Simple Cleansing Lotion Gone Off? Allergic Reaction

I have been using Simple Purifying Cleansing Lotion for years. Never had any issues. It is one of the few non-fragrance yet cheap cleansers.
Bought a bottle the other day. Massaged into face. Noticed a weird, strong smell. Immediately washed it off. Had a burning face all night and the next day.
Checked the bottle - ingredients same, formula not changed.
Could it be a bad batch? or perhaps it has gone off?
Anyone else bought Simple Cleansing Lotion recently and noticed a change?

I had something similar years ago with the Simple Light Moisturiser. I use it all the time and it's never happened since, I assume it was a bad batch.

I haven't used it since, I am trialing La Roche Posay Toleriane recommend on here. So far so good!
