Wfh -no heating what to wear

Professional - on video a lot.

I had the heating on a lot last winter and don't want to do that this winter.....

Looking for warm clothes ideas

So far I've looked at some thermal layers, slippers, a big knit cardigan - but lacking knowledge of truly warm clothing. Haven't been camping in years, for example!

When I worked without heating I wore:

fleece lined tights under trousers
Uniqlo thermal base layer (tuck it IN to the tights)
long sleeve shirt and then tank top and then jacket -- the multiple layers really do it
huge bedsocks
a hat (that I took off for calls)
a blanket (that I took off for calls)
fingerless gloves that went down my wrists

Spanielsarepainless · 27/08/2022 20:37

I would add to the excellent clothing suggestions that if you go for a brisk walk before work and at lunchtime you will feel warmer for longer.

AshTrees · 27/08/2022 20:39

I found WFH sitting in a sleeping bag up to the waist was the warmest option last winter.Better than a throw because you don't have the cold draughts on the back of your legs where the throw doesn't cover. My DDs old DofE sleeping bag will be coming out again this year!

RudsyFarmer · 27/08/2022 20:40

Definitely layers and heated throw. You can have it under your bum and over your lap during calls.

Spudlet · 27/08/2022 20:44

Real wool jumpers. They cost a lot to buy brand new, but you can get good ones secondhand on Depop, Vinted or eBay. Much warmer than manmade fibres.

lesleykerry · 27/08/2022 20:48

Thermal underwear and Wooly Tights for sure

EllaPaella · 27/08/2022 20:54

M&S heatgen thermals under your clothes (tops and leggings) and some really warm socks!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 27/08/2022 20:56

Actual sheepskin slippers (not acrylic fleece) or sheepskin in soles and wool-rich socks.

Dazedandconfused10 · 27/08/2022 21:01

Fleeced lined leggings, slippers and a fleece lined hoody that's not over sized like an oodie so I can wear during calls. The oodie is for after work slobbery

Puppypads · 27/08/2022 21:04

Definitely slipper boots and warm socks. Cold feet ruin everything.
Thermal vests from M&S.

long johns
Regular breaks to do the hoovering 😁

TheABC · 27/08/2022 21:06

Thermals, double layered socks and wrist warmers are your friend. I suffer badly from the cold and when the temp drops, I plan to snuggle my bottom half in a sleeping bag with a hot water bottle at the bottom.

kikiterrific · 27/08/2022 21:09

Uniqlo do the best thermals.

YingMei · 27/08/2022 21:11

DH bought me a heated throw last year. Bloody amazing - wrapped it round myself and could then concentrate on work. Worth every penny and much cheaper to have on than the heating

chillipenguin · 27/08/2022 21:12

Everyone will be in oodies and fingerless gloves.

Or M&S thermals under whatever you would usually wear.

M&S heatgen thermals under your clothes (tops and leggings) and some really warm socks!

I imagine M&S are raking it in - over 100+ people looking at the thermals last time I looked

Irridescantshimmmer · 27/08/2022 21:15

Onesies with lots of layers underneath

VivX · 27/08/2022 21:17

I have wfh for years. I find cotton layers to be effective. So I wear 100% cotton vest tops and then long-sleeved t shirts and hoodies. Sometimes a scarf too.
For calls you can take off the hoodie and rearrange the scarf.
Jeans or fleece-lined leggings. And fleece-lined leggings under normal trousers for added insulation.
Knee high socks.
Boot-style slippers.
And wrist warmers (which reach from knuckle to forearms)

When really cold, a fleece blanket.

The dog sits with me sometimes which is like having a little furry hot water bottle.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 27/08/2022 21:17

Getting lots of ideas, thanks! Last year I had slipper socks over my normal socks and to cover that gap at the end of my trouser leg. I've now found my old fake uggs so I'll wear those this year; but I'm tempted by the sleeping bag option for my lower half, I think my son's old child sleeping bag is still around somewhere and would be perfect.

Katnissx · 27/08/2022 21:17

What about a jumper with a shirt underneath with the collar out over the jumper to look a bit smarter?

Heated throw - 10p an hour.
There were loads of winter clothes in the shops today- like lounge wear.

But soon that'll be 90p an hour or £2 an hour.

I like this idea

Sheffieldissunny · 27/08/2022 21:27

What we did in a cold office with no central heating, was tape a foil blanket as a long table cloth all round the desk with a cheap blanket over that and put a low power electric heater under neath and when you put your legs in the little den with the blanket on your knees iyswim it warms all your body and it retains the heat from the heater really well. My brother did it with a table in his his first flat with no central heating.

Catslovepies · 27/08/2022 21:27

A fleece neckwarmer makes more of a difference than you would think, ut take it off for video calls. Turtleneck shirts are good also.

Last winter I found out another coworker had an oodie too and we made a pact to keep ours on when talking to each other on video 😁. This year hopefully a few more will get them!

Sheffieldissunny · 27/08/2022 21:30

Oh and fingerless gloves if it's really cold!

Pawpatrolwereonaroll · 27/08/2022 21:32

Merino wool long sleeved top/best plus merino wool leggings under everything. Wool slippers
