What do people do that weird claw hand when when showing a picture of their nails?

Just on another forum and someone asked for nail recommendations. 90% of the pictures are the good old 'I'm holding an invisible cucumber' shots. Why do people think that this is a nice way to show off their beautiful manicure?

It annoys me almost as much as the pigeon-toed 'I'm all ickle and cute' pose ...

Disclaimer - no it doesn't affect my life, yes people can do what they like and yes, this is light-hearted. 😉

I have just done an imaginary selfie of my non manicured nails and it felt a lot easier to do the ‘invisible cucumber’ 😂 ‘pose’ than pointed straight out fingers ….I’m guessing that’s why.

Do you know another hand position that clearly shows all four fingernails and the thumbnail front on, so that the nail polish, shaping and design can be both seen and photographed properly? I don't, so I would love to find out what it is.

To be fair, a few were holding objects too - a glass of champagne, a small vase of flowers, a small dog's paw (that was my absolute favourite!). I might post one of my hand holding a can of irn bru as it's the closest thing to hand right now. #alwaysclassy

Ohhh I can’t stand it. It looks so inelegant and actually really ugly, IMO, which to my mind is completely at odds with having had a manicure done!

MacKenzieMcHale · 07/08/2022 12:04

Ew I have a real thing about photos of The Claw

🤮

Silverswirl · 07/08/2022 12:04

Not sure why people think that looks nice. In fact the vast majority of those fake garish nails look like horrible cheap tat glued on to your finger.

I'm guessing that would be more important if it were a business type/fellow nail technician style page, where people may critique others' work, rather than someone just looking for ideas for a night out?

Because the hand held flat is wrinkly. According to a friend Wink

TitaniasAss · 07/08/2022 12:07

Can I just add that I have no aversion to a lovely manicure, I love having my own nails done, although I don't do acrylics etc, I can appreciate that some are lovely. It's just ... that claw ...

Swannning · 07/08/2022 12:09

I think picklemewalnuts has it. I have just tried both ways and immediately applied hand cream as the back of my hands / fingers look so wrinkly

Thatboymum · 07/08/2022 12:13

I do the claw and I am aware it looks not nice but it’s the only physically way to get all 5 nails in a pic without somebody else taking it 🤣

NiqueNique · 07/08/2022 12:54

Nothing wrong with only showing four nails! Much, much nicer.

I'm an old fart but I remember Michael Palin's 'Ripping Yarns' telly programme, Curse of The Claw <cue thunder and lightening sound effects>

Invisible willy not cucumber!

LibbyL92 · 07/08/2022 13:55

I’m more curious on what the pigeon toed pose is??

I've wondered this too - you can almost hear a witchy cackle

littleandlots · 07/08/2022 14:08

Most people can get nice nails - especially when you pay for them, but most people have ugly hands (compared to hand models) so they look rubbish in photos.
The 'claw' solves this because you can't see the whole hand

NiqueNique · 07/08/2022 14:14

It really doesn’t solve it, though - It looks horribly ugly and I’d much rather see a lovely, normal hand like most lovely, normal people have, model-like or not.

TitaniasAss · 07/08/2022 16:00

Oh I think The Claw is much worse than a normal hand, it's such an unnatural position for a hand to be in! 😆

OP posts:
Ontomatopea · 07/08/2022 16:01

So you can see the thumb?

hugoagogo · 07/08/2022 16:56

Well just looking at my hand out flat is pretty horrific, is there surgery one can have to correct it?

MacKenzieMcHale · 07/08/2022 16:57

What does it matter when the hand looks like if what you're selling is fake nails? I'd rather a normal hand than a claw.
