Going grey

I've been colouring my hair for a few years to cover the grey hairs, but I'm now wanting to just embrace the grey. How can I do this in a way that looks nice? My hair is quite long and naturally brown so waiting for it all to grow out will take a while and will leave me with a very clear line between coloured and not coloured hair. Any suggestions?

I’ve been thinking about going grey for a while and it’s now been sort of forced on me as I’ve developed a reaction to hair dye and can’t use any dyes that will touch my scalp. I’m going to have low lights (I think!) that will blend the tidemark between my natural colour and my dyed hair until it’s all grown out and then I will stop colouring it completely.

There are lots of tricks you could try and if you try looking up there various Going Grey Gracefully/Silver Sisters FB groups you’ll get lots of ideas.

I grew mine out from dark brown to grey over the last two years - just cold turkey. I didn’t find it too bad tbh. Don’t forget, your hair doesn’t just grow down from your parting, it grows underneath, at your temples, at the back of your neck… for me, it came out like silver highlights. People asked me if I’d had it dyed that way. It might not grow down with a stark demarcation line like you’re imagining.

I think you need to grow your grey out for a month and see what you’re dealing with!

The first few months are the worst - scarves, headbands, that L'Oréal spray all helped. Then it is much easier as the dyed ends fade and your silver come through from underneath etc.

Thanks all, @ChitChatChatter I think I'm getting more sensitive to the dye. I end up washing my hair several times after having it done because it itches really badly. I think I'll look at lowlights too.

I've joined those groups @PuppyMonkey thanks for suggesting them. I'm going to cancel my next hair appointment and let it grow like you suggest. Part of the reason I want to grow it out is because the roots grow so quickly that within a couple of weeks of
having it done you can see the grey again.

@ThePoetsWife I'll look into that spray. I can also wear my hair up which makes it less obvious.

Thanks all
