bottom of your back

QueenofLouisiana · 27/08/2022 21:35

I’ve spent the last two winters in classroom with all the doors and windows open. I’ve worn:
Thermal tights and leggings (Aldi/ Lidl are good)
thermal long sleeved tops (Sainsburys)
knitted poncho things with faux fur collars
Jumpers from Everything five pounds

silentpool · 27/08/2022 21:35

Fleece leggings or long johns under tracksuit pants, wool socks, slippers with additional wool insole.

On top, thermal top under a teeshirt, followed by a jumper. If not on camera, add an Oodie/hoodie and fingerless gloves. My electric throw gets a good workout too.

But soon that'll be 90p an hour or £2 an hour.

I keep thinking that too whenever heated throws are mentioned. I'd get a good set (or two) of merino base layers instead.

Lilithslove · 27/08/2022 21:47

A couple of year ago ago uniqlo did cheap thermals that look like ordinary roll neck tops. Might be worth seeing what they have.

2bazookas · 27/08/2022 21:50

Thermal underwear wrist to ankle under your other clothes. A pure silk scarf wrapped round your neck (cheap from charity shops). thick warm socks.

spiderontheceiling · 27/08/2022 21:55

I wfh for a decade before Covid and never had the heating on as it didn't make sense to heat the whole house to just me. My outfit was:

  • my thermal long johns & thermal long sleeved top from skiing holidays with the top tucked into the bottoms
  • normal socks tucked into the thermal long johns with a pair of fluffy socks over those and then i'd have my Asda version of Uggs on
  • a pair of trousers over the thermal long johns
  • at least one long sleeve top and then a plain jumper with a highish neck over the thermal top
  • blanket over my knees, replaced during lockdown with a heated throw
  • at least one hot water bottle, if not two (one behind my back and one on my knee)
  • a selection of naice scarves within grabbing distance which I'd wear for both warmth and as a pretence of a stylish finishing touch to my outfit
  • made sure I got up & moved around regularly

A friend used to just get inside a sleeping bag. It was harder to move around in that!

eurochick · 27/08/2022 22:07

I got the Celtic and Co house boots last winter and they made a huge difference to how warm I felt.

I also have some big pashmina type scarves that look great on camera thrown over casual layers for calls. Pashminas look passé in real life but somehow work well on screen imo.

Nat6999 · 27/08/2022 22:10

I'm getting loads of thermals from Decathlon, I already have the Heatgen plus leggings from M & S, I'm considering an Oodie, I already have a heated blanket & I'm crocheting loads of throws in Bernat Blanket yarn for my bed. I've bought an old fashioned kettle to use on the gas hobs in case of power cuts & am buying fingerless thermal gloves to go with my heatholders socks, I can just about fit a pair in my Ugg boots.

Trainfromredhill · 27/08/2022 22:11

Sainsburys boot slippers are the biz. I have the vilest feet and they always warm them up and keep them warm. Vest, Tshirt, jumper, fleece. Hot water bottle on lap if required.

WhereAreWeNow · 27/08/2022 22:13

Several layers of thermals. Polo neck jumper over thermals. Uniqlo heat tech joggers. Thermal socks. Sheepskin slippers. Hot water bottle. Blanket. Fingerless gloves.

QuebecBagnet · 27/08/2022 22:19

Last winter I was in a duvet jacket and woolly hat even on video calls. 😁.

AquaTorfanaa · 27/08/2022 22:24

Cheap knock off Ugg boots and Heat Holder thermal socks. If you're not an indoor shoes person, rest your feet on a hot water bottle covered with a blanket. Cold hands and feet are the worst so cover your feet and get some wrist warmers/fingerless gloves so you can still type.

canonlyhopexo · 27/08/2022 22:30

I wear my Oodie and take it off before a call 😂 or even my dressing gown over my clothes. I also last winter used my hot water bottle a lot. I don't like putting the heating on when it's just me at home all day.

Unforgettablefire · 27/08/2022 22:32

YingMei · 27/08/2022 21:11

DH bought me a heated throw last year. Bloody amazing - wrapped it round myself and could then concentrate on work. Worth every penny and much cheaper to have on than the heating

Which one have you got? I've got a Lakeland throw and I'm worried about the cost of even running that in October 🫤

spiderontheceiling · 27/08/2022 22:42

The other thing I did was make myself a cup of herbal tea, leave the bag in and take a flask of hot water through to my office with me. I'd use the flask to top the mug up all morning meaning I always had a warm drink to hand or to use as a hand warmer

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 27/08/2022 23:00

Literally wrapping a blanket around your bottom half helps and can't be seen on a video call! I did that last winter.

Scarves are also good and make a difference.

FridayiminlovewithRobertSmith · 27/08/2022 23:04

Always have a few gap merino tops to layer -merino is always my smart staple for winter

MrsMontyD · 28/08/2022 10:22

Thankfully I can get away with a casual look on calls, I bought some plain round neck sweatshirt slast winter and I'm going to add a couple more. I have a blanket around my legs and boot style slippers and if it's really cold a second blanket around my shoulders while I'm not on a call.

I have an electric heater I use to warm the room up and then turn off. I have had some issues with condensation though so I think I'll make sure I have the window open this winter when I'm not in the office (spare bedroom) or use the dehumidifier for a while in the evening.

I've just ordered some turtle doves fingerless gloves while their sale is on, I got a code XTRA10 for another 10% off on top of the sale price, and they get such good reviews I thought of splash out.

NotMeNoNo · 28/08/2022 16:24

Thermals
Thin and thick jumpers
Cowl or scarf
Turtle doves gloves
Blanket over knees and Ugg style slipper boots

LuciferRising · 28/08/2022 20:49

I like the fleece lined walking trousers from Acai, with thermal socks. Long sleeved thermal top and some kind of wool jumper. Wool poncho. Wrist warmers.

Have some nice base layer tops and fleece lined tops from Decathlon. Treated myself to a Barbour body warmer.

IrisVersicolor · 28/08/2022 21:14

So my current wfh low heating wardrobe is:

  • 100% wool jumper dresses from Celtic & Co sale and Uniqlo.
  • On top of which I wear one of the following:
  • Paisley pashmina 70% cashmere cheap on eBay worn as wrap
  • Faux fur gilet
  • Uniqlo down gilet
  • Smart fleece jacket from Lands End sale.
  • Underneath:
  • Sheepskin bootees on sale from BrandAlley - keeping your feet toastie keeps your whole body warm.
  • 100% wool tights (M&S are cheapest)
  • Damart thermal vest
  • Cashmere wrist warmers made from recycled cashmere.

Hot water bottle on your back or at your feet.

I know, I figure boiling water is cheaper. 😂

But fleece blanket are v warm on their own.

Yes I agree, for Zoom a selection of scarves make a jumper top look smart.

I’ve collected some wool ones so they add warmth too.
