20 years of rimmel liquid liner my eyelids are too wrinkly :( what now?

what do I do with my eyes now! I’ve worn my trusted rimmel liquid liner on my top lid since my early 20s…sometimes flicked out for special occasions but typically just a nice crisp finish along my top lid. Alas, I can never get a smooth line anymore thanks to wrinkly eyelids (and I’ve been using lid primer the last 4 years too). I just end up having to go a bit thicker to make it even and so the look ends up way too heavy (and even then i wouldn’t call it smooth 😞)

It’s time to admit defeat. But my face just looks totally naked without my beloved liner….I loved the simplicity. Im not one for dramatic eyeshadows but mascara alone is just not cutting it.

what do I do now? Kohl type liners are worse for me and I’ve tried every other gel and liquid liner going but I always went back to rimmel exaggerate .
any ideas?

Benefit roller liner is pretty good? I use the brown so it’s not as harsh, the squishy nib is nice on my wrinkled old lids😂

Cheap black kohl extremely sharpened and from the fridge

I use brown, in a pencil, and outline the outer 1/3 of my eye. Might need me to lift my eyelid up to do it. Smudging a bit with a bud gives me a softer look.

Liner tattoos—not kidding

For years now I've used a damp thin brush with a dark brown powder as an eyeliner. It still works for me. I don't think I've ever used a designated eyeliner. Like OP I would feel my eye make-up wasn't working without the extra step of a liner. As an aside, I've gone along with the rule that if you have blue eyes use brown colours as a contrast. Last week I used a damp brush on blue eyeshadow as a liner, on top of a brown shadow, and my eyes popped out at me! It was like, why didn't you try this before now 🤔?

I’ve been doing this recently and it’s great but doesn’t stick…by the time I get to the office it’s pretty much gone (and halfway down my face!). Do you have recommendations on shadow that sticks?

You need Kat Von Dee tattoo liner, it’s amazing but I think only comes in brown or black. It stays put all day and is very easy to apply.

One of those felt tip eyeliner pens . They're great on my own aged eyelids.

Aquamarine1029 · 30/07/2022 22:35

Switch to a brown/bronze liner. It's hard, but the fact is that what worked when you were younger just doesn't work anymore. As you age, softer is better, it's just a fact. Harsh black just accentuates lines and wrinkles.

Anyone any views on “tight lining”? I’ve been looking at online tutorials and have done it the last couple of days. I like the look and think it might be enough on its own for me…it definitely gives the definition I’m after with a bit of mascara. I’m wondering though if it makes eyes look smaller though and still need something above the lash line

I use Laura Mercier tight lining powder and brush. You wet the brush first, make a sort of paste in the shadow, then wiggle it into your lashes from the underside. It’s dead easy and doesn’t run. I’m in my fifties and also find my old style liner doesn’t work any more.

RuthBrenner · 01/08/2022 13:19

Maybelline colour tattoo works great applied with a thin brush as liner, it doesn't budge all day.

NorthernSoul55 · 01/08/2022 14:06

I was going to suggest tightlining but I see you've tried it. I use a waterproof eyeliner pen, just under the top lid.
