One layer/3D make up

I keep seeing this on Instagram and wondering if I should try it. It seems to be that instead of building up layers of make up like concealer/foundation/blusher/bronzer/contour/highlight/powder you instead dab different bits of Cream products all over your face and then join them together by blending with a brush/sponge......has anyone tried this? Can anyone recommend any products for this? It appears you need a sort of cream palate.

I like the idea but worried I would just look dirty and smudged

What's the benefit? I think the videos seem a bit gimmicky.

I tend to apply my makeup a bit like this anyway; I put my separate under eye product on, then foundation/BB cream and blend together. Then use a cream blush, sometimes a very subtle cream contour (sides of nose, following my cheekbone) and blend with the same beauty blender.

I can't see a benefit to making a point of doing it all at once and imagine you'd have to go back over things like blush where they'd blend away. I do think any cream products are fine though, just pick and choose what you like rather than be dictated to by a palette which might not have the right tones for your skin.
