Winter wedding guest -outside wedding

Help!
I'm going to a wedding towards the end of October. The ceremony is outside - on a beach. In England.
What do I wear???
I'm short and overweight - very apple shaped. Early 40s.
I'm not wealthy so don't have a huge amount to spend (hoping £30 for a dress) but I'd still like to look stylish and be warm.

I don't have any suggestions other than dress for comfort and warmth!!! Why would people do this to their guests?!

Is the reception indoors somewhere warm?? If so I'd just dress for that and add coat and depending on cold and rainy it is scarf, hat, umbrella etc. Perhaps boots/flats for the beach.

Whataretheodds · 21/08/2022 19:16

A relative got married in December - i wore a jumpsuit with ankle boots (changed for the reception) and a cropped furry cape (just to elbows). If I'd been wearing a dress I'd have gone with knee-high boots.
Do you have a smart coat? If so I'd focus on that with a coordinated hat and gloves, and the right shoes. Maybe a brooch or scarf in complementary colour.

Cardi underneath over your actual outfit if needed.

Whataretheodds · 21/08/2022 19:18

You can shed all the extra layers for the reception assuming it's inside!

MarpleFan · 21/08/2022 19:20

Are they mad?! I hope they have a back up option!

Assuming it does go ahead outside, I would invest in some heattech thermals from Uniqlo - really thin, so can be worn under most things.

Aside from practicalities, I would go for palazzo pants or a great wrap dress and tights, which I think are really flattering on pretty much everyone.

Think layering - presumably the reception would be inside so what kept you a bit more cosy will quickly become baking hot once inside. Oh and a decent sized bag to put all the layers in!

RaininSummer · 21/08/2022 19:22

October is usually wet and windy rather than cold so a very big raincoat and wellies should work.

Albgo · 21/08/2022 19:22

I'm not sure if the reception is inside or not. It's in a cave that opens up onto a beach (I think).
And sadly I don't have a smart winter coat. I've just got ugly sensible warm coats.

Whataretheodds · 21/08/2022 19:25

Could you borrow one ( a smart winter coat)?

PritiPatelsMaker · 21/08/2022 19:27

Could you try getting a coat from eBay?

Autocorrect has just changed that to boat, which may be more fitting, given the time of year Grin

Albgo · 21/08/2022 19:33

So normal wedding outfit with a posh coat and boots??

OP posts:
Whataretheodds · 21/08/2022 19:36

Yes - am assuming you weren't hoping to go in swimming cossie and goggles?!

As PP said, layer up underneath coat as needed.

justasking111 · 21/08/2022 19:42

Charity shop for a smart coat. Hat gloves boots. Mind you I've known warm days in October but maybe not standing around on a beach.

Crucible · 21/08/2022 20:02

Yep charity shop coat, really fabulous scarf, maybe something made with pom.poms from Etsy! I'd go for really thick deep.purple tights with a warm wool wrap dress and boots. Second hand all the way! People getting married are bonkers.

Albgo · 22/08/2022 07:56

Is a black coat a bad idea given it's for a wedding? Do I need to get a more cheerful colour?

OP posts:
Crucible · 22/08/2022 09:22

Nope not a bad idea at all.

Whataretheodds · 22/08/2022 09:58

Black coat fine. Nice to have a colourful scarf/gloves.

Floydthebarber · 22/08/2022 10:02

I would avoid wide trousers or wrap dresses as an October beach stands a good chance of being windy. If the only access to the cave is across the sand then wear flat shoes. Definitely try ebay, vibted, charity shops etc for a dressy coat or jacket.

Floydthebarber · 22/08/2022 10:13

Perhaps consider a hat too like a beret or a choche to keep warm and hair under control. Comhats Womens 1920s Vintage Wool Felt Cloche Bucket Bowler Hat Winter Crushable amzn.eu/d/9mUoocu

Have you Googled the place? There's a cave place in Devon that has glass Doors and heating! A friend was looking at it as a venue

PineappleWilson · 22/08/2022 12:28

thermal underwear and layers are your friend. My mum got married in January, there's a great family photo where her sister in law is obviously dithering with cold. The registry office did all big group photos outside.

Focus on layers and nice gloves, scarf, hat etc. to look elegant but keep you warm.

Ahh it's in Devon! If it's got heating I'll be so happy!

A black coat is fine - you can always get a silky colourful scarf and brighten your outerwear with that!

Summertimesunshineandfizz · 22/08/2022 22:42

I’d be going a touch piratical, with big coat or thigh length belted and a dashing hat!

I think I would go full on Dr Zhivago.

Vinted is your friend here, you'll be able to pick up some colourful bargains from there.
