Quick question about Vans sizing

About to buy DS some slip on chequerboard Vans but not sure if they typically come up big/small/true to size. Does anyone have any advice?

Bought ds Vans this week and they seem true to size, his usual size fits perfectly

True to size I've always found and have had the slip on ones a lot.

Not sure what men's would be like but I had to size up from a 4/37 to a 5/38 for lace-up Vans.

I find them ok once on but both me and the DC have high insteps (wellies were a nightmare) so getting the slip on ones on is hard
