Brown dye over bleached hair?

Darkness22 · 02/08/2022 11:24

Mid 40s, very dark hair that is very grey on top. I have had it bleached blonde for 4 years now which has been a mission in itself. The colour is a nice cool blonde, but my hair is in tatters. It's awful. I've not had any bleach for 5 months now and will keep getting trims to cut it out.

I want to go dark again for a few years, until I'm properly white. I know my whites will shine through after a week, but I can colour them in. Any advice? Do I need to cut all the bleach out first? Can I dye on top of it?

Put red over the bleached bit, then brown over the lot. Wella do Perfecton which is designed to go under hair colour to replace pigment lost to lightening.

Following as want to do the same!

If you put brown box dye straight on bleached blonde it can go a greeny brown. You'd be better off going to the hairdresser and asking them.

Personally I don’t care if the blonde bits are lighter brown.

I dyed my bleached blonde darker. Did some research and advice seemed to be to do it in two stages to combat it going a strange shade - sorry can’t remember exactly but may have been to get a reddy tone first. Search some mussent threads and you should find the advice.

generally the advice was to go to a professional. I didn’t. Result was okish but faded quickly and I didn’t like being dark so went back blonde - personal choice not much wrong with the colour.

It's not that the blonde will be lighter brown. Colour designed for darker hair as most browns are assume the red undertone will be present in the hair. You need to either add the red tone to the colour or to the hair or the result will be a muddy khaki and not a glossy brown.

This is the stuff you need in /43 (red-gold) to replace the red-gold tones missing from the hair. There will be a slight difference in tone between the previous bleached bits and the natural bits even with pre-pigmenting the bleached ends. The only way to avoid this would be to use two different brown shades but you really need an experienced colorist to see the hair in RL and match the tones accordingly if you want to avoid that.

Let the hairdresser do it first. Ask which colour they are using so you can re-touch yourself when necessary, it will be cheaper. But definitely let the hairdresser do it first.

When I had a disaster over lockdown and the hairdresser dyed it bleach blonde, I got another hairdresser to put a bit different - sort of light/mid brown semi permanent dye over it.

toooldtocarewhoknows · 02/08/2022 17:00

I dyed my sons bleached white blond hair after 48 hours as he changed his mind!

It looks fab. We did a strand test to make sure it didn't go too dark. No problems at all.

toooldtocarewhoknows · 02/08/2022 17:01

We used a light brown with ash tones as he didn't want red in his hair at all.

Do you think I vould have a baylayage type do in the meantime- as the blonde grows out?

Not unless you put a different depth of brown/dark blonde on the lightened parts. The difference in depth after pre-filling with red and covering with a darker colour would be negliable and probably only noticeable in direct sunlight.

I've just gone from bleached blonde to darker, same reason, I love the blonde but the damage is so extreme now. I spoke to a hairdresser friend who said to put a copper colour in and then brown over that. As a teenager I tried to go from bleached blonde straight to chestnut brown and it went green, it was awful! So I wanted to avoid that this time and the copper in between worked really well

Do you have any greys on your parting? If so how are you dealing with them? Are they getting you down?

Just for Men beard dye! It comes in a tube with a brush so i just paint a tiny bit on my parting every other week- literally just a cm or so.

I’ve just done this! Growing blonde highlights out of naturally mid-dark brown hair. I used e salon and sent a photo of my highlighted hair and explained exactly what I was looking for. They sent me a kit which worked a treat…I went for semi-perm as opposed to permanent though. Went from scraggy blonde to rich brown….it faded of course but took about 2 months to get back to what it was and looked really natural as it faded plus condition wise it was gentle and I’m hoping with prolonged use and as my highlights grow out it will improve. I’ve got it coming every 6 weeks now. It’s pretty easy to apply. I’d specifically said I was worried about my hair turning orange or green. Am sticking with semi as I’m tempted to grow in the gray! I’m 45 and about 15% grey….I might bottle it though but hair colour maintenance is just so expensive and a total pain in the ass!

SergeiL · 03/08/2022 07:41

I did it. My hairdresser friend just said to make sure you use a chocolate brown as opposed to anything ashy. It looked fine, not green at all. I didn’t like it though, despite it being my natural colour. I then tried going grey which also didn’t work. I am back on the bleach! 😩
