At what age

In the warmer weather I've always felt pressure to have my legs and arms out but looking around at "older ladies" yesterday they are mostly covered up (Tshirt and linen trousers for example) and you wouldn't think of telling them to wear less because they look good and "age appropriate". So my question is what is that age where you don't feel pressure to have parts of you on show you'd rather not!

I never felt it. Similarly, I'm not sure I feel pressure to cover up now I'm 50. I wonder whether some people worry more about this, at any age, than others.

I suspect so, and I've never felt it either at the same age. Similarly I wouldn't think of ever telling anybody else how they should dress, regardless of age or weather.

I've never felt like I had to have my arms and legs out. I've always wanted to stay covered even when I was much younger.

SallyWD · 13/08/2022 07:49

I've never felt the pressure either. I've just worn what I want at any age.

SimonaRazowska · 13/08/2022 07:51

Never, just wear what you like

Sometimes something loose fitting and bigger can be cooler than a revealing outfit

I wear either depending on mood, though love love love my baggy cotton dress with big baggy sleeves for the hottest days 😄 Keeps the sun off my skin, hence cooler

Why do you feel pressure to have your legs and arms on show - who from?

KangarooKenny · 13/08/2022 07:53

I don’t think anyone wants to see my bingo wings, so I wear a T-shirt. It’s not exactly covering up.

TheOGCCL · 13/08/2022 08:23

Why would you feel pressure to have your legs and arms out?

I tend to wrap up, partly as I feel the cold, partly as i don’t suit certain things like vests and skirts. My skin is blue, my boobs too big, my shoulders too broad.

I’m actually finding I have more flesh on show as I age, maybe I don’t care so much.

I'm 28 and todays the first day I'm in a matching short gym shorts and bra top. Got everything out out and love it

Same here. In very hot weather I've always found loose fitting and covered up in the lightest cotton possible very cooling.

MercuryOnTheRise · 13/08/2022 14:51

I wear what I want, when I want. I have never thought spaghetti straps, mini skirts, shorts and flip flops were appropriate for work, or in town. Fine for the beach/pool/garden.

In this weather I prefer a dress, sleevless at weekends with a short sleeve during the week. Because I am generous of bosom, I need a supportive bra and dress around that because other people don't need to see my underwear.

StarlightLady · 13/08/2022 15:15

40s and sundresses and legs out all the way here! I don't feel pressure to, I feel comfortable.

Thefruitbatdancer · 13/08/2022 15:42

I'm always covered up in long, light coloured clothes because the more skin on show, the more sun damage & cancer risk. I always wear factor 50, particularly on my face all year round instead of moisturiser.

I saw a woman with a strappy vest on and her back was completely burnt, it looked really sore. If she had a t shirt on, her back would have been protected.

BigSkies2022 · 13/08/2022 15:53

Well, I'm in my fifties, and finally at peace with the fact that I barely tan. And I am happy with my weight and shape. I find longer and looser clothing more comfortable in the hot weather, so more likely to be seen in something non-fitting. My arms are quite toned, and I wear good bras these days, so provided I have put plenty of moisturiser on my wrinkly elbows, and sunscreen I'm happy to have my arms and shoulders bare. But I would like to get my varicose veins removed, and fruitless efforts over the years to tan my legs have left me with slightly wrinkly knees and thighs, so you won't see me in shorts or short skirts!

When I was younger I was much more self-critical and self-conscious. And a bit heavier, to be fair. So I covered up more and wore uncomfortable shoes, like a numpty, to try and 'lengthen my legs' like the magazines said!

KohLanta · 13/08/2022 16:06

I'm 40's and at the moment I'm living in a linen shirt and denim cut offs, because I find that the coolest combination in this heat. I like a loose top but like the breeze on my legs. I used to hate my legs but now I think they're fine. They are 40 year old legs that have taken me all over the world! Not going to cover them up through any form of worrying about what others think.

miserablecat · 13/08/2022 16:07

I'm mid 40s and wear what I feel comfortable with. Today that's a strappy vest and short shorts, I don't feel under pressure to wear that i just choose what i think will be comfortabe. I would probably wear a similar thing to work if it's this temperature but i dont have a customer facing role

HarryMyLove · 13/08/2022 23:31

I think under 30s unless religious would get lots of unhelpful: aren't you hot in that?! I feel hot looking at you!
I think if you look overweight they may think they know why (body issues) but if you are medium or slim it's even more of a pressure because they puzzled why you wouldn't have your legs and arms out.

StarlightLady · 14/08/2022 05:38

Warm weather outfit for this 40 something and proud. Longish summer dress, often no bra (depending on the dress and whether l’m at work) and fairly regularly, no knickers 😮.
